Liberal leader Stephane Dion on the weekend challenged the federal and Alberta governments over their records on climate change, insisting the province's reputation has been tarnished by the Tory governments' laggard environmental policies.

"It's very important for the world to know how much Albertans care about the environment, how much you are green and you want to do the right thing," Mr. Dion said to roars from the crowd. "I cannot accept that your reputation is damaged as it is now."

It is strange indeed that the Liberals are suddenly so concerned about the environment when the Quebec James Bay hydro electric project is considered ''the North American equivalent of the destruction of the tropical rain forest.''

This includes the production of the greenhouse gas methane from rotting vegetation, caused by all those thousands of flooded hectares of bush land from the creation James Bay hydro hydro electric generating facilities.

I did not or do not hear the Liberals howling in protest over the James Bay hydro electric project as an enviromental nightmare.

The scale of the project is so immense that Jan Beyea, National Audubon Society senior scientist, calls James Bay ''the North American equivalent of the destruction of the tropical rain forest.''

Easy to do when you know you are not going to win any seats in the province.

If the men do not die well it will be a black matter for the king that led them to it.

I'm impressed that Dion even went into Alberta, it kind of freaks me out when i drive through there, keep expecting to hear that banjo music from Deliverance. I just try to get through there as fast as possible

Scary - all those people with morals and all.

I'm sure he's not. Its just a rather feeble attempt to insult Alberta and Albertans.

Nothing scarier than a bunch of people who believe strongly in hard work and family values.

I noticed Dion , in his litany of criticism of Alberta and Harper, did not have the time to critique his own performance or that of his government. Just an oversight, I'm sure. he might have at least offered an apology to canadians along the lines of : "we did nothing for 13 years and I was personally useless as Environment Minister. I'll try to do better when I'm coronated, oops, elected next time".

In his silly shirt and hat, and rented boots, he looked utterly ridiculous in media promo.

His handlers forgot to dress him in a string tie with a carved bone toggle to complete the costume.

But.... they'll eat it up in Central Canada, which is the entire point of the Green Shift.

The government should do something.

LOL

That's too funny... couple of years ago we went on a holiday in cowboy country and were afraid to smoke a J just in case some idiot stick redneck smelled it and called the cops. We went back to BC ahead of schedule. Better safe than sorry IMO.

If your judgement of a healthy society hinges upon whether or not you're "afraid to smoke a J" because of "idiot rednecks" I would suggest that you

1. Reevaluate your priorities

and

2. Examine your stereotyping.

Isn't the whole idea of being a buttf*ck liberal that you're supposed to be "accepting" and "tolerant". Or is that only when referring to some brown dude who beats his wife because the koran says it's ok?

OooOO musta touched a nerve. LOL

My "priority" was on having a fun holiday... that included smoking a J in the hotel room. We put a towel under the door, just in case some do-gooder smelled it. Whether or not said "do-gooder" would've been a redneck or not is conjecture. LOL

Alberta is the most conservative province so my stereotyping is warranted. Just like out in the fringes of the Fraser Valley (where I do business) is very conservative and you bet I head back to mid valley before I smoke anything but a number 7. LOL

The problem isn't MY tolerance toward said redneck.... I would sit right there and smoke in front of him if I knew he wouldn't go all "do-gooder" and call the authorities.

I am not tolerant by the way... there are many things I have no use/tolerance for... you see, I am not a lefty -- just a regular, everyday, run-of-the-mill centrist. I distrust "extremes" of all kinds. lol

You drove all the way from Bountiful and turned around? Was your husband missing all of his other wives or just the 14-year-old ones?

Why the insult?

This has nothing to do with the topic.

If I hit a nerve with the redneck remark... refute it! Prove me wrong instead of tossing out insults.

And BC is full of granola eatin' tree huggin' hippy, communist freaks who worship David Suzuki and drive hybrids (oh and they have cats and small dogs).... soooooo. And Newfoundland is full of gramma's with cute accents. And Ontario is full of whiners.

... and your point is?

Is it still legal to smoke anything in a BC hotel anymore?

There are still a few with smoking rooms. Went to the Okanagan couple of weeks ago and got a smoking room. So I guess they haven't all converted over yet.

In Banff, we did have a smoking room (I couldn't believe we could still smoke in restaurants there!). We were concerned about someone walking by and smelling it (rarely crosses our minds in BC as it is so common) and making a fuss. In BC nobody makes a fuss about a measley J these days.

Good old rednecks must be doing something right, cowboy country is the richest place in Canada. It must be all of that clean, non pot filled air.

