Should the constitution define 'just war'?
madmax replied to Machjo's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The last "just war" if there can be one, is considered to be WW2 and the destruction of Nazi Germany. One would be hard pressed to find a "Just War" before then and certainly none since then. However, few would argue there is such a thing as a Just War, thus how can you put that into a constitution? -
I have a few Wards in my city that are subject to regular B&Es and Auto Theft. The police create a zone and then spend their time in the wealthy areas where such B&Es and Auto Theft are significantly lower. They will respond to the wealthy districts and dispatch. But in the other regions, the police won't respond, and you get to go to the police station. We have plenty of police, but they spend alot of time elsewhere. Not that I am against having more, but if they aren't going to be doing their job in the hot spots, why bother.....?

That's not what Ignatieff said. Ignatieffs reasons were to put pressure on the NDP. Infact all his actions were more about dealing with the NDP, then dealing with the CPC or more importantly, dealing with current issues such as EI. End of the day, it has proven to be a short term tactical blunder that may well grow into a long term strategic failing. Its too early to tell, but the LPC have suffered the most.

Too little too late editorial from the Toronto Sun Get ready for TAX TSUNAMI
-
Your not from here so you have no idea just how screwed up the Province is. The deficit in Ontario will be structural. 48% decline in corporate tax revenues and amongst the lowest in North America. The Cuts to corporate taxes isn't a major factor in the decision to determine where to produce goods. Ontario has totally screwed over its entire manufacturing sector. Its a damn mess. What is gone is gone and will never come back.... ever. Tone deaf, and more in tune with listening to banks, and right wing media propoganda... that is preaching slogans to a choir, the real problem was ignored. Their worst tax revenue decline.. well DUH!!! John Deere got a huge tax break and have left... thousands of profitable operations which pay taxes have left. Not to avoid taxes, but to follow the trend of what the globalists want. The Ontario government, much like the Federal government are a bunch of patsies. The way out of this, is to TAX the person making low wages with the HST. It won't be enough. The Ontario Liberals are a bunch of idiots who we can't get rid of soon enough for the good of the Province. However, it will be too late if ever when this happens. They are likely to be voted in again. But we are dealing with a bunch of morons, elitists, and pigs at the trough.

Wildrose Alliance vies for second place
madmax replied to jdobbin's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
That was a great year for new parties. I don't have my original Natural Law Paper that I received in Hamilton. The policies are as per the wiki link, but they were in a weekly newprint format. Nicely drawn pictures of Yogic Flyers with positive thoughts bouncing through the air and creating the defensive shield... Priceless. Real Parties, Reform blew in from the west and the National party blew out. I like them both at the time. -
It's called pork. Throwing money on short term projects that will have little effect on the economy positive or negative. What it has done is fast tracked many pet projects sitting on city council desks. At the end of they day.... The Conservatives in government have not shown fiscal competence from 2006. They will be faced with similar revenue shortfalls in the upcoming years, regardless of the HST tax grab and they will see future deficits regardless of an end to the Pork projects of the present. The economic engine is in terrible shape. These guys are hopeless, disconnected and delusional. Ontarios government spends to much time in a glass house. Unfortuneately the public doesn't seem to care what they do, nor how badly, let alone pay for it.

Yes, they increased taxes at the bottom end. And are going to do so again with the HST. There seems to be little difference between the fiscal incompetence of the Ontario Liberals and the Federal Conservatives.

....... My friend sat in his fathers store after numerous late night burglaries. He waited with a rifle and when the thieves came in, he chased them out and followed them to their car just outside the front door. Oh yes they were scared. So.... He shot one of them... from behind.

