His family was Conservative in Russia and is now Liberal in Canada! Something is wrong somewhere yes!

Conservatives in Russia were the aristocrats...they were destroyed when they were cut off from the money supply..Third generation deposed aristocrats that want to get back on top need power - and with that power will come money - what better party to belong to and use that liberals - they are henchmen for the conservatives - liberal social policy weaken the population and make them mindless and compliant - liberals are the dupes - don't you understand that - when a rich conservative sees liberals trashing and harrassing the nation - they smile - because the conservative masters know that liberals soften up the population making them easier to rule and manipulate - the average liberal in parliment is not even a ware of that - a few insiders are.

I was actually planning to support the Liberals in the upcoming election but with their support of c-15 they can forget about it. Instead I will be using all my free time during the election to remind people that BOTH the tories and the liberals support mandatory minimums for cannabis.

Vote Liberal? Nyet, Nyet, soviet

A bit like Staline, Ignatieff would not hesitate to put individuals in prison if it means that his Party appears popular in all regions of the country, including the most remote, conservative and oil-rich ones.

Ignatieff may have had a grand father that was a Troskyite - no one is quiet sure who is forefathers are or what they really did - he may just be following tradition - maybe it was his grand father who order mine to be shot for being an independent - and a man when questioned if he believed in God - by the soviets was shot in the head for saying yes...If ignatieff is a continuation of some soviet style ideas hidden under a Harvard education he had better not rear his ugly head - or he will be toss out on his ass - we don't need international communists who want to take over Canada so they can feel like kings - imposter kings at that - a good King loves people as they are..

If Zizek is right, to goal of Ignatieff, as a biopolician, is to put the population in some kind of big refugee camp to realize the End of Man and History. The goal of Staline was the entire opposite, to put the population in a labor camp to realize the End of the Prehistory of Man.

The Liberals didn't vote for C-15 because they support mandatory minima for cannabis. Here's why they supported it:

Legalize all drugs and the gangs have the rug pulled out from under them, in one fell swoop.

No violence, no guns, no jails required.

I repeat: legalization may mean gang-like taxation.

I see we have yet another new government authorized liquor outlet in the town I live in. Its even nearer to the school than the last one.

Its wierd.

Portugal has eliminated criminal penalties for possession of all drugs and it's been a success

Neither Harper nor Ignatieff have the balls to do this.

Portugal is offering therapies to those caught with drugs. Compare to Europe, America may still find these therapies too laughable.

Ah Hawh --- see I told you there is no left or right - Harper will instruct Ignatieff.....he will listen because he is not an insider and Harper is....You can not stay out of a nation for a prolonged time and expect to have built up contracts. Iggy - is a newbe, and new comers have to submit to the status quo untill they earn their stripes. Welcome to the newer and more genter and kinder type of facism ----It's about time - the adversarial parlimentary system works if you have a few tribes in contention - it's old fashioned and does not work - highly ineffecent.

What should Portugal offer?

What if people in Portugal don't want therapy, what does the state say if people simply ask to be left alone?

Then how will they get their drugs?

From some drug gang assuming they don't grow/produce their own.

Nothing. It's simply an offer from the government and there are no penalties if the offer is declined.

I suspect the offer of therapy was something that Portuguese proponents of drug legalization put into the legislation to placate the opponents.

It sure beats the irrational Harper approach to drugs which merely mimics the US approach.

But both are still illegal....so how will our heroes who "wish to be left alone" acquire their drugs for personal use legally?

Economics trumps Virtue.

I guess it safe to assume they don't get their drugs returned to them and most still have to resort to buying drugs from a gang. I guess if this is what passes for progress then so be it. Decriminalization seems like an even goofier policy really.

What does the US have to do with it? Canada banned cannabis before the USA.

As of 2008, one-quarter of all American inmates are in jail due to drug-related crimes, which are primarily non-violent. The U.S. imprisons a larger proportion of its adult population, for longer sentences of time, than any other country in the world; incarceration rates are racially disproportionate and have skyrocketed. The U.S. has less than five percent of the world’s population, but nearly a quarter of its prisoners.
