The Prairies were settled in large part by "minorities", that is people non-English speaking people. In the 1920s, when my grandmother was a girl, she told me there were Ukrainian and German communities in Manitoba where you couldn't hear a word of English. My own great-grandfather (her dad) was born in Canada but didn't learn how to speak English until he was in his teens.
