Isn't a little early to be whitewashing Harper for his misdeeds? The international media is pointing the finger at Canada in general (and Harper in particular) for politics racist and anti-Muslim I posted a link yesterday that had links to about 8 major international media sites). Seems like he's "misunderstood" by a few people.

Yeah and Chretien claimed that wasn't personally responsible for the sponsorship scandal. Harper has introduced and/or accentuated a style of politics and campaigning that is divisive, intolerant and just plain unpleasant. IF (and it's a big if) he didn't personally endorse the cheating, it was certainly his leadership style that allowed and encouraged it. I hope his successor can manage to change the tone.

Worrying, I call it. Polls underestimated Conservative support in 2011.

Don't tell him that - EKOS has been the only one coming up with results he likes.

Ontario being sued by Texas Billionaire
ReeferMadness replied to Topaz's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Yup. That's the problem with these trade deals (which are really mostly investor deals). They give corporations rights that citizens don't have. You can sue a country and have your case heard in secret by a tribunal of trade lawyers. And the awards can't be appealed. How sweet is that. This is something that is almost never brought up in the media, for whatever reason. And the TPP would see that right be given to a corporations in a bunch more countries. -
Quebec might be a predictor - but it's not just Quebec. There are so many ridings across the country - Ontario, BC, even Alberta, where it could go either way. Lots of 3 way races too.

You're joking. You see that all of the newspapers are still endorsing Harper. Or, in one case, the Conservative but not Harper.

Not impossible but completely unlikely. A Conservative minority is much more likely than a Liberal majority. You're worrying about the wrong thing. Look at electionprediction.org. It's built bottom up from local people on the ground.

It's way too early to judge Harper's impact. He's cheated in the last 3 elections, introduced the permanent campaign, politicized non-partisan institutions and has brought intolerance into politics in a way it hasn't been in decades. If this becomes the new normal in Canadian politics, then he will have caused long term damage to the political landscape. Look what's happening down south. History shows that sooner or later what goes on down there winds up in Canada.

Even Lynton Crosby is done with Harper.

Yeah, that's gonna happen.

This is just hilarious. Harper shows up unannounced at a seniors facility and one of the residents tells him off.

Who are they going to do a deal with? An interim leader that won't be around to live up to his/her end? A headless caucus? Stephen Harper?
-
Even the National Post is mocking the Conservatives desperate reach-out to the Ford brothers here and here. The paper (or at least its owner) is still endorsing them, though. Pathetic.

Other than you proving that you don't understand democracy - nothing.
-
There's a big difference between Harper stepping down in a couple of years vs Harper stepping down before delivering a throne speech. The NDP would either be negotiating with Harper (which would be suicidal) or with an interim leader(which would be idiotic). And in the NDP base, heads would be exploding. I don't see it.
-
And how are you going to explain this to the Harper base, most of whom think they're electing a PM, who, according to people around here, is like a CEO?
-
oh, that's so inspiring. No wonder you're so loyal.

in favor of.... a panda?

I don't consider internet security non-existent but I also don't think that this is necessarily what's going to save voting. First, there is a legitimate concern about knowing who is voting. If you have a married couple and one of them cares about politics and the other doesn't you're going to get one person voting for 2. In some cases you might get a parent voting for adult kids or kids voting for elderly parents. The problem is you don't know for sure who is on the end of the computer. More to the point, if you can't take a half hour to go to vote, are you really going to spend 10 minutes on the computer to vote?

Maybe in some parallel universe.....

David Axelrod, former senior adviser to Obama, has tweeted support for Trudeau.

Coyne's loyalty is to his principles, not to a party. After 10 years of Harper, I can understand how that p word might seem foreign.
-
What arrogance. Coyne isn't a partisan voice - he's an independent voice. The fact that a classic small c conservative like Coyne would be so critical of Harper Conservatives should give you pause - but instead you call him a Liberal. Proof the Harper Derangement Syndrome doesn't afflict the critics, it's a malady of the blind supporters.