The Right Honourable dude or the Right Honourable Day?Tough choice. Day is so flakey, I can't see the problem in replacing Day with a Dude who brings out the best in M.Dancer. -
Ontarios problems are deep and quite frankly near the point of no return. I just came from a very important meeting with Corporates Government and Colleges. The writing was on the wall since 2005 the direction that Industry wanted to go, or more importantly ... "WHERE" industry wanted to go. Profitable companies and good paying jobs left with the loving support of the Federal Government under Liberal and Conservative governance along with the complete apathy of a Provincial government living in a bubble of delusion. These bunch of suckers and losers are now reaping all the benefits of the policies they have sown. Community Colleges are lost on where to go next. Industry that remains here is suggesting the volumes of skilled trades and training will not sustain a future and there isn't the volumes of jobs to go to to support training courses. Yet, everyone recognised the way out of the mess is a strong industrial sector, everyone except the Provincial and Federal Government. These two governments are dreaming in technicolour. What was funny is that the Federal and Provincial governments will be able to sell their way out of the mess, but not steer their way out of it. Only a great optimist would dare suggest that Ontario is out of the recession. All accounts suggest that Ontario is going to tank alot further. Meanwhile, the Provincial government is heading towards early learning pre kindgarten, while having a massive $26 Billion deficit. Where are the BANKS??? Cheering the Province on Every borrowed dime.... just waiting for the interest payments to roll in. The McGuinty government is the WRONG government to deal with an industrial crises, let alone a recession. The crises existed 1st, the recession was just another inconvience along the way that unmasked the disgraceful policies of the Largest Industrial Province in Canada. It would be like Alberta ignoring Oil or BC ignoring Forestry and saying, we don't need this, we are going to retrain everyone and they will be health care providers, insurance salesman and financial consultants.....etc.

Union of the English Canadian Left
madmax replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I agree. However, it is unlikely to ever be a two party system in Canada. Look what happens in the Province of Alberta. There is some sort of talk of merging the NDP and the Alb Libs, and it goes nowhere in the end. But a 4th Party rises (Wild Rose) and appears to challenge the PCs. Meanwhile a party with potential committs suicide and becomes deregistered (green party). There is far too much regionalism in Canada and too many visions from Province to Province to secure a simple two party formula as is the bane of the US. Even diverse Provincial governments will implement the same policy, but it is who the people have confidence in that determine which party will do what is a right and HOW to do it. Obviously, you look on this poll and there is little reason to see a merger in the works, and until the NDP is erradicated or the Liberals have a Kim Campbell moment, there is going to be a least 4 parties in parliment for a long long time. -
Nova Scotia NDP end Union and Company Donations
madmax replied to madmax's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
That was Liberal Spinning, because the LPC had just done a decent level of fundraising this year as opposed to last year, when many times they were below the Federal NDP in Fundraising. However, the Federal NDP did hold off on picking the pockets of their provincial cousins in the regions which had elections, and in Ontario which had a Leadership Race as well as in Sask. Which pretty much shuts out Federal fundraising. However, the federal NDP are fiscally ready for an election campaign, but would much prefer one on their terms, rather then the LPC terms. (lucky for the NDP and the LPC there isn't an election). Looking on other sites, the NDP would not have had the bodies in place in 308 ridings to run a good campaign, with or without money. Reading some blog sites comparing candidate readiness, the LPC were ready in many, the NDP no so ready. That is quickly changing, along with the CPC. The NDP have the funds, or access to the funds (LOANS), based upon their ability to raise and their assests. The LPC have a decent war chest now, along with some strong riding associations, and the CPC is the election machine. Completely false. That's correct. -

Certainly, there could be a "Last Party Standing" mentality. What I do see from the two polls running concurrently here on MLW, is that there is 80% against a merger of the left in this poll with only 20 support for a merger. However, there is over 50% support of Liberals moving to the Conservatives if there was no Liberal Party to vote for. Interesting.... -
Where there is smoke there is fire. I don't hear alot about the Prairie Provinces. Sask is rarely in Ontario News all we saw here was the bottomline, not how they got there. Which is why the topic I was responding to was fiscal management, and not equality of service. I leave the final vilification of Devine with these guys....

OTOH have we got Brian Mulroney to pay back that money he got from the Federal Government for merely slurring his good name. How much was that????

The day you are prepared to spend 2 years in jail, have your name turned to mud and know that it was 100% the error of the government, is the day I want to see when you say you would not want compensation for your troubles. Good lord, Business receives compensation when the government tears up a sidewalk.
