Americans are about to celebrate their 1776 Declaration, then their Constitution. What is sustainable? The people of Iceland, some 300,000 people -still today - have survived for over 1000 years. Newfoundlanders? On a desert island. Some 600,000 or so for over 500 years. Both Icelanders and Newfoundlanders are open, good people. Icelanders have their own language; Newfoundlanders were colonised. ===== The Finns have maintained their language - and dealt with the Russians, Soviets,

Nowadays, I still skate. I am jealous of the guys who cross-skate backwards. I never learned how to do that.
-
I too am not a sports-fan. I have no desire to choose a side in a zero-sum game. ==== As a young boy, I imagined myself as Bobby Hull or Gordie Howe. Late after dark, I skated and then walked home - very cold. And as it turns out, all for no purpose.

Spadina Expressway vs Decarie Expressway
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Davis famously said: "If we are building a transportation system to serve the automobile, the Spadina Expressway would be a good place to start. But if we are building a transportation system to serve people, the Spadina Expressway is a good place to stop." Drapeau famously said in 1973: « Il est aussi impossible pour les Jeux olympiques de Montréal de produire un déficit que pour un homme de devenir enceinte. » -
Montreal: People sleeping on the sidewalk
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Local Politics in Canada
In poor countries, I understand. (ExFlyer, have you been to a poor country?) In Canada, the people are not sleeping on the street because they are poor. ===== Point? In Canada, these people have dogs, tattoos and have money to buy paint to spray graffiti. -
Arm Movements: Trudeau Snr in 1968 & Trump in 2024
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Arts and Culture
I am astonished that no one else has noticed this. What Trudeau Snr did at 0:55 in the video is the same as Trump. Both men viewed themselves as the State: You kill me, you kill the State. ====== At the time, June 1968, Trudeau Snr was a federal PM facing a nationalist crowd. . -
Dead wrong. Clueless. Hongkong == Montreal. Toronto == Singapore.

I am not a US citizen. I have no right to vote in a US election. Yet, I receive numerous adverts/links about how to receive a ballot while abroad - and submit it.

Why America is Great: Donald & Kamala
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
Mearsheimer thinks that nationalism is a potent force. I imagine a discussion between Trudeau Snr and Mearscheimer. Did they ever meet? -
Spadina Expressway vs Decarie Expressway

And I was thinking Pax Plante and John Robarts. -
Government GDP Debt Ratio - What if?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
True, Trudeau Jnr has been borrowing/spending like a drunk sailor. The federal Liberals have hired many millenials to work in federal government jobs. But overall, our various Canadian governments are not in debt. Like Norway, Quebec has a Caisse. Ontario has the Teacher's. Canada's debt/GDP ratio, while rising because of Trudeau Jnr, is well below 100%. ===== The US federal government has made numerous promises to people. -
Government GDP Debt Ratio - What if?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Whatever. In 2008, I realized that many foreigners associate Canada with the US. And yet our two monetary/banking systems are radically different. -
Can Kamala Harris Still Ditch Walz?
August1991 replied to WestCanMan's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
BD, you're missing the point. Years ago I was aboard the HMCS Moncton while it visited Montreal. I bought a hat as a souvenir. Later, I wore it in Vermont. In a cafe, an American asked when I served. I explained that I didn't; who I was. No problem. But I never wore the hat again. For Americans, this is a big deal. -
WestCanMan, it's hard to find a dentist who will work for me alone - and not the dentist's pocketbook.
-
Herbie, you buy Kotex pads in male washrooms?
-
So why in God's good name are public M/F washrooms around the world the same size? It is obvious to me that women's washrooms should be larger, take up more square meters in the design phase of the building.
-
We select politicians the same way we choose a dentist: we want someone to act on our behalf. Unfortunately, this is a dentist for everyone. And about 1/3 of the people get free dental. The incentives are completely misaligned.

The CEO, Jensen Huang of NVDIA predicts (Google the quote) that English will replace coding. As if.... AI is very good at recognizing/deciphering patterns. Our DNA is filled with such. AI is not good at extrapolation in a universe where the future is random.

Kim Campbell = Kamala Harris
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
As people will say of Kamala Harris. Herbie, read Crosbie's book, No Holds Barred. -
Kim Campbell = Kamala Harris

Herbie, you're an American, and you don't know it. You want to control the world.
