August1991 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Hasbro, the company that now has the copyright to make the board game Monopoly, is offering a world version of the game. To choose which cities will appear in which places, it has a web site where people can vote for their favourite cities - to replace the streets of Atlantic City of the original Monopoly game. (I always liked the greens - Pennsylvania Avenue and North Carolina. Filled with hotels, you could make a whack of money if someone landed on one of those squares.) So, what world city is Boardwalk? Paris of course. What Canadian cities make it on the board? Montreal is in the reds (Illinois, Kentucky.) Vancouver is in the light blues. (Those cheap, crappy, irritating places like Oriental Avenue. Incidentally, boards are different around the world and in Canada, we got the American board. I once gave my nephew the Arabic board as a joke gift.) If you want to vote on cities for the World Monopoly board, here's the link: http://www.monopolyworldvote.com/ The site also shows current standings. Sometimes, one has to admire smart marketing. BC_chick Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Montreal is more internationally renowned so I'm not surprised it got more votes. And of course, IMO Montreal beats Vancouver hands down on many many aspects. However, our winters alone outweigh any of those other benefits Montreal has to offer. gc1765 Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 My take on Vancouver winters is exactly the opposite.Ugly grey skies pouring down misery for weeks on end. No thanks. I agree. I think I'd rather have snow than constant rain (rained every day except one last January, if I remember correctly). Then again, the grass is always greener on the other side. I think with global warming, Vancouver might start to lose some of its appeal. Quote Almost three thousand people died needlessly and tragically at the World Trade Center on September 11; ten thousand Africans die needlessly and tragically every single day-and have died every single day since September 11-of AIDS, TB, and malaria. We need to keep September 11 in perspective, especially because the ten thousand daily deaths are preventable. - Jeffrey Sachs (from his book "The End of Poverty")
BC_chick Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 I'll take grey skies, even with the weird GW weather we seem to be having lately, than -20 - or deep freeze -40. I lived in Montreal for a few years... even fully bundled up it's not comfortable to be outside more than 5 or 10 minutes. Not to mention going anywhere, shopping or out for dinner, and carrying all that extra luggage. I'm not saying I like the rain, I understand how depressing it is. But having lived out east, I don't take it for granted at least a few times a week how nice it is to be able to go out with the jacket unzipped, a thin sweater.... and an umbrella. M.Dancer Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Montreal is more internationally renowned so I'm not surprised it got more votes. When I was travelling in Europe in the 70s just after the olympics, someone would ask where I was from and I would tell them Montreal, 9 times out of 10 they would say where is that.... ...So I figyred they wanted someothing that really sounded Canadian..so I would say Sioux Look-out (great in Germany) or Great Bear Lake, Goose Village, Hochelaga or Shawinigan..... August1991 Posted August 20, 2008 Author Report Posted August 20, 2008 Three Canadian cities will be featured in the Monopoly board game after five million fans cast votes for their favourite cities to be included in the first-ever international edition. CBCI frankly think this has more to do with the voting procedure than anything else. I mean Riga's a nice city but it hardly merits second place. I suppose some Latvian radio station got people to keep voting every day. If you care, here's the line-up. Where the hell is Gdynia? Quote
Wilber Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I don't really like any of them because they are cities but I don't remember ever being colder than one winter night standing under the belly of an aircraft in a howling wind on the ramp at Mirabel.
