Thanks for that. Did you know that in low rise buildings, those with unprotected steel beam structures are much more likely to quickly collapse than the same structure with unprotected wood beams? The reason is that the heat causes steel to quickly deform and sag. The fire chars the heavy wood beams, but does not burn them through enough to collapse. This is seen in forest fires, where the fire scorches the bark and wood surface , and kills the tree, but leaves it standing for many years.

One of the NDP women MPs reported it directly to Trudeau. That's what got the whole dirtball rolling. It makes me wonder, as noted by somebody above, if this is based in a NDP stunt.

It was pretty creepy that Vince Carters mother travels with the team.

That is very funny. If only it were true. -
I don't care what Catholics believe. I am commenting on the actual role of the Papacy.

Obviously there is a process in place, and Trudeau exercised it by suspending two members of his caucus. Apparently there was no due process involved for the two men, but that is an issue for the Liberal Party, not Parliament. These two men have access to the courts if they think that the LPC acted unfairly. If Trudeau feels there is criminal action involved, he'd have to turn it over to the police. His call. His responsibility.

Tories to increase immigration levels for election year
overthere replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Really? Then those poor Quebecois must either have taken the wrong exit off the 401 and be totally lost, or they are now enjoying the fine benefits of the social welfare system in Ontario. Note: they are not enjoying the less fine social welfare system in Alberta. If you are single, have no dependents and employable you cannot get welfare in AB. Sorry to disappoint. -
No, teachers have jobs that are well paid for the hours and working conditions. The workplace is warm, dry , clean and safe. The benefits are excellent, with plenty of time off. There is stress, but few jobs in those salary brackets do not have stress, it comes with the income levels everywhere. They should be paid in accordance with market conditions, supply and demand, like most other careers. In Alberta there are no teachers colleges, all teachers must now have a minimum 4 year Bachelor of Education university degree. You can get an afterdegree 2 year BEd, but it is very hard to get into that program, and you'll take 6 years overall for a second undergraduate degree. In the 90s, there were many graduates with BEd degrees and few retirees, hence very few new jobs. Within a year or two, applications from high school students to enter the BEd degree program started to shrink as kids recognized job prospects as teachers were limited, because of the backlog of unemployed graduates. The Faculty response was amazing. Instead of cutting back in recognition of the situation in the real world they.... reduced the entry requirements to the Faculty for high school grads. IIRC, their standard requirement of 70% average was dropped to 65%. Other faculties maintained their 70% requirement. Of course, that meant that high school grads with weak averages that could not get into any other Faculty could now get into Education. It kept enrollment up in the Faculty, which meant admin and professors and support people kept pumping out grads that would not get jobs. It was a near complete disconnect from the community they supposedly serve.

Federal and provincial governments don't have auto insurance, they self- insure. Read the story. The pre existing condition is a spurious and ridiculous premise. Its a huge bill, and the insurer is doing exactly what insurers do: everything possible to weasel out of their liability. The couple did in fact do their due diligence, got clearance from a physician to travel and could have no prior indication that they would need medical intervention. Why are you an apologist for injustice? They did nothing wrong. The only reasons Blue Cross will do anything at all is a) to avoid more adverse publicity which will result in more publicity or b ) pay the hospital to avoid having their customers being rejected at US medical facilities, which means a loss of business. The horrible publicity is earned and justified, and I won't be insuring with them again. Uber is a taxi service, a public carrier. I have no objection to them introducing competition to the stupid system in place now. They don't need medallions, which are a control mechanism that serves only medallion holders. But... they must be properly insured and the drivers must be licensed/vetted by somebody other than Uber.

An individual going to jail for a crime vs nobody from the entire Liberal apparatus being charged after stealing $200 million of taxpayers money = 'the same thing'. Yeah sure. -
This gets tiresome. Harper versions 1995 or 2004 is not running against Trudeau 2015. Its going to be Trudeau 2015 vs Harper 2015. They are both seeking to be PM. Which has the better background or most experience in 2015, which is when it matters? Trudeau 2015 will have been an MP for 7 years and party leader for 3 of that. Prior to becoming an MP, he was a teacher for a few years. Harper 2015 will have been an MP for a total of 16 years, Leader of the Opposition for 4 years, 11 years as Con leader, and 9 years as Prime Minister. Before and after being an MP he worked at political and advocacy jobs. I am not saying that experience alone is the sole metric. But Trudeaus handlers now it matters, and that they cannot go head to head on this issue, because Harper has vastly more experience in running the country. That matters to some people, people that vote. And that is why they are hyping two talking points: that Harpers stewardship has been inadequate and is not an advantage , and that Trudeau is a heavyweight. It is why they published Common Ground now. Statesmen publish memoirs and sober collections of their thoughts. You don't have to actually have done much or have done anything, Obama is an example of this game. It might work, image is a heavy influence and often triumphs over substance.

