Bill C-465, PMB introduced by Michel Guimond, Bloc MP from Montmorency. Harper had the GG cover it in the throne speech but the Bloc jumped the gun. The Libs have said they expect to support it, the NDP is dithering. Don't see a downside to supporting this, mind you there are a lot of Muslims in Dion's riding.

Who is the most Republican candidate

A poll 13 months from the election? That's as useful as a square wheel. -

Bluntly, Hilly is a woman and Obama is black and there is no electable white male on the horizon for the Dems. -

Rudy would beat Hilly. And a Mormon would trump a female. -

I think Clinton will be the Democratic candidate. But she is too disliked by the public as a whole to win the big prize. -

What do Hilly and Rudy have in common? They are both liberals. Americans don't like liberals and that is why a liberal can't be elected President of the US next year. And Rudy is not a Republican. -

Governing "As If He Had a Majority"
maldon_road replied to jbg's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Effectively he has. -
If there is a significant criticism to be made of "Dumbledore's outing" it's the way the author did it. It should have been done in the book. Gay characters are becoming more and more common in fiction as homosexuality has become more accepted by the public but in a children's book to do it the way the author did it is to blindside parents who may have to explain to young kids what all the fuss is about.

Governing "As If He Had a Majority"
maldon_road replied to jbg's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
When the largest opposition party is not ready for an election it gives the PM more leverage to govern. Harper knows it would take a really egregious bill for the Libs to vote against them. So he can plan the legislation accordingly. And when he gets an issue he can take to the public - boom, he forces an election. Every minority party says it will govern as if it has a majority. None do, of course except Joe Who. -
I am pro-gay rights and have been that way all my life. And although I abhor some of the tactics they occasionally employ (like disrupting church services) it is ludicrous to compare them with Nazis.
-
Hard to believe that the seven provincial courts who upheld SSM and a majority of the House of Commons who voted for Bill C-38 could be equated with the doctrines of Naziism.

The GG could ask the Libs and Dippers to form a government but I think between them they only add up to about the same at the current CPC. They would have to indicate that they were prepared to do it but the numbers seem too low to have any chance of success. (And there are policy differences) Of course if Steph wants to commit political suicide he could form a government with the help of the Blockers.

According to "The Da Vinci Code" wasn't he supposed to have been shagging Mary Magdalene? It's relevant here since both that book and the Harry Potter series are fiction.

Given the protectionist sympathies that seem to be an on-going feature of US politics the upcoming election next year has resulted in a spate of articles such as this. And as the election takes higher profile (primary season is just around the corner) we will hear more calls for reduction of imports into the US and "fairer" trade. I expect that Ms Rodham Clinton to be especially vocal about it. Hilly still thinks that the 9-11 bombers entered the US from Canada so I can see us in her sights although with our new "super" dollar it is the Americans who are benefiting.

Homosexuality is legal. Gay marriage is legal. Anglicans bless gay couples. Gays live openly and are found in all walks of life - business, arts, politics, religion. You are equating them with murderers?
-
I've never read any of the Harry Potter books and I won't - solely because I'm not interested in witches and hobgoblins. I wouldn't know Dumbledore if I met him on the street. The only thing I'm glad about is that the author decided he is gay rather than, for example, a Muslim that might cause some adverse comment.

First of all it's only your opinion that it's not "normal". Many would disagree with you. And one character is hardly "assaulting kids". Didn't two gay Ontario politicians just get married? Are we supposed to keep that from kids? Let's not confuse legality with legitimacy. There are a lot of things that are legal that some people object to - abortion, birth control, divorce, tobacco, alcohol, homosexuality. But we can't hide from them. They are real.

I live 30 miles from the US border. I am glad it is the US and not North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, China, Burma, Syria...
-
First of all the work is fiction. As was "The Da Vinci Code" that so many got up in arms about. And furthermore so some guy's gay. It's a reality in today's world.

The age old debate. Do we go after the drug trade with a vengeance or do we tolerate it? Nobody disagrees with going after the heroin pushers but whether we should be assisting addicts by providing needles is another story - an issue in this country right now. And decrimming of marijuana is a hot issue, let alone legalizing it.

Gore and U.N. Panel Win Peace Prize for Climate Work

I agree. I've been called a "denier" myself because I am not ready to proclaim David Suzuki the greatest scientist since Newton or to bow down to a movie-making ex-politician. -
Blair promised a referendum on an EU constitution. The Lisbon Treaty is a constitution by any other name. EU gains more powers* out of this treaty and and a referendum would be soundly defeated. Labour MPs are likely to feel heat from their constituents over having a national vote. If not a referendum, then an election. I think Gordon is in for a rough patch. * http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...0/20/weu220.xml

Harper reloads with crime ultimatum

And we all suffer from the side effects of the Bureaucrat's Syndrome - that's where when anything goes wrong there is an automatic assumption that it's because there is too little regulation. The people in Ottawa still haven't figured out yet that bad guys don't register guns.
