The biggest winners in all of this are Duceppe and the Bloc party. Some has called it a deal with the Devil. I agree.

There is outrage that the Bloc will have power and influence for 18 months. But there isn't a light at the end of the tunnel. Duceppe will have gotten more for Quebec than any federalist MP could ever have dreamt. Support for the Bloc will remain strong.

Liberal Governments as we know them will be effectively finished as the Liberals have effectively killed their chances of getting a majority for many years by strengthening the Bloc and legitimizing the NDP.

To Duceppe, this scenario just might be more favourable than separation.

Ahhh....but...the devil is in the details.....

No doubt the 3 amigos will have fashioned an agreement designed to protect their public images. Right off of the bat, Duceppe made a public statement that he would not allow any members in his party to hold any ministerial duties (of course that would be a traitor to his cause). Although the formal agreement hasn't come out (and may not) I suspect that this coalition will be moderated and measured in its delivery. Each of them have something to prove besides proving that Harper is an egotistical bully.

Exactly. Supposedly the Bloc is going to give a carte blanche to a coalition of parties holding 114 seats in a 308 seat legislature for 18 months. In a pigs eye. What's it going to cost us?

Hey why did we not absorb Quebec when we had the chance? He who hesitates and is overly kind and politically selfish is lost - Now it may be, that we will be absorbed. Can't wait for the only French signs in Toronto. Seperatists are seperate..the day they made the declaration that they were a nation - that's when they lost all rights to participate in OUR parliment - how come the lazy creatures did not form their own parliment? They had lots of time---now the covetess bums want to steal ours?

Perhaps a continuation of Harper's policy of massive transfers of wealth into the province.

You ain't seen nothing yet. That was to buy votes, not a complete separatist party.

That's a policy that started decades ago. Trudeau championed that cause.

Since Quebec didn't sign the constitution, would they be considered guests in Canada?

Also, didn't they loose to the English back in the day and then permitted to stay?

My history is rusty.

Economic Left/Right: 3.25

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.26

I want to earn money and keep the majority of it.

Stephen Harper had the oppourtunity to absorb Quebec? Our pathological PM had the chance to bury a century and a half of painstakingly nurtured cultural duality and he blew it?

Good question, as they didn't sign the Constitution, why should they have the rights guaranteed by it?

The English needed them on their side to keep the Americans from taking over. The French new they would have no chance of keeping their remaining institutions under the US and so sided with the Brits. At least that's the way I understood it.

I think all of this is right on the mark. Dion and Layton have given Duceppe more than his supporters could have dreamed of.

If you're an candidate for any of the federalist parties in Quebec, how do you argue the case against the BQ after *this*?

CTV just reporting that the rumour is that Harper will offer Bloc MPs senate seats and massively increase the transfer payments to Quebec. Good to know that it is horrifying to have "Separatists" prop up a government but it's just fine to appoint them to permanent Senate seats.

I'm not sure how promising senate seats for a few BQ members will help Harper get out of this jam. Not unless they're crossing the aisle to get senate seats. Even then, he needs 10, yes? That's an awful lot of new senators.

A rumour you say but if true, it would just confirm that every one of them should be fired and we should go to an election.

We can now add bribery to Harper's legacy. Can crimes against the Canadian people be far behind?

Along with Dion and Layton. Birds of a feather it seems.

Funny, it didn't make their website. Since they're running advertising on how unethical it is to make a deal with the Bloc, it seems highly unlikely.

I don't think anyone here would say it's fine to appoint them to the Senate.

Canada will be finished as a country after this.........when leaders of a political party side with separatists Canada is truely finished, they would rather kiss friggin Quebec ass rather than keep the country together. It will be interesting to see what Alberta does!

What a disappointment and embarrassment. I just hope the rest of the world is not watching.

If they are watching, then they just found out like I have been saying for a long time that Canada is a banana republic.

Just think of all the Conservative, Liberal and NDP supporters now walking around in a daze, who never thought the day would come in such a sort time after voting the Conservatives into power that separatist could be controlling Canada's politics.

Canadians could take to the streets.

This is a horrible and potentially dangerous situation.

This group of rebels are not patriots but cut throat opportunists who are so self envolved that the nation could desolve and they would not even notice. Much like a fat glutton eating a bowl of melted cheese with a spoon while he uses a pile of starving children as a sofa. They are out of touch with civilization. Barbarians in suits who will side with a judge that rules kiddy porn is art - all the while lusting for little boys and in full political agreement. Shameless!

The problem is Layton is, as well, and Dion is an arrogant elitist who refuses to take advise or compromise, and Duceppe could well be working to an entirely different agenda and would not bother telling his "partners" if he was.

None of these men have ever been known for their spirit of cooperation or compromise. They are all ideologues, and they are all motivated by what's in it for them. And what's best for the NDP and the BQ is screwing the Liberals.

There have been a lot of rumours the last few days. If harper did that I'd vote against him myself.
