100,000 including Fonda and Sarandon protest
newbie replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I'm not going to apologize for Jane Fonda, but it seems her visits there were to promote ending the war, not providing support to the N. Vietnamese army. I don't see that as taking sides. If you recall a huge majority of the U.S. population were against that war and rightly so. Again, Fonda did some stupid things to which she has apologized many times for. Holding a grudge against someone for an extended period of time can be dangerous to your mental health. -

I said that sincerely. I have a mental health background and know that any trauma, or hostility caused by such, can require counselling to move a person on. If vets don't talk about their past experiences or hatred it can overcome them. I was simply offering advice. Jane Fonda wasn't the enemy. They can't blame her for their injuries or for anything else. She did a stupid thing and apologized for it a number of times. If they still feel animosity towards her, it is their problem, but help is available. -
Tories to Run Negative TV Ad Campaign

Tit for tat: I like the CPC idea of elected Senate, and the fixed time for elections. I'm glad we're following our commitment to NATO re Afghanistan. I hope Harper follows through on any immediate plan he has to help our environment. GST cut was a nice gesture, but it was probably a political move rather than a genuine one to help Canadians. -
People who believe in conspiracy theories generally evince stupidity. Well if the gov't would level with its citizens, there wouldn't necessarily be conspiracies. The whole thing re the Pentagon would be solved for me if the Pentagon/Gov't would release the other camera views of the crash. Seems simple to me.

Plus I remember when Emerson crossed, a lot on the right said that you only vote for the man anyway. -

I think it's time to move on. Fonda is ancient history. If the vets can't let go of that, I encourage them to seek counselling. -

I guess I'm an eternal optimist then. One thing I would like to see is a financial cap on campaign advertising and no lobbying. You would think maybe that Harper might take J.C.'s example and turn the other cheek. -

Ricki, I wasn't just railing on Harper. But I chose him due to his big pre-election rant on cleaning up Gov't. I feel his negative ads qualify as indecent just as much as the Lib's soldiers one. He has no credibility with me, not only because of the ad but due to his unethical behaviour (Emerson and Fortier). If that's politics, then I feel we need a huge change. -

This would be the line the Liberals stepped over repeatedly to stay in power for 13 years? Canadian and US politics is filled with failures who tried to take the political high ground. George McGovern, Michael Dukakis, John Kerry, Robert Stanfield, Preston Manning etc, etc, etc... We will *always be mired in this crap* because it would take everybody taking the high ground at once. Why don't we do this? Have the Liberals take the high ground in the next election and see how successful it is for them? Moral victories are for chumps! This isn't about us versus them, Liberals vs. Conservative, etc. This is about taking a stand not to conduct negative campaigning and conduct. And I feel sorry for you if you feel moral victories are for chumps. You would fit right into the current level of politics offered in this and previous administrations. -

Care to list some of them "new" ideas? Most of my friends on the right don't want change or any other viewpoint presented but their own. They are the ones to me that seem intolerant and narrow-minded when it comes to issues that impact today's society (gay rights/marriage, immigration, religion, etc.). -

Are you calling the ads indecent and immoral? A little bit of histrionics me thinks... I am indeed calling the ads indecent and immoral. One dictionary definition for immoral is: violating moral principles; not conforming to the patterns of conduct usually accepted or established as consistent with principles of personal and social ethics. I believe Harper stepped over the line. Someone on this forum suggested that politics is all about mud throwing. I disagree. Until someone takes the high ground we'll always be mired in this crap. -

Maybe, but why waste time on this to begin with? Has an election been called that I'm not aware of? -

I'm quite disappointed in Harper. Where is the return to decent, moral government? It just proves he has lowered himself to the type of gutter politics that I thought he vowed to clean up. I don't let the Libs off the hook either. That "soldier" thing was terrible. Ah well, politics as usual I guess. -

That's what they said about Nixon for 1968. Come to think of it, even he wasn't impeached. He would have been. He lost the confidence of both houses. Why do you think he resigned then?

Canada still mum on the Saddam execution
newbie replied to BC_chick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The only people that care are people who are so filled with hate, bigotry and venom towards Harper and conservatives in general that nothing would ever induce them to vote for them anyway. So your wishes are completely unimportant. And Argus lies yet once again. I care and I certainly don't hate conservatives or Harper. Yes, of course. You're always saying such nice things about them, too. When they do nice things they'll get nice comments. I'm still waiting. -

The cons seem to think though that ANY criticism of this government is to be viewed as hateful and bigoted, and to some unpatriotic. Poppycock! Harper missed the opportunity to make a statement. And that shows his true colours as a leader.
