"The Fraser Institute has released a survey showing that many petroleum industry executives see Manitoba as a better place to invest than Alberta."

Thanks NDP for helping to grow industry, and investment in the province.

Manitoba is ranked high because it has very little royalties.

Maybe the federal NDP will take note and look to lower corporate income taxes dramatically.

I'm not sure I'd trust the NDP to grow the oil industry. If it was up to them, they'd put oil and coal out of business.

Would Manitoba even exist without the $2billion per year in extra gravy they get from the feds?

I hope they get enough oil and gas revneue to answer that question.

You forget that number has dropped from 2000 when the NDP took power. Even the haters of Manitoba can't come up with a good reason why the NDP isn't good for the province.

I think it's quite fitting that the only success the NDP has in provincial politics, is in a province that receives federal welfare. I think it's quite appropriate.

When Alberta stops getting $4 billion a year from the Feds, I will take some of their more right wing citizens more seriously.

So do you want the NDP as the federal government too?I never paid too much attention to the NDP until they came to power in Ontario.I don't think there is a single person that lived through that era that would not admit that Bob Rae(now LIBERAL!) and his merry band of Socialists were a complete and utter disaster. They managed to piss off everyone, right to left,no easy task.NDP?Thank you but no.

2009-2010

Quebec and Manitoba will receive the most from equalization payments in the 2009-2010 year.[3]

In the 2009-2010 year, the following provinces will receive equalization payments: [4]

Quebec

Manitoba

New Brunswick

Nova Scotia

Ontario

Prince Edward Island

[edit] Equalization payments in Canada – 2007-08

($ millions)

NL PE NS NB QC MB SK BC Total

Equalization 477 294 1,465 1,477 7,160 1,826 226 - 12,925

Per capita $938 $2,118 $1,564 $1,968 $931 $1,543 $230 $0

It may be a little easier to balance the books for the have-not provinces.Gosh,do you see Manitoba in there?

We need to realise that a party is no more than a composite of its members. If the membership of the Manitoba NDP is more fiscally conservative than the federal Conservatives, while the membership of the federal NDP is loonie left, then that will naturally manifest itself in their policies. IN the end, that's why it's preferable to vote candidate rather than party. Last federal election, my local Green candidate was more economically conservative than the Conservative candidate!

I think things like this are commen, whereby in a particular riding, the local Dipper might be to the right of the local Liberal, or the local liberal to the right of the local Green, or the local Green to the right of the local Conservative. Or sometimes, one of them just has no clue about how he'll carry out his duties once elected. Or the local Conservative might be a very red tory, etc. That's why party affiliation means little in the grand scheme of things. Just to take an example, imagine if only the more left-leaning Dippers win seats in Parliament. Naturally the NDP in parliament at least will end up leaning quite left. Inversely, if most elected Dippers are centrist, then the NDP in Parliament will end up leaning to the centre. Same applies to any party, and that's why it makes no sence whatsoever to vote based on party affiliation.

Ummm, no, it isn't easier for a have not province to balance it's books. If a province isn't receiving equalization, it means that it's government's fiscal capacity is at or above the average meaning that there is no top up needed. Have not provinces are in the most difficult circumstances even with federal funds....and Manitoba gets 13% less of its budget from federal funding than before, so we're working on it.

Ignatieff says Manitoba is an economic role model for the rest of Canada.

Many regions of Canada could learn from Manitoba's economy when it comes to developing a strategy to battle recessionary forces, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said today in Winnipeg.

Ignatieff said Manitoba's highly diversified economy is a model for the rest of Canada. "It is only through diversification that Canada will shed its reliance on natural resources and build itself into an economic powerhouse that continues to grow even when other countries are in recession."

"We must diversify and we must diversify now,"

Does he say what he means, or does he mean what he says?

Since it has no deficit and continues to have economic growth, it does seem to be doing something differently.

Are you suggesting that resource wealth is the only way to measure a province's success?

Is it your contention that federal spending is responsible for the province not going into the depth's of recession like some provinces are?

Why does Alberta receive $4 billion in transfers from the federal government?

Are you talking equalization payments? Cause Alberta doesn't qualify for those. However, Manitoba does. I guess we know Manitoba's secret to balancing budgets in times of recession. Receiving billions of dollars from the federal government.
