  1. I think that's historical revisionism. Women didn't get the right to vote in the US until 1920 so you can't tell me the law against bigamy was some backlash against patriarchy. It was enforced morality in the Victorian era. You don't create egalitarianism by removing peoples rights to do things that don't cause harm.
  2. Did Chretien and Martin cheat on elections?
  3. You would equate wife beating to consensual bigamy?
  4. I know someone, married and with kids. Her husband has an ongoing relationship with another woman, also with kids. They're all aware and even do things together. So, it's basically bigamy. It seems to work for everyone. #whoamItojudge
  5. If he gets even a plurality, it will be a fight to get rid of him. And if he stays on, I expect he will be around for at least a couple of years yet. Even if he left tomorrow, though, there are lots of things I'd like to see that won't happen in a Conservative government including action on climate change, electoral reform, marijuana legalization, return to evidence-based policy and an end to the insidious downsizing of government. So, the problem is Harper certainly but not just Harper.
  6. If we get a conservative minority, expect Harper to game the system, just like he did in 2008. It's not worth the risk.
  7. Definitely, electoral reform will be better served by a minority government. I question whether the Liberals were positioned to get one anyway, though. I'm still more concerned about the Conservatives getting back in, tbh.
  8. If you do that, you will hurt the poor who currently don't pay income taxes.
  9. Nice try. It's unlikely that the combination of LIberal and NDP seats will be under 170.
  10. It looks pretty close to me but I'm think you're being a bit generous with the BQ.
  11. Latest from Polltracker. Oh, my. The Liberals and NDP continue to climb while the Conservatives continue to drop. At this rate, could Harper's heroes come in 3rd? Liberals - 35.6 Conservatives - 30.4 NDP - 23.8
  12. And that's the whole point here. It's not illegal. Based on my reading of Kady's article, it's not even against the conflict of interest guidelines, because he's not a lobbyist. Does it look bad? Certainly, which is why he quit. Is it bad? I don't know and I won't know until I can get some context. Has anyone seen the full email? And will Gagnier have a spot in Trudeau's PMO?
  13. The email was from Gagnier to 5 people in Trans Canada. The question is how did Canadian Press wind up with a copy? Was someone at Trans Canada hoping to hurt the Liberals to allow the Conservatives to get back in?
  14. Your link doesn't say it's illegal for lobbyists to be working on an election campaign - do you have any other evidence? I wouldn't defend this but I would say that I think that most people who are involved in elections will have other interests. It looks like Mr. Gagnier is perhaps looking to set himself up to be a lobbyist. The real question is what position is he in to influence a future government?
  15. It says we're in the middle of an election and 3 other parties will be trying to paint this in the worst way possible. Again, it would be good to see the full email. Context is everything.
  16. I think you're overstating the case. I wish it were different but it's commonplace for senior people in the civil service to move back and forth between government and the private sector. I'm sure that would be the case in an NDP government as well. It would have been better if the media had released the full text of the email so we could judge context.
  17. And because John A (another Conservative ) got away with gaming the system, unscrupulous leaders can get away with it forever. I can see how you think it's a great system.
  18. Oh, yeah. He has "reserve powers". Except he can't actually use them because if he does, he's interfering with democracy. Circular argument.
  19. You are factually wrong. The parliament "at dissolution" was not the parliament currently elected. The whole "I have confidence" until you prove I don't is a weakness. It allows an unscrupulous leader to game the system. Which is exactly what happened in 2008.
  20. The problem isn't with confidence - it's that the PM has way too many ways to game the system. The GG was originally intended to guard the power of the monarchy but the monarch has left the playing field to look after her corgis. Now the office is a toothless and mostly pointless position.
  21. And I'm talking about a PM using prorogation as a tool to game the system by avoiding parliament.
  22. They couldn't know that at the time. They lost the US - which would have been a huge blow. And the Monarchy was already losing power. The point is that the rules were designed to keep Canada in the fold, to prevent what happened in the USA.
  23. And that "limited duration" was long enough for Harper to lie to the people and swing public opinion. You do get that, don't you? So, our system is broken. Beyond repair. You keep on saying "enjoy confidence". Harper didn't have the confidence in 2008 and he almost certainly won't have it based on the makeup of next week's parliament. The problem is that he's allowed to play games and avoid parliament.
