  1. 6 year olds are not being taught about sexual consent or sexual activity at all. They're being taught to recognize inappropriate touching and to say no in threatening situations. -k
  2. The problem with getting your information from such slanted, biased, one-sided sources is that they'll misrepresent the facts to lead you to the conclusion they want you to draw. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/karyn-pickles/ontario-sex-education-curriculum-update_b_6746012.html -k
  3. I think the racial angle in these incidents is being exaggerated and making people miss the larger issue-- which is that cops are dicks to everybody. The issue isn't that cops are racists, it's that they're a bunch of assholes. That issue might be amplified in situations where police are interacting with black people, but ultimately the problem is the same. Enthusiasm for excessive force, lack of accountability, a culture that values protecting their buddies above the rules. -k
  4. Guys, just a cautionary note... this is getting a little heated, and I don't want people to give Chuck an excuse to swing the suspension stick around again. I have a hunch he's itching to use it. Be cool, everybody. -k
  5. I thought you were going to videotape all the disgusting debauchery and filth that goes on at Pride for a documentary you were going to make. Am I thinking of someone else? -k
  6. Well, if this politician really believes that these people just don't know any better, the obvious follow-up question is why vast numbers of people who don't know that rape is wrong are being allowed into Sweden. -k
  7. What is CAFE? I think that historically the Pride parade has always been a political event, and its very nature is inherently SJW-oriented. I believe that Black Lives Matter started in response to police violence against black people. Other than that, I agree with what you're saying. Initially, I was on board. But it quickly devolved from its original focus into an ongoing temper-tantrum. I started a thread a while back on the subject... as with the Occupy protests, whatever point it originally had got lost as it turned into just a vehicle for angry people to lash out. Roughing up a white student in a library whose only crime was trying to study while being white was bad enough... but blocking an ambulance from taking someone to the hospital is the point of no return. These activists are now actively sabotaging their own cause and whatever goodwill it had. -k
  8. Are you sure? This article seems to indicate that Queers Against Israeli Apartheid disbanded over a year ago. -k
  9. yeaaaaahhh except they'd get their asses stomped. -k

  11. Even disregarding the growing capability of non-fossil electrical sources, it's also worth pointing out that burning fossil fuels in electrical generating plants is more efficient and cleaner than burning it in your car. Some complain that "you're just moving the tailpipe", but you're not just moving the tailpipe out of city streets (which is in itself not a bad thing) you're also connecting the tailpipe to a much more efficient engine. Internal combustion engines in cars are pretty lousy in efficiency due to the need to continually change speed and move out of their peak efficiency ranges, plus the inherent friction and losses associated with internal combustion engines. Burn the fuel in a power plant, and you get to use more efficient topologies (ie, big efficient steam turbines instead of piston engines) and you get to run the generators in their optimum RPM zone all the time. Plus you get to put emissions scrubbers on your power plant and possibly carbon sequestration technology in the future. Plus we can add non-fossil electrical sources to the power grid. Plus, electrical engines whip ass on gasoline engines in every aspect except the ability to carry enough fuel to go very far. Once energy storage technology advances far enough, there'll be no further point in driving gasoline. -k
  12. That's crap. Lithium-ion isn't a chemistry, it's an umbrella name for a whole family of chemistries that are seeing continual change and development. If you've looked at the name on the letter head and said "it was lithium-ion 10 years ago and it's still lithium-ion so nothing has changed", you've clearly missed the boat, my friend. -k
  13. Just saying that the manufacturers know that the batteries will wear out a long time before the rest of your car and have already planned for their replacement. And also that it's quite possible that the replacement batteries you get in a few years are going to be better than the ones your car had when you bought it. -k
  14. Battery storage technology might not be improving as fast as people wish it was improving, but it is improving rapidly year-over-year. And when you replace the batteries in your current Volt or Tesla S a few years down the road, it seems reasonable to expect that the replacement batteries are going to be significantly better than the batteries that the car came with. -k
  15. One of the things I like about the direction the Oilers have taken since Chiarelli took over is that they are a lot tougher and meaner. He has gotten rid of weak little cream puffs and brought in monsters like Lucic, Maroon, Kassian, Cracknell... These are 235 pound angry dudes who just want to wreck stuff. The way the Western conference is going, having muscle and physicality in the lineup isn't an option, it's mandatory. I'm so sick of my team getting pushed around and beat up every night. That's not happening anymore. Win or lose, teams who play us are going to feel like they've been in a battle. I also like that Lucic has been part of winning organizations and has a championship ring and even going back to junior hockey has always been a leader and a winner. That's something the Oilers have kind of been missing. Also he is super passionate and super intense and I don't think he is the kind of guy who would go out drinking and partying after losing a blow-out game. I remember reading somewhere that when Chris Pronger came to the Oilers he was really intense about getting his workout time in, and would go in to the training staff and say he needed extra time on the equipment and that kind of thing. And pretty soon everybody on the team was going to the training-staff and saying they needed extra workout time. Because Chris Pronger was doing it. And when you see first-hand somebody with that kind of pedigree doing what it takes to keep on top, you feel like a shmuck for not doing just as much. I hope that Lucic can have the same kind of effect on the other guys. The other thing about Lucic is that he's completely mental. There's no limit to how passionate he is. Sometimes it can be a detriment... bad penalties and so on. But after many years of the Oilers being the weakest and most indifferent team in the league, this kind of injection of passion and physical intensity is just what they need. And it's contagious... players will want to stick up for each other when they know that their team-mates will stick up for them too. And that's not even mentioning Adam Larsson... the Oilers haven't had a defender this good since Chris Pronger left. After watching this year's playoffs and seeing how difficult guys like Viktor Hedman and Alex Peterangelo are to play against, I'm more convinced than ever that having that guy on your defense is important. The guy who can play 25+ minutes of mistake-free defensive hockey against the toughest forwards and absorb scoring chances like a black hole. I haven't personally watched enough of Adam Larsson to know for sure if he's that guy, but everything I have read about him says that he is. And he's only 23 and he's only improving. All these years since Pronger left, the Oilers have lacked that on their defense. And they were afraid to make the big trade to bring in somebody like that. But clearly Chiarelli isn't afraid. Trading Taylor Hall takes massive gonads. I think it is going to pay off. -k
  16. I would expect that considering the state of the various technologies involved, the battery technology will improve leaps and bounds faster than the other technologies involved in an electric car. Electric motors and electric generators are mature technologies... computer processors improve by increments... and firmware is upgradeable. But battery technology is advancing rapidly. The limited lifespan of batteries, and the necessity of replacement, is something that everybody is aware of, and something that has to be designed into an electric vehicle. I would hope that the electric vehicles and battery packs are being designed such that buyers of today's electric vehicles can benefit from tomorrow's advancements in battery technology. -k
  17. Leviticus is primarily civil law for Israelites. The 10 commandments are moral law straight from the big man himself. There's a considerable difference. -k
  18. He scored 20 last season, and I doubt playing with Connor McDavid is going to make him any worse. He just turned 28... it's not like old age should be a factor. -k
  19. Ultimately, if God is unhappy with those of us who aren't living according to the Old Testament, he's can come down here and deal with us in person, or he can talk to us when we're dead. -k
  20. oh, ok, so women are nanny-type people, that's what you're saying? -k
  21. The Oilers just signed Milan Lucic to ride shotgun for Connor McDavid! I expect at least 25 goals and 25 beat-downs from him this season. -k

  23. Don't you think it's more likely that with the uncertainty of the outcome removed and a week to recover from their incorrect last-minute bets on Remain, the markets have righted themselves because of stability, not because they secretly still think Britain will stay? - k
