Olympic ceremonies lack French
fellowtraveller replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You're both wrong, 99.99% of the worlds popualtion know nothing of Canada and have no desire to know more. Our little disagreements about language and culture have lost resonance here and never had any anywhere else. -

The Quebec and federal politicians that are continually yapping about the horrors of insufficent French would disagree. -
The Enigma of Quebec City
fellowtraveller replied to August1991's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
There is no more: the golden ring of controlling the country as a separatist via the coalition was snatched away and won't be back anytime soon. He was drained and done before that yet still he hangs on. The Bloc will not gain seats in Quebec anytime soon either and the opposite is very likely. What is it that keeps him in his position now? Not that he has an extensive list of accomplishment, but what does he hope to do now? I also don';t think his backing away had much to do with Marois, rather it was realization that leading the PQ was a mugs game just now, Quebecois are not in a separating mood at the moment and he has spent a long time already in Opposition. -
Don't do it, he was really counting on your vote. No problem with trimming the public service, it has been growing rapidly for no particular reason. Time for a purge.

The Enigma of Quebec City

I'm surprised Duceppe has not quit yet. He was rumoured to be gone right after the election in 2008. The invitation to hold the balance of power persuaded him to stay on, but that was a long time ago. -

Vancouver 2010 with the five rings are the only signs I see. The Games were not awarded to Canada or BC. -

French Voyageurs didn't populate my country, the one I live in. Brits, Ukranians, Germans, Metis from Red River, a score of others, but not voyageurs. They were travellers, not farmers. I found the inclusion of First Nations influences in the opening ceremonies to be appropriate and relevant in the context. Much more relevant than pretending that French culture, French language or Quebec are relevant except for a few statutory bilingual civil servants in Vancouver filling hiring quotas. These are not Canadas Olympics, it is a showcase for Vancouver, a city in Canada. Nobody talks about the Chinese Olympics or Australian Olympics- Sydney and Beijing. You'll also note that every sign says Vancouver 2010, none say Canada 2010 or Quebec 2010. And as always, that perceived slight is inevitable. Quebecs feelings are hurt because they are not the center of attention for a couple of weeks. -

That is not an apt comparator because the actual mortgage rates are quite a bit less than that. You have quoted the posted rates. Note also that very few people take 7 or 10 year rates. New buyers would rarely qualify for 7 or 10 year rates too. Do you have a link to 25 year term rates for residential properties(they are common in commercial property)? I have not seen these in my lifteime, though they were common in my parents era. -

That is crazy talk. Society is to blame. The government should do something. -

$400 maximum in Alberta, y'all are getting screwed........ Same with the ridiculous amounts you pay to simply transfer land/house from one person to another. Insane. I'd get rid of the tax that pays federal political parties $1.75 for every vote they get. -
You are right, except for those little buntosses in WW1, WW11, Korea, the Boer War and Afghanistan. We will turn a blind eye to those too. I demand that Canada withdraw all its troops, warships and warplanes from Gaza immediately.

I covered that with 'business plan'. The Oscars are about making money for the industry, why would they bother promoting some obscure but great flick that doesn't make them money regardless of quality. Oh, they do toss in the odd wildcard or sentimental fave to pretend they are artistes rewarding artistes, but the evidence says otherwise.
-
I don't agree that every year does not produce at least 5 really good movies, that is not so hard to do or hard to identify them. The problem is that the Academy refuses to acknowledge some excellent candidates because they just don't fit the business plan which controls the process of nomination.

Has anybody else noticed that CBC Radio refers to the Canadian govt almost always as the 'Harper government' or 'Harpers Tories'? Through all the years of Chretiens reign, I never once heard it referred to as Chretiens government, it was just the government or federa govt.. They also frequently do not call him Prime Minister, they just say 'Harper'. No bias there, oh no.

Recession? Depression? Who knows. I'm preparing for the worst... we'll run the house on static electricity, heat with wood, and buy an extra freezer that we can fill with the neighbours.

That is just silly, both coments. To compete is to be human. We are hardwired to compete, it is what feeds your family and improves the gene pool. As a species we can rationalize anything, including the 'let's all hold hands and cooperate' schtick.

This is a much, much better movie than the tedious Jarhead. I like that it does not flagwave, and the focus is on the warrior and not the war. Not the best movie of 2009, but one of the best. It is a pretty weak year.

The industry is most degraded when you provide an audience to such horrors as Cher, Swift, any of the Simpsons except Homer and the autofellatio-fest that is the Grammies. Shame on you. -
Yeah, the primary education system in America is the envy of the developed world.....the public schools in the US are a disgrace and a shambles.

First. let me point oput that the place being discussed is Alberta, so large numbers of Libs/NDP would be an oxymoron. Evidence? Don't know of any specific because nobody asked party affiliation when registering, but I do know there was a) a major viral campaign to get out the vote when it became clear that Morton might get elected. Not just the Tory vote, but the vote by everybody and there were huge lineups that had been absent on the first ballot, and the people in them were not all Tories. It was actually one of Albertas better moments, rejecting the swine Morton in particular. This is part of the backlash. -
Nice dodge, but doesn't it sadden you to see the Godbotherers completely hijack your country?

From the fat into the fire, America has replaced royalty- worship with official, institutionalized Jesus worship. You can't possibly get elected as President there without a personal relationship with Jebus. In 2010, in a supposedly secular state. Saudi II.
