We have to generate electricity some how and while thorium is the most effecient and cheapest option, it isn't ready yet. Western Canada is the Saudi Arabia of uranium. More people die in traffic accidents in Saskatchewan in one year than have been killed in nuclear power accidents in the whole world in its 80 years of existence. (103 people +/-)

How far into the future? (I did not mention gas.) It is petroleum and coal that is the issue. You cannot operate machinery without lubrication. That means no rail transport, no electrical generation, ...the list goes on. We have less than 200 years of coal and oil left in Canada if we don't export it. When the coal runs out, we have no more steel. When the oil runs out, no more lubrication for electrical generation. We can build all the gas fired plants, nuclear reactors and LFTR thorium reactors we want, but with out oil to lubricate the generators, they won't work. The pumps that operate the cooling systems in the uranium reactors will sieze up. I hear a lot about the rights of the unborn, but if a person believes we have a duty to our Great-Great Grandchildren, pause for a moment and try to put yourself in their shoes.

If we keep selling (giving away) our petroleum resources there won't be any left for future generations. We have a debt owing to Canadians in the future because it is their oil and coal we are giving away and burning. What is your (Blackbird) plan to ensure our decendents will have sufficient fossil resources to survive?

You are right of course. It is ironic. The Conservative government refused to arm our Honest John and Bomarc missiles with nuclear warheads in 1963. As a result, the govenment fell and the Liberals campaigned on a promise to give the Canadian Forces nuclear weapons. The pro- nuclear Liberals under Mike Pearson won. If we had our own independent nuclear weapons, we would not have NATO, or the Americans telling us what we can and can't do. I support NATO, but nobody wants to pay for a viable conventional military. We are surrounded by the three Super-powers all armed with nuclear weapons. Ukraine has the same population as Canada. They were the third largest nuclear power in the world. Then, they were suckered into giving away their 2900 nuclear weapons in exchange for a "guarantee" to defend their borders and sovereignty. The guarantors were UK, Russia and the USA. If they had declined the deal, there would have been no invasion and tens of thousands of Ukrainians and Russians would still be alive. For over fifty years, I have advocated Canada have a viable conventional force. I got no where.

I took the lazy way out and looked it up on Wikipedia. I discourage using Wikipedia, but, Hypocrisy, thy name is Mandy. However Wikip. says "Poilievre was born in Calgary, Alberta." I don't put much stock in the veracity of Wikipedia. -

Moi aussi. -
Doug, I love your eloquence, I respect your expertise in military matters, but we have different views on liberals, Conservatives, the extreme importance of the core Conservative values, and the potential for an invasion of Canada by China. For others, who would put money ahead of national honour, I did the calculations and the money Canadians would receive by becoming the 51st - 61st states comes to 30 pieces of silver.

But, it is for our commitment to NATO. It makes up our 2% +. Sufficient nuclear weapons not only satisfies our NATO commitment, but it deters any Russian or Chines incursions. Why would our US allies be opposed to that. They have been (rightfully) asking us to provide for out own defence for decades. The ability to turn any enemy into a radioactive glass plate makes for a pretty good deterrent.

Liberal Party Leadership Race

Friends, Canadians, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Justin, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Justin. The noble Pierre Hath told you Justin was ambitious: If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Justin answer’d it. Here, under leave of Pierre and the rest– For Pierre is an honourable man; So are they all, all honourable men– Come I to speak in Justin’s funeral. He was my friend, faithful and just to me: But Pierre says he was ambitious; And Pierre is an honourable man. Justin hath brought many trade agreements home to Canada Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill: Did this in Justin seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Justin hath wept: Ambition should be made of sterner stuff: Yet Pierre says he was ambitious; And Pierre is an honourable man... Yet Pierre says he was ambitious; And, sure, he is an honourable man. I speak not to disprove what Pierre spoke, But here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love him once, not without cause: What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him? O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason. Bear with me; Apologies to Mrs. Shakespear's little boy Billy -
My great-uncle was the head of "Project Nine," the heavy water plant in Trail BC during the war. That was part of Canada's contribution to the Manhattan project to build the atomic bomb. By the mid 1950's , Canada had the materials, technology and engineering expertise to build our own nuclear weapons. We still have everything we need to start production. I've never heard of this. Can you enlighten me?

