Stephen Harpers Tactical Error

I hope we can hold the Liberals to a minority government. For that to happen the Cons have to get their act together. I am pulling for you guys. -
August1991.....was it you who introduced us to the phrase: Martin is a bad Liberal You know the Liberal approach to politics over the past 30 years, maybe more, has been to exploit the Quebec crisis. You know: If you do not vote Liberal, the country will break up. Charest is there for next few years, so can not use that one, but to win have to have a crisis. Right. Did you hear the report out today that Canada might be attacked by terrorists during the election period?

What must be discouraging for the governing Liberals is the Bloc strength. Source: Landscape of Federal Politics

Stephen Harpers Tactical Error
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Are the Cons only able to able to attack their opponents and not defend their positions? I wish they would devise some astute and popular policies, to help keep Liberals to a minority. -
Harper stated last week to Martin: Hold election in Fall As a result: 1 - lets Martin off hook for spring election, as Martin has no mandate to govern. 2 - exhibits fear, lack of confidence NDPs Jack Layton had best approach: BRING IT ON

Despite recent turmoil, voter support unchanged
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This is the big story of this poll. No post convention bounce for the Conservatives. Absolutely devastating news for Conservative supporters. The margin of error is 3.1% so any ups, or downs, less than that, are irelevant. Do you remember the media coverage last week leading up to the Conservative convention? It was massive. Combined with all the problems the Liberals are having these days sorting out the scandals. It appears to me that the Conservatives have peaked, and will now begin to head South. And I notice the Bloc is finally starting to shed some of its lead as well. Unfortunately it looks like a majority Liberal government to me. -

Devastating News for CPC in Latest Polls
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The devastating news for the Conservatives with the results of this latest poll confims that the CPC have chosen the wrong leader to lead them in the next elction. Look for the Conservative support to begin to drop now, as we get some distance from all the Conservative publicity from last weekend's leadership convention. -
With the massive publicity the CPC received last weekend for their leadership convention, and to have remained the same in the polls is absolutely devastating for the CPC and a major repudiation of Stephen Harper and what he represents. www.ctv.ca

Devastating news for CPC, nothing good for the NDP either, and I assume now that the Liberals will go on to form a majority government. -
Ok folks, it is almost Rock & Roll time. PM Martin was in Winnipeg today trying out his election style stump speech, where he dropped hints about a coming election. He's just a middle of the road guy, Martin says. This will be the first time for all three party leaders, Harper, Layton, and Martin, to be leading their respective parties into a federal election campaign.

I just came across this Globe article. This is the kind of situation I am talking about: Dear Mr. Martin: But what about the children?  -

-from The "Comment" section of the Globe and Mail today. I think this explains quite well another approach/theory for paying down the debt. Paying twice In some ways all this talk about the debt is a red hering. Of course the debt is important but this is just a diversion by the rich to avoid addressing the fundamental issue - Repair of Taxation The Government of Canada's number one priority needs to be redistributing the wealth, in a much nore equitable fashion in Canada, to arrest and reverse the growing gap between the rich and the poor. It is obscene what has happened to the increasing numbers of poor people in Canada. And that is the main reason Martin and the Liberals need to be booted out of office. Maybe Canada needs to impose a 10% death tax until the problem has been rectified. -
Canadians need to get to know the real Stephen Harper. If he wants to share who he is, he will debate and debate often, otherwise he will pay the price at the polls for hiding who he is. Hasn't Harper got enough problems already?

Is it ottawa south? do a google search she has a website she is running against the premier of ontario's brother, david mcguinty the NDP are hoping she will win - they consider her a marquee candidate globe article: Arar's wife tries politics, runs for NDP in Ottawa
-
Why the double standard? A lot of Canadians are very very worried about Mr Harpers plans. If he is not deceiving Canadians, if he has nothing to hide, he needs to avail himself of every opportunity to explain to Canadians what he represents, and what he believes in. Harper berated Belinda big time for not debating. Harper needs to do the right thing and debate his ideas with Layton. Otherwise it can come across as very, very hypocritical. And also it can come across as fear, afraid to share with Canadians what he really represents, for fear that Canadians don't support his ideas. Canadians are anxious to know him. I think Mr Harper should treat Canadians with more respect.

Harper is a seasoned politician, he hates the CBC, and he wanted opportunity to attack the CBC. CBC just did their job. If he is not ready for any question, why not? Does it mean he is trying to hide what he represents?
-
As Broadbent said when he launched his campaign, he is 2 years older in age than Martin, but 20 years younger in ideas. Looking good, Ed. I wonder what other seats the NDP can now look at in the Ottawa area. I'm sure their marque candidate, Mahar Arar's wife, Monia will make a good contest out of it. Can't hurt to have Broadbent's riding next door. Broadbent taking Ottawa Centre will be quite a symbolic victory, as it is the riding that includes the Parliament buildings, or immediately due South of them. Things are really beginning to look up for Jack Layton's NDP.

Public Accts Committee: Is It a Farce?
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This sure confirms for me that this committee needs to be leveled to the ground. Martin is exhibiting very strange strategy to try and sort this all out. Chretien would have done things much differently, I presume. -
As I continue to watch this circus unfold , I really am beginning to wonder what it must have been like during the McCarthy era. Sometimes I get the feeling I am observing a witch hunt. Myriam Bedard's comments on Wednesday really took the cake, and went way over the top, and now I am concerned for people's reputations, and don't know what to believe. One of the posters here suggested that Bedard may be a Bloc plant. Who knows? All I do know, is that I think this committee is out of control, is making a mockery of the situation, and needs to be shut down. It is time for the circus to leave Ottawa. Canadians have had enough. I believe Chantal sums it up well in the following article. Bédard cameo casts shadow on probe
