wip: I am so glad you pointed out the very heavy subsidies enjoyed by the fossil fuel industry. I heard some stats somewhere on the subsidies per gallon, staggering. Giving them monopolistic status. There are a good many reasons to reduce dependance on fossil fuel, not limited to co2 alone, which would make the move beneficial, greatly beneficial, cleaner air, cleaner water, reduced dependance on foreign sources etc. etc. less war, damage to the environment oh the list goes on and on. -

eyeball: change begins with me and you. that is what I believe. You want change, live it. this is how we address the issues that need addressing. example: I rode my bike this year over 2400 hundred kilometers, and yet, I am a fence sitter when it comes to man made global warming. but even without co2, there are enough pollutants spewed from cars that is beneficial to drive less. I grow an organic garden why? because I reduce my exposure to endless toxic pesticides and herbicides I shop my local farmers market. why? the food is better/fresher, I am into supporting my neighbours, and when this foolish global economy falls to pieces, as it will, because by design it is stupidity, there will be someone around growing food that ain't in china. These are but a few of the things I chose to do why? because a government has mandated them? no. because, I feel these choices are beneficial to me, my family and to the society around me. -

eyeball .that is a bit of an unfair criticism. and I would not say it applies to all skeptics of the man made global warming scenario. I was not so long ago a man made global warming believer, but...... I don't quite know, oh yes, I heard interview, and looked at a paper written by someone.... the interviewer was from Global Research. It gave me second thoughts.... Then I did a bunch of reading on my own, and now I describe myself as a fence sitter, not believing implicity, as I had previously done. The focus on CO2 has pushed all other pollutant issues aside. This doesn't do us any good at all. Example look at how polluted our water is? (full of drugs, and worse) Why are we not addressing that issue? Look at the contamination in the food chain? Why are we not addressing that? Look at the issue of particulates in the air and other air pollutions? Why are we not addressing that? How about nuclear waste? and on and on and on -

Harper does NOT have to respond to public opinion. what a laugh! "The best he can do is make sure that nothing too damaging is done until the fad subsides." god the baloney of that statement..... Harper is responding to those higher up who wants the bogus controls in place to make money. cap and trade and carbon taxes/cards are all bogus excuses to extract more money from the common folk and exert more control. -

Plants do indeed love Co2 and thankfully so, for out benefit that is. Greenhouses growers love co2 because plants love co2. Carbon Dioxide In Greenhouses Also interesting in the news as of late..... Carbon dioxide found on extrasolar planet could lead to proof of extraterrestrial life seems carbon dioxide is associated with life, except strangely enough here. -
for this Christmas? with the economic news? I would say : Kinks: Father Christmas

Toyota Forecasts Its First Operating Loss in 71 Years
kuzadd replied to kuzadd's topic in The Rest of the World
which could be accounted for through funny bookkeeping? I am not so sure where you are going with this. what may have staved off falling sales a little longer for a comany such as toyota, was when gas prices got high, people bought the more fuel efficient cars which were the Japanes cars, but even that did not stop Toyota from a 1.7 billion dollar loss as reported. -

no I said, real trade, what passes as "free trade" is anything but. Real trade is not a utopian ideology What constitutes a better world, in your mind, does not constitute a better world in someone else's mind. We do not KNOW what is going to happen, we can only make a number of assumptions.... I appreciate the analogy, but it doesn't make any sense to what we are speaking of. Of the oil in that region is traded with another country, that is the choice and decision of the two countries involved, whom ever they may be. Forcing, invading and occupying another country for resources is plain old colonialism or imperialism, take your pick, but it is not trade. There are options and better ways to spend the money that is spent on war... spend it on alternative energy resources, it will have to be done anyway,,,,, so just do it, get on with it. By being less dependant you reduce the need for war as there is less competition for resources.... I know, it is such new and modern thinking and just makes plain sense. -

ok eyeball, gotcha. I agree we should question the motives of everyone who tells us anything. The difference being sadly some display partisanship, in questioning the motives, party partisanship. To say anyone would like to destroy the economy is if it is monolithic anyway......is silly What if it was being done to create another form of economy? Exercise control and austerity on the masses. It is plausible. But it is hard for those who have mind set, dictated by political party ideology to see more then one possibility. Anyone and everyone should be a war on terror skeptic, since it is a bunch of bullcrap anyway! I have issues with the whole man-made global warming scenario for a number of reasons. One: CO2 is exceptionally good for plants (check out how greenhouse growers use it to their advantage) Two: Water vapour is actually the number 1 green house gas Three: the means (cap and trade and carbon cards/taxes) to dealing with the problem are as cockamamie as the war on terror is in dealing with terrorism. It doesn't make sense. -

getting off track eyeball, but your are right on the economic theory. It is just that, theory, not science, and there are many many schools of economic theory, and there is no way to "prove" any of them. when you say this "It really IS all about motives isn't it?" would you clarify what you mean by this, I would really appreciate it. thanks oh and our economy is melting, I do agree on that. -

hey shady, I am not trying to equate toyota with GM et al other then to demonstrate that the carmakers world-wide are suffering, some worse, some less, but nonetheless all suffering. Last I had heard, Ford is not taking bail out at this time, they just want to know that it is there if needed. Ford: "A 'stand-by' line of credit, in the amount of up to $9 billion. This line of credit would be a back-stop to be used only if conditions worsen further." maybe they won't take any money, who knows? one thing that is sure, if people were buying/leasing cars as they had been (willing to incur debt) the automakers world-wide would be in an entirely different situation -
Go PM Harper! You didn't let me down, no sireee, I said you would do what any opportunistic politician would do, fill the seats ASAP, and you did! Full of cronies. So much for much ballyhooed reform, and taking the high road, and being more honourable then the liberals garbage. It's just more of the same. Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin?

sorry shady, the way I see the bailout it came from the top itself, Mr. Bush and his bankers and everyone fell in lock step. No one is more or less to blame, they all share equally -

actually I am correct. I don't give a pooop about collective emissions. Like Al Gores own energy bill being 20 times the average american household. 221,000 kilowat hours, more then 20 times the average american household. therefore despite your nonsensical spin, all individuals and households are not equal in there co2 emissions. Some use a great deal more and will continue to , cause they can, get it, yet?? never mind, knowing you , you never will. Olbermann on Gore's Energy Use: Setting the Record Straight -

actually the wealthy are more likely to emit more co2 then the poor, for the simple reason, they can get it? -

moderate american: Canada is not sitting on it's oil resource "until it is needed" by us. we are busily hemmorraghing our resource to america. " Who would you rather have influence on the flow of oil? ' how about the people to whom the resource belongs? and btw: I feel that way about Canada's oil too. I do not have a colonialist mindset. I think actual, real trade is the way to go. Or alternative energies to end dependance, are better ways to spend money -

I can keep it in mind, but they would not be tied to NA branches, they would be tied to the European arms those companies, still the Swedish government bailed the automakers out. Also Toyota is not connected to NA automakers. This type of news makes it clear the automaker problems are not limited to NA, and are in fact world-wide. -

Harper's Best Fiscal Stimulus Package: Cut Taxes
kuzadd replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Jerry I am not so sure that making home purchases tax deductible is the way to go. That was yet another factor in this most recent housing bubble (US) and may have been one reason that the Canadian market did not get so overheated and house prices so astronomically inflated. -
