What is the legal basis for claiming sovereignty all the way to 90 degrees north latitude (North Pole)? Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

bush_cheney2004 Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Might have to do with continental shelf. OK....seems to me that Alaska is also part of the continent last I checked. Does Canada's claim also extend to the center of the earth's molten core? Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Does Canada's claim also extend to the center of the earth's molten core? I saw a map somewhere that showed the proposed lines. I will have to look for it, but it showed Alaska with lines that reached to the pole as well as Denmark, Russia and everyone else. Quote

Well, I suspect that Canada is in for a big disappointment if relying on a very polite "sector" strategy to divy up the pie all the way to the Pole. Sovereignty is not virtual.....development and the ability to defend possession have counted most in the past. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Guest bootlegga Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Well, I think every country recognizes our claim to the land, it's the water and what's underneath it that we're arguing over. I would expect announcements in the coming time, but the confirmation of the new flagship for the coast guard and the deep water part is certainly something. It's still not enough. Harper should have kept his promise to build three heavy icebreakers. One simply isn't enough, and the 'Arctic patrol vessels' are still a dream. Even if they ever get built, they can only operate up there for a few months a year. Hardly the year round presence we need. Quote

Jerry J. Fortin Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 It is enough. Today I can see that with the new announcements. It isn't nearly enough. We don't even have sufficient political will let alone military capability. Quote
Army Guy Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 And while Canada is just getting it's act together in regards to our north, Russia is preparing to land a few para troopers at the North pole...Just to prove that it can be done....it would be nice to have a couple of CSOR rifle companys already there when they land to send a message back.... I don't know why we don't do that. We could do it just as easy as they could. As I said, most military strategists think that Russia is simply playing games. Quote
Machjo Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 God forbid all sides should agree to set borders too soon. That would end excuses for a massive military stimulous package. Quote With friends like Zionists, what Jew needs enemies? With friends like Islamists, what Muslim needs enemies?
Guest TheRepublicofCanada Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Heres an interesting art on our artic from a military veiw.military mag I read it and found this neat quote on page 20, "Trans-national crime affects Canada’s major ports, and the RCMP estimates that between 2.5 to four million people cross the border illegally every year." Shocking really. Quote
