Oleg Bach Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 Sorry, I have sneaky experience to the contrary...involving under ice sonar and inertial navigation. Bush Cheney - to the contray....all of my life - over 50 years and since I sat in my grade four class - we looked at the map of the Arctic...and it was Canadian territory - THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN AND THAT IS THE WAY IT IS ===== It is ours! Sorry - maybe you can go to Persia or what ever they call the place now and snag that for the empire - apparently Iraq did not work out for you - nor will our northern lands ----You will have to go though us to get to it ---- and we say NO! Remember the radio adds out of the 50s ---"boost Buffalo it's good for" - as me and my Dad were driving to Philidelphia...we drove though Buffalo, as a 5 year old we sang...Boost Buffalo it stinks for you..the place was horrific...so my friend - is there hope...or is the place not worth saving?.....not just Buffalo ===== but the world in general? Argus Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 We do have ice breakers and we have a plan for a new, much larger CCG icebreaker. I think the light military icebreakers are still in the plans as well. Sure, I'd like more, but we have to be realistic. We do not have any such plans. We have politicians saying "Gee, I think we should have these" but no blueprints, no money alotted, no bidding, no one building anything, no idea when or if anyone will ever be building anything. Successive federal governments have wondered aloud about building icebreakers that could go north for decades, but none ever did anything because they felt there was more political mileage to be made spending money on Quebec or something. Argus Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 we cant back down. The US is deliberately trying to play down our claims and brush us aside. The thing to remember is its not personal, its politics; its all give and take. we cant back down on this, they're not going to invade us over it because we sell to them anyway. so let them know we wont get brushed aside and bargain for something we want, joint northern action, rights elsewhere, whatever we deem we need. As long as we don't have to pay for it, right? Moonbox Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 (edited) Talking about Canadian and American militaries competing for resources is idiotic to say the least. If we get oil reserves mapped and exploited the Americans won't touch them. It's a wash to the Americans if Canada manages to assert some of its claims to the Arctic. They already have cheap access to all of our country's resources. Can you imagine: "Oh NO Barack! Our longest standing ally and trade partner has started building oil rigs and fisheries in the Arctic! Now we're going to have to import these resources duty-free from Canadian companies that are already partially owned by our own corporations!" The Americans will make and exploit claims but but they are certainly not going to assert their will over us and deny claims we take advantage of. Our economies are far to intertwined already to bother. The last thing we are going to see are American destroyers shutting Canadian oil rigs down. eyeball Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 I'm more concerned about what happens to the environment in the arctic. Given that we're about 15 - 20 years behind the US and Europe on things like sewage disposal at sea our claim on environmental grounds is pretty lame. As for developing new fisheries, I think allowing DFO anywhere near the Arctic Ocean would be a crime against nature. Everything they've ever touched has turned to shit. I'm afraid my faith in the DND is only marginally better than DFO. Sending the Canadian Coast Guard would probably have been okay but since they got rolled into DFO, maybe not. I'd rather see a consortium of environmental NGO's given responsibility for the arctic but fat chance of that ever happening. Moonbox Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 I have no idea what DND or DFO are. I feel so stupid. Quote "A man is no more entitled to an opinion for which he cannot account than he is for a pint of beer for which he cannot pay" - Anonymous

krazy kanuck Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 And just in case the worst happens and the U. We are also busy training the Canada geese to attack your airplanes on takeoff. So ha. Quote Sick lungs don't show.