On the other hand, Nashville is a changed team. They have a new coach and a few guys that can score, for the first time in many years. Their defencemen are really good, led by Shea Weber. They have a world class goalie in Rinne, finally healthy. They play a high speed hard checking style. They will do well I think.

Those are not -for-profit to begin with , and that is also a clause in my standard auto policy, as follows: " Is the vehicle used for car pools or other share-the-ride arrangements" It's right above the previous one I cited. The use of shared pool cars is likely to be less frequent than a normal auto because you are taking a turn and a fraction of the use of a taxi. You're welcome to believe that, but I won't. It says right in black and white next to the limitations on my policy what can happen, and does happen. I saw a story about something similar just this morning, a denial of claim for spurious reasons. http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/saskatchewan-couple-considering-bankruptcy-after-1m-medical-bill-1.2108911 Auto insurance is no different. I would not get in a public carrier like Uber unless I knew there was a requirement for every taxi to be insured and licensed.

Surprise! Israel refuses cooperation with UN Gaza war probe
overthere replied to marcus's topic in The Rest of the World
And how would you describe those who adamantly refuse to note the hypocrisy of refusing to equally condemn those countries and well funded organizations that are determined to exterminate Israel and every Jew? Is there a substantive difference between Nazi Germany and Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran/Syria etc etc?- 293 replies

I just checked my non taxi auto insurance policy. One of the specific provisions is an answer of "No" to the following: "Will the automobile be rented or leased or used for carrying passengers for hire or for carrying explosives or radioactive material?" "If this information is inaccurate, please advise us immediately as insurance coverage could be void" Translation: if you don't tell us you are running as an Uber and tell us and pay the money in advance, we won't cover you. Be warned.

All the current NDP seats plus all the current Liberal seats add up to another Harper majority.

Ummm no. Taxis very often run long hours with multiple drivers. The car is insured for multiple drivers, and their individual risk is not insured. That is another reason, along with the far higher kms driven and the consequent far higher risk of an accident- that means every car insured pays a fat premium. The whole industry sucks at hitting things mostly because they drive so much. I have no quibble because the premiums are higher for taxis, what I want is for Uber to have the same playing field as taxis, because they are taxis. Regarding medical exams, these are the provincial requirements for a Class 4 license required of taxi operators, and what every Uber driver should have: It is too hard to cut and paste, but drivers in Edmonton also require this in addition to get a municipal photo ID and license: driving abstract police security clearance driver training program defensive driving program English language competency screening And every driver in Uber should also meet those minimum requirements, since the work is exactly the same as a taxi driver. No, driving without insurance does not occur with any frequency at all for taxis. First of all, the first offence fine here starts around $3000. Second, a taxi operator risks medallion suspension or termination, which is a catastrophic loss.

Vancouver School Board Rejects Corporate Funding

No, not necessarily. I was simply pointing out the principal purpose of breeding animals: to eat them. If it were profitable to breed dolphins/whales, you can be certain you'd see both on supermarket shelves. Aquaculture is a relatively recent and difficult human endeavour. -
Tories to increase immigration levels for election year
overthere replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Um yeah, you did specifically mention corruption. People are leaving Quebec, specifically for jobs in West, because there aren't many jobs. It's a sweet deal to have other provinces pay for social programs that allow both parents to work and have affordable daycare. But there is a catch- you both need jobs to make it work. The social experiment in Quebec day care has been running for a long time now. I don't see why you cannot use that experience to examine if the program is effective, achieves clear goals and is cost effective both on the micro and macro scales. -
Yes, I get all that but what is the answer- the scientific answer- to my question? I'll rephrase. We agree that the next Ice Age will come at some point in the future. If we do absolutely nothing, how will affect the arrival date of that catastrophic event? If we completely stop adding CO to our atmosphere right now or in the near future, how will that effect the arrival date of an Ice Age?

Stephen Harper taking away door to door postal service
overthere replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Purolator does not share their business, facilities or money with Canada Post. They compete with CP parcel delivery. Daily mail delivery in the form of first class mail is profitable, but the volumes are in a downward death spiral for reasons noted above. It is obvious to CP that one of their major costs in a declining business is door-to-door delivery, so they are eliminating much of that cost. They have aready reduced sortation costs greatly, much of it is automated at large postal facilities. Onlne shopping means increased parcel traffic, and Canada Post is in pretty good shape for dealing with that business line. They have two carriers(internal and Purolator), and modern handling facilities across the country. -
Trudeau should re-introduce punitive tariffs that force all Canadians to buy expensive made-in-Ontario goods, like the good old days. Lets get those jobs back from China and Mexico and get Ontario factory workers back to work!

Appreciate it? Appreciate what exactly? I can appreciate that change is done to keep the faithful, faithful. A business decision, no more or less. It is only admirable if you admire the institution. I understand the human need for tribalism, fellowship, and the use of ritual in assuaging pain and grief. It's the approach to it that offends, and the smug retreat to an act of faith when challenged.
