  1. When Yanukovich started moving towards closer ties with Russia, memories of the holodomor energized the Ukrainian people to have him impeached. They didn't need the Americans to push them. Claims of the CIA being involved may be true. But you can bet the GRU was also working hard to stop Yanukovich's impeachment. (While he was impeached, there were a few votes short of conviction, but he vacated the presidency by fleeing to Russia, so he effectively resigned.)
  2. President Biden is only one of many western leaders to use that phrase. It took several years for the combined might of the United Nations to defeat Hitler. We made a mistake in 1936-1939 in believing we could talk Nazi Germany to death. If Ukraine falls by our abandoning them, like Hitler, Putin will regroup and attack a NATO member in the belief the west won't do anything. That is the kind of miscalculation that will lead to the most terrible war in history.
  3. Sixty years ago, an American President stood in front of the Berlin Wall and said:"Two thousand years ago -- Two thousand years ago, the proudest boast was civis Romanus sum. Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is "Ich bin ein Berliner."There are many people in the world who really don't understand, or say they don't, what is the great issue between the free world and the Communist world. Let them come to Berlin. There are some who say -- There are some who say that communism is the wave of the future.Let them come to Berlin. And there are some who say, in Europe and elsewhere, we can work with the Communists.Let them come to Berlin. And there are even a few who say that it is true that communism is an evil system, but it permits us to make economic progress.Lass' sie nach Berlin kommen.Let them come to Berlin....All -- All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin. And, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words --"Ich bin ein Berliner."President John F. Kennedy,June 26, 1963West BerlinNow it is time to update that sentiment: "There are many people in the world who really don't understand, or say they don't, what is the great issue between the free world and the Putin's world. Let them come to Ukraine. There are some who say -- There are some who say that Putin is the wave of the future.Let them come to Ukraine. And there are some who say, in Europe and elsewhere, we can work with Putin.Let them come to Ukraine. And there are even a few who say that it is true that Putin's kleptocracy is an evil system, but it permits us to make economic progress.Lass' sie nach Kyev kommen.Let them come to Kyev. All free people, wherever they may live, are citizens of Ukraine. And therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words--"Ich bin ein Ukrainian."
  4. The other alternative is to reduce the population, but that entails cutting back on immigration and is a long term process. Hopefully, the price of housing will help to encourage people to move out of BC. Not a realistic solution, I know, but it is heartbreaking to see the natural beauty of BC trampled under foot, and clear cut.
  5. I read on yahoo news that he planned to launch a "Satan II" missile to coincide with President Biden's visit to the Ukraine. It didn't happen. Failure to launch is an apt symbol of how life is going for President Putin. Of course I have no confidence in the veracity of yahoo news.
  6. In the spirit of CrakHoBarbie, I too will admit I was wrong, and thank you to Contrarian for setting President Putin's KGB career correctly. Just because I want to believe something, I admit I was wrong. I still maintain he is no Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov.
  7. President Putin's career in the KGB was to sit at a table in the office and cut newspaper clippings. He was hardly James Bond.
  8. I would never advocate civil war. Those who advocate separation will cause a civil war among Albertans, between the separatists and the loyalists. The only case of separation I can recall that did not descend into civil war was Czechoslovakia. If they can avoid that, there would still be the problem of the flight of investment and people.
  9. Alberta would be consumed by civil war. I don't thing they would have the capacity to prevent a Canadian corridor between Saskatchewan and BC.
  10. BC has hydro power and, in the interim while we transition off oil as a fuel, we can import it. The point is a handful of loyalists will be able to bring a renagade provisional government in Alberta to its knees. Geography is the enemy of a separatist Alberta.
  11. Okay. First achievement was building the multi-partisan coalition to prevent a hostile US congress from wrecking NAFTA. Second achievement was to pull together a team of all Provincial governments to respond to a deadly pandemic, saving thousands of Canadian lives, while the pestilance raged through our neighbour visting upon them the most terrible catastrophe in US history. Yes, the grits have under performed on several files, but, when it came to real crises, they stepped up and did a good job. Perhaps the leaders of the opposition would have done as well. They would have received the same advice the professionals in the civil service provided to the current government, but the grits were in power and they get the credit. None of these laurels belong solely to the Federal Government. They are shared by the Provinces as well.
  12. Since I never click on links, could you outline the gist of what this is about?
  13. If is is not a sport, why is it so much fun? If it is not a sport, why do we have politics? It is important to treat it as a sport because it works best if the participants respect the rule that it doesn't matter if you win or lose, it is how you play the game. We all hope, the experience of a sore loser who refuses to lose with grace, is an anomaly or the cocept of a peaceful transition is in serious trouble. The same applies to winners. You never gloat over victory. It is bad form.
