Hegemon. Ha-ha. Hoisted with your own petard... Too good to be true. I've only been here a day and already I have a bishop in my sack.

What you have in your sack is irrelevant. Do you really expect the United States to substantially alter domestic and foreign policy to the point of abdicating the hegemon role because of a single federal election? Do you have a firm grasp of American policies before 2001?

....What the USA needs to do is break out the Iraq constitution and have them vote for it in a door to door process where the people are protected. This will take a great deal of time, but in the end they will be able to say that the people were supporting the constitution. The next step is to fully support Iraq through rebuilding its ruined infrastructure. While they are doing this they must setup hundreds of small business efforts by Iraq citizens. Their way out is to raise the standard of living of the Iraq people. The Americans know this, and they know the price of doing this is very high, but they must do it to retain their superpower status. The effort to do this can only be seen as one of benevolence. That is the key to retaining the American empire, if they fail to do this they will lose their empire.

OK by me for the most part...the US has experience in such things going back to WW2. The losers end up being winners.

The US has lost the Middle East, and the Republican Party did it, big time. A foreign policy disaster on the same scale as "Peace In Our Time". The difference is that the war is over and the US has lost. They will finally have to surrender the Middle East to the people who live there.

And what really kills me, personally you understand, is that after decades of ignoring Africa, the US now wants to take on China there.

Go home George. Go Hunting with Dick. Buy your oil and metal from us. Don't ask for water.

I'm sure Obama's campaign is going to really take-off when American voters realize that anti-American foreigners around the world favour an Obama victory.

I think Americans are smart enough to make decisions based wholly on their own self-interest, and not on what someone thinks their enemies don't want. I think terrorists will consider the U.S. to be the great satan no matter what anyway.

This is true...they are also smart enough to ignore what their "neighbors" want too, when it conflicts with self interest.

Hillary would be easier for McCain to beat. She would galvanize the Republican base in a way that McCain probably can't do on his own. Obama would pose a tougher challenge, and definitely could win the general election.

However, he has failed to define himself during the primary contest, other then supporting "change". He has left himself open to be defined by the Republicans in the general election, and they will definitely oblige.

Also, in a recent event, McCain has called Obama on his possible bluff about promising to run in the general election with publicly financed campaigns instead of the normal forms or raising money. Either Obama goes along with this and forgoes his excellent fund-raising apparatus, or he risks looking like an enormous hypocrite/liar about wanting to "change the system" from the status quo. It's quite a brilliant move on McCain's part. I'm kind of hoping Obama refuses. The campaign commericals would be outstanding. :)

Anways, that just my opinion.

this is what makes me angry at the neo-conservatives. Especially the Bush crowd. McCain is NOT a conservative. Is that so hard to understand? He has repeatedly backstabbed Bush and conservative ideologies.

Yet, now the neocons come up with "Anyone but Hilary and Obama" but when liberals voted for Bill Clinton based on his experience and when he decimated Dole, conservatives went on to say "Liberals will vote for anyone, their candidates suck blah blah, Bill cheated on his wife blah blah" but the man left with a surplus in the economy EVEN when there was a recession after the dotcom bust.

McCain-Feingold, Amnesty Bill, 100 Year War in Iraq ring a bell? Bush has not done a single thing on Amnesty and building up solid defense yet spends money out of thin air AND reduces taxes. This is what pisses of the moderates and independents like myself so much. Conservatives including Reagan come in, spend money on military conquests as if there is no tomorrow and reduce taxes as if they are doing the public a favour and what happens? The budget is not balanced forcing the one who comes in next to increase taxes back again.

Same with Harper, reduces the GST, but taxes on income trusts. So we are to assume it somehow helps Canadians? I think not. No one is a true conservative these days and the conservative base knows it.

The Republican base is left with social conservatives like evangelical Christians who are destroying the voting process by voting for ultra-liberals and corrupt politicians like Huckabee.

I think McCain will be the candidate for the Rep. Bush sr. is backing him and Jeb and GW is backing the Huckabee, I feel sorry for Huckbee! Between Hilary and Obama, Hilary has too many skeletons in the closet, especially being married to Bill. I heard Bill say in an interview that if Hilary was president and if he didn't think she made the right decision he would try to change her mind. If only Hilary's last name wasn't Clinton and had never been to the White House before, then she would have a bettter chance BUT she still has all the senators and congressmen and women who haven't voted. I believe more people want the Bush-Clinton era to just go away and do want either McCain or Obama.

Nope....Clinton left in January 2001...technically the recession was from March - November 2001.

Balanced budgets are not the main priority. Debt ceilings were raised for Clinton too. JFK was famous for tax cuts as well. Moderates and independents are engaging in wishful thinking if not outright revisionist history.

Conservative does not equal Republican. True conservatives wouldn't even want to be POTUS.

Conservative does not equal Republican? There... You answered the question of why people like McCain wins the nomination and RINO's like Romney, Huckabee, Fred Thompson have to back him. Was it so hard for Romney to just stay quiet and not endorse anyone after all the attack ads on McCain?

Nothing will save the Republicans now until Stewart or Bobby Jindal takes over and revive the Old Right of strict paleoconservatism rather than neocons and social cons who are destroying the party.

The Republicans do not need saving....having enjoyed great success over the past 25 years (red states). Hell, the party was founded on significant "social change" (abolition of slavery). Supply side economics with budget deficits, Contract with America, belligerent foreign policy...all quite acceptable.

I suspect hard core conservatives would even find fault with William F. Buckley. Let them mutter to themselves while political processes pass them by, just like it does the radical left.

McCain would have been okay eight years ago, but the guy's too old and I think he has some health issues as well.

Why is he too old now? FDR was an ailing paraplegic for krissakes!

Yeah, and died while in office leaving Truman to screw things up.

Nonsensical...so it was better to have an ailing FDR remain in office? So what's the problem with McCain, even if he has medical issues ?

His wife might steal his medication, like she did from those charities.

Maybe...it was comforting to know that Canadians paid for Margaret Trudeau's drugs in full.

Yep, let's turn it on Canada yet again. Boring!

I do believe you are a few years late there BC-04...

Funny how the right has a hard time thinking in terms of "current, present day events". LOL

Margaret was and still is a basket case. She had no brains when PET married her and she has no brains now. Why he married her (so eligible he was back then -- he coulda done better, imo) I don't know, perhaps she gave good hea... or something.

BC -- McCain, a current events topic

-- PET, not a current events topic.

...jealous much?

Yes..she is a "basket case" past and present, suffering from bipolar disorder. If another poster decides to go there, I shall respond in spades.

All is fair.....hiding behind the "current topic" won't work at this game.

McCain has zero chance against Obama and is a 'possible' but unlikely winner against Hillary.

The vote will something like 57 to 43 Demo if Obama vs McCain 53 to 47 for Hillary vs McCain.

The polls are a bit closer but they don't reflect motivation.

By this time next year there will be the beginning of the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and the resotration of sanity in US foreign policy.

Don't bet on it.....the USA has been in Korea, Germany, and Japan for over 50 years. Iraq is just another Yankee franchise for America's interests.

Obama supporters will have to kill all the OLD PEOPLE (who actually vote).

There's a whole lot of wishful thinking underneath Obama's campaign and support - and very little hard-nosed thinking.

Take a look at a map of Electoral College votes in the US, think of how left Obama's "programme" is and then you'll realize that he has little to no chance of defeating McCain.

With McCain, people know what to expect and what kind of president he'll be. One remaining question is who the VP will be.
