Obama famously said that life is filled with wins and losses - mostly private. He noted that politics is different - the wins and losses are very public.

In 1984, Turner won in Vancouver-Quadra. If a leader can't organise, win his own riding, then he can't organise a government. ===== If Poilievre had won his riding, I reckon that the Conservatives would have kept him as leader. Now, with a Liberal NDP/Green bare majority for the next four years, he's gone.

This so-called Canada, our Confederation, has only existed for a hundred years or so. But I think that it's good. We get along. ==== This place, the rocks and trees, lakes mountains will exist long after any poster.

What happens next to the Conservative Party?
August1991 replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
1. Ford will never be a federal PM. 2. I was surprised at how well the Conservatives did in Ontario. 3. I expected the Bloc to do far better in Quebec. ==== I should have known better. Betsy, I believe, is a Filipina - she understands islands, languages, gossip. Several days before the election, I was in the south shore with assorted friends and they all spoke of Trump as a threat. I should have noted this. -
Trump Carney: First Oval Meeting
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Corrected: Canadian voters "in urban Canada and suburban Montreal" fell for Trump's gambit. -
I would like to be a fly on the wall to witness this. 1. Trump will look Carney directly in the eye and say: "I am the reason you are here." Make no mistake, Trump made Carney Canada's PM. And Trump knows it. Canadian voters fell for Trump's gambit. 2. In America, Trump is a developer who worked in New York real estate, a showman who now gets vote from ordinary, working Americans: He stands up for America. Carney supposedly stood up for Canada! Except Carney worked for Goldman-Sachs and has lived abroad for most of his life. 3. Trump has been through the wringer - we know too much about the guy. No one knows anything about Carney.

Predictions: Post Federal Election April 2024
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Disagree. If it's a Liberal majority, Carney will be on the plane to Edmonton within a week. The Liberals know how to collect/share the trough. -

Like sports, every election is a nail-biter. I haven't voted yet - but many people around me have. Curious. I suspect that many Canadians hear stories about American voting complications and want to vote. As I say, this is a referendum on Trump. And the Liberals are on the correct side. === I predict a Liberal majority - and a strong BQ opposition. Now then: will Poilievre stay in place? -
Predictions: Post Federal Election April 2024
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
If the Liberals win a majority, Carney will be another Martin - assuming he can keep people out of the trough. If they win a minority, it will be worse than Trudeau 1980. -
Predictions: Post Federal Election April 2024
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
All true. And I was wrong about Trump in 2016 too. ===== I just don't see a Tory minority in April 2025. I haven't done the provincial seat numbers but I think the Liberals have too many in Ontario. If the Conservatives get more seats than the Liberals, then PP could form a functional government with BQ support - as Harper did. As to Carney, I entirely agree. He's outta here if the Liberals lose. -
To my knowledge, no one in Montreal is forcing anyone to have a dog. I have walked dogs - today, for example. He pooped twice. (I picked up.) ===== I think it is wrong for homeless people to have dogs. If a person is incapable of organising their own life, it is wrong to impose their life-style on a domesticated animal.

The Economic Policy Trump is Executing
August1991 replied to Goddess's topic in Business and Economy
Trump wants to lower the value of the dollar. ====== Russia? Trump understands that to avoid world war, we need a new political arrangement. -
Monetary Policy vs Fiscal Policy: Canada/US History
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Business and Economy
The Americans do weird things: they made their Fed chair a Treasury Secretary. ====== Weird? Carney is now about to become our PM. -

I see no reference to Labrador. https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/rp-pr/csj-sjc/constitution/lawreg-loireg/p1t211.html -

Newfoundlanders. No mention of Labrador. Google: Newfoundland Caribou Great War -
Terre-Neuve et Quebec -Labrador
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I understand the desire of politicians to create the term "Serbia & Montenegro" to describe a political entity. "Newfoundland & Labrador" is a similar fiction. -

Newfoundland is not Labrador. Newfoundland is an island. Labrador is a coast. -

People like Margaret Atwood and Andrew Coyne have always surprised me - why do you speak of them. Robertson Davies is another story. He writes well. -
Predictions: Post Federal Election April 2024
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Conservative? Are you insane? Even if the Conservatives have more seats than the Liberals, they cannot survive a vote. ====== It will be a Liberal government - likely minority. At issue is whether they need NDP or BQ seats. -

Disagree. IMHO, Carney is a Paul Martin Liberal. Carney wants Canada to be great - like New Jersey. -

CdnFox, you live in English-Canada NPD fantasyland. ==== The federal Liberals will have: a) majority b) minority (with NPD) c) minority (with BQ) -

Poilievre? He's going to be leader of the opposition. Will the CPC change him? Or change his advisors? ==== At present, we don't know what kind of man he truly is.