  14. You point out the decline in Christian faith, but that is being compensated for by the rise in Islam. The dissenter denominations are on the rise in the US and parts of Canada. Remember, the Judeo-Christian religions are newcomers, just part of the latest versions of the hundreds, if not thousands of religions that have come and gone over the course of human existance. Neanderthals held religious beliefs. God is God. We have same sex marriages because we have finally overcome some peoples fear. It has no impact on the straight majority, but it means everything to our children, parents, aunts and uncles , who were born gay. That freedom to have what the majority have has a huge positive impact on their quality of life. Teaching the facts about sexual orientation is based on the right of every child to be able to go to school and be safe. MAiD was a response to constitutional rights. I'm not a constitutional lawyer, but the Supreme Court found that the denial of a person's right to end their life under specific circumstances was unconstitutional. I don't know if you have ever witnessed the scene of a conventional suicide, but I hope you haven't. If a person is determined to take their own life, they will if they are physically able. MAiD was designed for people who are not able to take such action and it is far more dignified than hanging (believe me, hanging is a lot more horrific than what you see on TV) or sticking a shotgun in your mouth to spray bits and pieces of your head around to be seen by your children and spouse.
  15. Civilization is the organization of society. In what manner is the organization of society declining? In what way is Canada "broken?"
  16. Mr. Prager says that changes in morality has an effect on the health of a civilization. I don't see any evidence of that. Under the most immoral emperors in the most immoral of societies, the Roman civilization stretched from the Scottish border to Mesopotamia. As England embraced the likes of Johnny Wilmott 2nd Earl of Rochester, the Libertine, the British Empire began to grow to a point where the sun never set on the Empire. In the 19th century, the streets of London were awash in gin. Morality has no bearing on the health of civilization. Prager criticized Rep. Ellison for taking his oath on the Quran instead of the Bible, but as a Jewish person, would he not support freedom of religion? He was born into a society where he would have been denied entry into many restaurants and club because of his faith. In the 1990's Prager supported women's rights to safe abortion. The essence of freedom of religion is each of us has the choice to conduct our lives according to our personal beliefs and conscience, as long as it does not impinge on the rights of others. The same goes for freedom of thought and speech. We each have the right to be Tory, Socred, NDP, Grit or communist. Our politics are our own business.
  17. Just out of curiosity, RedDog, have you ever considered what would happen to Alberta if she decided to leave Canada? Alberta would be landlocked with no access to the sea. The layout of the transportation network is a thin string between Edmonton and Calgary. It is extremely vulnerable for attack by loyalists. The US will not allow the Keystone pipeline into the US. BC will not only prevent more pipelines, but will probably shut off the lines that exist now. You will no longer have access to Saskatchewan's uranium. You will see a massive exodus of business and investment. With no access to markets, the oil patch and the oil sands will shut down. So, welcome back to Canada. We missed you. ?
  18. That is a nice overview of a democracy. I presume you are a newcomer to Canada so you are unfamiliar with this country. Canada is not a democracy. I can't think of any country that claims to be a democracy. There are military juntas, republics and monarchies. (I apologize to the rest of you for being repetitive.) Just so we are clear, Canada is a Monarchy. We can quibble about "constitutional," but the fact remains, we have a King. We have a Parliament to advise the King and to vote taxes to pay for the policies the King's ministers propose. In Myanmar, they have a military junta. Red China, Russia, the USA and North Korea have presidents. We do not. So, you need to understand, Canada is a Monarchy and your obsession with some utopian "democracy" doesn't apply to Canada. Thank God.
  19. Mako, you need to relax. You seem to be agitated by this but it is only politics. Did life change with the result of the Super Bowl? Did the course of human events go off course because the Roughriders didn't win the Grey Cup? Politics is a sport, a contest. It doesn't really matter who wins. It is how you play the game that counts. Otherwise, it isn't fun.
  20. The Bible not withstanding, traditional marriage over the last 2000 years has been arranged by the families to elevate the family's status and wealth. The idea of a voluntary union or marrying for love is very new and novel. The head of the family will choose the spouse for their son or daughter and reject their choice if it is deemed unsuitable. Most recently we have seen this when the King, as Prince of Wales, wished to marry for love but was over ruled and assigned a spouse deemed more acceptable for the family. Sometimes, as in this case, a traditional marriage does not work. The traditional marrige is the same for Princes or the children of blacksmiths.
  21. You are incorrect. Traditional marriage is the union between a man and a woman's estate and status. It is a business contract arranged by parents.
  22. First, there was nor evidence of fraudulent votes sufficient to make any difference in the election. The final arbitrator of such claims is the courts. But what the heck do you mean "(my) side of the isle." Are you calling me a yankee? If so, you are insulting Bush-cheney and our other wonderful American Friends. My side resides with all those courageous American Tories who fought and died for their King and country. They gave up everything, save honour. Go wash out your mouth with soap. ??
  23. I won't call you a liar. Rather, you are mis-informed. The Electoral College voted 306 votes for Vice President Biden and 232 votes for President Trump. I am surprised you do not know these things, given you say you were educated in Florida.
  24. That statement is as incorrect as you saying a patriot American who supported the American revolution as being pro Stalin, because the American revolution led to the Russian Revolution and Joe Stalin and the Holodomor. You can put me on record as being opposed to any kind of slavery. Are you baiting us?
  25. Yes, as part of a NATO operation at the behest of the United Nations. What is your problem with the US helping remove Gaddafi or Hitler? We would hope that a Republican President would have acted similarly, lending assistance to the UN and NATO.