I like cowboy country, it must be nice to live in a place where they don't punish you for succeeding, too bad Manitoba doesn't do that.

We might be idiot stick rednecks, but we know how to make a buck. Not being potheads sure helps out with that. Don't like how cowboy country operates, leave, everybody's better off. We might be tight ass so-cons, but the tree huggers still want to come and piss on our parade.

What a fool Dion is, going to the most fiscal conservative area of Canada and trying to convince Albertans that he knows how to spend their money better than they do, and saying that getting ahead as a province is a bad thing. Apparently according to him, rednecks are suppossed to be poor white trash.

I havent seen anyone make a fuss about it here in Southern Alberta either. People smoke in their back yards, walking down alleys, even walking down the sidewalk upon occasion, no one runs screaming to the cops.

A lot of simplistic stereotypes being bandied around in this thread, its actually funny when one considers the obvious lack of knowledge being displayed by those making such claims and promoting such stereotypes.

So you guys in Alberta are pot smokers now? I was there back in the summer of 05 so things could have changed in three years.

Wow. I. Am. Impressed!

That's great news! Nice to see that you are getting a good dose of introspection.

Have you thrown out that symbol of idiocy yet... the cowboy hat? Won't be long... you're swelled heads will go back to normal once you've smoked a couple of ounces and you'll no longer fit the "symbol" of conservatism.

*I'll send you some tinfoil so that you can still fit your hat and so more lefty thoughts don't enter your brain.

... I am now in the game! Let's have an insult party and see how far we can push it before Greg or Charles finds out! Sound like fun! Yippeeee, giddalong li'l cowboys! LOL

Seriously, when I want a real conversation... I go to Democratic Underground. There are far too many rightwingers here that are unable to debate -- the only language they understand is simple, one-line insults.

Esss... Eyeeee... emmmm....emmmm...peeee..... ellll.......eeee.

You ok? Did your brain fall out trying to figure out the word... told you -- put on that tinfoil I sent... Oh, what? You need duct tape too? Forgot. Will send some through... hold on.

It's not saying too much if one liners are doing the job.

That cowboy hat is also the symbol of the richest place of the world. Those damn rednecks and their high standard of living. A benefit of being pot free. Don't like how we rednecks run things, we're not forcing you to stay. Call it the freedom of mobility, I believe it's in the charter.

The debate on here is actually pretty good. What's the idea of a good debate, 8 leftists agreeing with each other? I'll even go as far as to say that this site is a fair representation of the voting demographics of Canada.

Wow Drea! That was quite the tirade.

I can guarantee they were smoking weed in Alberta back in 05. Albertans for the most part are no different than any other Canadian in any other Province. Why the attempt to denigrate and demonize Albertans?

As I've mentioned before they are for the most part hard working people who hold strong family values, even most of the ones who smoke weed.

Do you honestly believe that there is any such thing as a weed free Province in Canada? Or is it just that people in BC can not conceive of any one any where else smoking weed?

The little pale French guy that has the very very mild non-discript personality and character is a liberal socialist and for him to say Alberta's rep is tarnished is really plain self endulgent envy - He simply hates independent families and persons and provinces...He wants everyone to join his robotic Trotskyite collective..to hell with the little guy - let him attempt to operate with out his ant like collective - he fails utterly as a rugged individual.

Kinda crabby today... PMS. Hate it when that happens

Why denigrate Albertans? For the same reason I denigrate those who live out in the upper Fraser Valley -- they think they are the only people on the planet with "family values" and "morals"... everyone else is an immoral heathen.

I don't think Albertans are any different from the rest of the world...

but my stepfather was a real cowboy and he wore runners and a baseball cap... only drugstore cowboys wear the "hat" and "swagger"... and Alta is full of transplanted drugstore cowboys that think it's their place to tell everyone what to do simply because Alta is on an extended upswing.

This too will end and people will migrate to other provinces and adopt that way of life...

Everywhere has hard working people that hold strong family values. Alberta has not corned the market on morals. "we have money!" "we made money on our own!" as if money is the only measure of success... it isn't. A happy, joy-filled life is success IMO.

And yes, Alta is the most conservative province. Most Albertans are proud of this fact.

I would say that BC'ers have more in common with Californians than say, Ontarians or Albertans.

The pale frenchman (thanks Oleg!) hasn't got a hope in hell of ever running this country IMO. If the liberals ever expect to win another election they need to drop the whiner. My next vote goes to Jack Layton... just so the Cons don't ever see a majority. I'd rather have a minority gov't anyway. I think that it's best for our extremely diverse country. We will never agree on all things as we are all so very different from one another.