It is interesting that the three front runners in the race for the head grit, are all westerners. It looks like a dead cert we are going to have a western Canadian as Prime Minister, however briefly. I think the last westerner PM was Joe Clark, the only politician who ever beat a Trudeau. When Mr. Poilievre is appointed, we'll have a two-fer. Two westerners in a row. -
American Aggression Thread

If the US invaded, we would have to absorb them at first and then bleed them out over time. They lost to the Viet Namese and the Taliban. After the invasion, we will have "the right to bear arms. When you combine the regular force with the reserves and the almost half million vets, they will not have a pleasent time. We also have the advantage of access to their homeland. That's not something the Taliban and the Viet Cong had. As "Americans," we can travel anywhere in the continental US and terrorize them. It would likely take many years, but they would leave eventually. Of course, in 1472 days, a different administration will take office and will undo everything President Trump may or may not do. The US is a great nation of generous friendly people. If you are going to be conquered, you could not find a nicer over lord. This is all just fun and ill mannered humour. The US will not invade. -
Breaking News: Trudeau expected to resign Monday.

He has to do something. Do you have any idea what the greenhouse effect is? With regard to citizens who are transgender, you you don't want M2F to be allowed to play sports but you say nothing about the other half, the F2M citizens. Are they prohibited to participate? Canadian voters will not permit the level of spending and participation required to re-build the Canadian Forces capable of defending the country. Inspite of many of the things I have said, I really hope I have underestimated him. We need that level of majority to face down the American government. It would be great if the CPC government could reframe the dynamics with them as a great opportunity for both countries. -

Nope. It is still the only system that works in the Canadian context. The only alternative would be a run-off election in ridings where no candidate gets 50% of the votes. Or, we could just stop voting for the splinter parties. In his defence, it was the NDP that killed electoral reform because they were fixated on the stupid proportional representation fiasco and refused to budge. There is no way PR can work in a riding. -

That is a pretty broad statement without foundation. The team he assembled to fight the worst crisis Canada has faced since 1945 had extraordinary positive results. The economic difficulties we faced as a result, pale in comparison to the mitigation of the potential death toll had the governments not responded as they did. -

People defer to Mr.Poilievre's false claim to be a Conservative. I have yet to hear him utter a single thing that expresses core Conserative values. -

The fact is, even after the appointment of Poilievre, the basic policies won't change, unless Pierre wants to be a one term Prime Minister. Being PM doesn't mean you can do anything you want. Everything you do has consequences. He will find he is confined to follow the advice of his senior public servants who have seen it all before and have a clear understanding of where the mines are buried. Not listening to the advice of the professionals is what destroyed Trudeau, first on SNC and finally on finance. He will replace the carbon tax with something worse, the debt will continue to climb because of the cost of Covid, and the American Administration is going to cause severe economic problems for us. The pressure to spend 2% of GDP on NATO will be met with indifference to down right resistance from the electorate. Human rights, - your rights,- (another name for "woke") will still be protected by the constitution. And the Poilievre government will have M. Blanchett as Leader of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition. While Trudeau and Poilievre are all flash and no bang, M. Blanchett will bring a whole new experience to Mr.s Poilievre's life. He will soon be missing those care free days in opposition when nothing you do or say has consequences. -

Canada338 now puts CPC at 236 seats with the Bloc in 2nd place at 45 and the Grits at 35. NDP with 25 seats. In other words, the CPC has a 201 seat lead over the Liberals. M. Blanchett is going to have the best job in Parliament, Leader of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition. It comes with a nicer house than the PM's too. Go easy on the Champaign my friends. If we had PR, Trudeau would once again lead a minority government with a coalition of Bloc, and NDP and Elizabeth May holding the balance of power. -
No it doesn't.
