The NDP are known for fiscal responsibility as a governing party and Bob Rae is the exception to the rule. A popular myth that the NDP is fiscally irresponsible doesn't make it true. http://albertatheory.blogspot.com/2009/09/...rudence-is.html What is interesting about this thread is when considering a loss of choice from the LPC, how much fiscal competence comes into the equation. Clearly from the discussion here, many people, more then half currently, have chosen to go to the CPC, which, if were put into todays election polls, would push the CPC to nearly 60% in support across Canada. Food for thought... yes.

Its phrases like this that gives me a kick out of reading the comments on MLW. Obviously there are a few of us on a similar wavelength on various issues, but neither Jerry or I have compared taxation to a vision of Marilyn Monroe standing over a pie chart.

MacKenzie has caught up with the Tommy Douglas NDP position on withdrawing from NATO. -
And more importantly. The Employment Insurance Fund has generated positive revenue surpluses since 1995 to the tune $56 Billion. Prior to that it was balanced in 1993. So, just because there is a short term recession, the EI payroll payments are going to be increased on a permanent basis, when we are already paying too much and should be receiving Payroll tax cuts on EI.

You make good points. Its very close to the Paul Martin Approach as finance minister. However, IIRC, Romanov had to clean up one of the worst fiscal messes in Canadian history and it was created by the Conservatives no less. On top of this there was the federal cuts in transfers. Sask was a basket case, and the piss poor government and destruction of the economy forced the Progressives Conservatives to run away from the Brand. We hear alot about the Ontario NDP RAE government, but it didn't hold a candle to the disaster of Devine. Romanovs approach was different to Douglas or Blakeneys or Lloyd, as they were able to create services and balance the books and Romanov was faced with cuts across the board. Could it have been done differently? For Certain. but in Ontario Mike Harris Cut services and sold off revenue generating assest to balance the books, only the books didn't balance. Both were hard line approaches, and both Provinces had fiscal troubles handed down from the Previous governments.

Bob Rae is where he belongs. Joining the other Failed NDP provincial leader who went to the Liberals.Successful NDP leaders remain with the NDP and have the best fiscal records and least corruption of any government. Tommy Douglas, Roy Romanov, Gary Doer, etc..... and soon to be successful Darrel Dexter (if everything I hear is accurate in those NS papers) Regardless, there is the CPC above which is what this poll is for.

Wildrose Alliance vies for second place

The Wild Rose has a long way to go ................. The Rhinos, I only read about, but the Yogic Flyers...I actually saw in action in Hamilton while I was in University. The Natural Law Party, was doing their presentation with Doug Henning, (who was the big draw), and they were showing how Natural Law creates health, security and defence. Yes defending Canada from ICBMs with positive thoughts. You have to believe or it won't work. But then they sat there with legs crossed. They took a room of negative and cynical people and said that before we left we would be filled with postive thougths. The room was too negative for their liking and they were going to change with natural law. Soon afterwards they were meditating and one or another would start to bounce on their butts. Then another and another and another until around 30 people on cushions were bouncing on their asses. The theory was they could meditate until being able to fly. People in the audience started laughing and couldn't stop. It was hilarious. It was hilarious disbelief. And sure enough all the negative cynical people left the lecture hall smiling and laughing. The Natural Law party didn't win any seats, but IIRC they were the party that financially profited the most from the Federal Election. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_Law_Party_of_Canada -

Jackboots and Stormtroopers.....

Sure enough. However, it just strikes me, that this is something I would expect if Communist China were holding the Olympics not British Columbia. Infact, I want to see displays of free speech and freedom in Canada while the olympics are in the country. Why must we behave like them. This appears to have little to do with security and bombsweeping techniques. -

Back to Back good posts. Both those posts above tend to sum up my perspective as well. -
Yeah, I kinda blew it a bit with the question and poll. Ok, so similar to August 1991.... but more rough around the edges. Answer the best you can.

In response to August 1991 poll on the Federal Left, I thought I might amuse us with a similar Federal Right poll.

NDP.... Sound fiscal management -
That's funny, I haven't heard anything so stupid since Paul Martin called an election and took his Majority inheritance called an election early to govern as a minority. Never heard such stupid stupid thinking. You have a majority, use it to your benefit and the country/Provinces benefit. Only the leader has changed not all the MPs, MLAs or Mpps etc. Calling an election in the climate is political suicide. Ask Ignatieff.

Just so I am clear on this. The NDP didn't trust the Harper government, and went as far as to work with the LPC t create a coalition government. The Prime Minister postpones a budget vote, then prorogues parliment, appoints some partisan Senators against the principles of the Reform/Alliance within their party. Not trusting the manuevering of the CPC the NDP suggests that they will oppose the budget, even before reading it, and that is because they do not trust the actions of the CPC government. The LPC say they are smarter then the NDP and will read the budget. Except they didn't and the "untrustworthy" (in the eyes of the NDP) CPC pulled a fast one as expected. I do not see how any of this makes any of the political parties mentioned look good. -

If one basis their analysis on fiscally sound government and balanced budgets, the NDP leads all parties in fiscal responsibility. If it is on Social policy, the LPC and NDP are closer... but then again that requires closer inspection. The Harris Conservatives ushered in Gay Marriage. The Davis Conservatives had more strength in their caucus for Gay spousal benefits then the other parties. A few years later, when the NDP found themselves in government, they put spousal benefits for Gays into a free vote instead of a whipped vote. Liberals during this same era moved closer to supporting Gays. Brian Mulroney was no more fiscally Conservative then Pierre Trudeau. Chretian is seen as governing left, with Martin representing the fiscal right. If you are to say that the Canadian Parties are left of the American Parties, you are correct to do so. US governments of the two main rightwing parties, don't balance the books. The US could use an NDP or a Reform party (As they recently had 15 years ago) to help create a third way or option. -

Well, I just found this guy. However, the people that would read him are more likely to be here and hard core NDP supporters, however, I would have to ask Punked to confirm that. So the far left is saying that the Conservatives are spending like drunken sailors and patting themselves on the back for doing so. And that each of these photo ops is in direct idealogical conflict with their value system, but that these are great for marketing the brand name on the back of the taxpayer. And quite frankly, most Conservatives agree with this analysis. Anything wrong with truth? -
