These posters are of liberal or radical (Left) persuasions:BUffycat; Figleaf; Higgly; Jdobbin; JBG; Who's Doing What; Blackdog;and many others I can't think of now There are plenty of non-Conservatives here. You are pretty hard on yourself.

I agree with that. They called off working and decided it's time to get a jump on the campaign. I think it is easy to go around and offer ridings money, especially when it's their money. Total feel good exercise. I believe that in many ridings this tactic is effective.

Cdn attitudes toward the opposition parties
madmax replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Bob Rae isn't a factor Federally today in Ontario. While he was in power, he definitely aided the cause in the failure of the Federal Party in Ontario. I believe every NDP seat was lost. Bob Rae is comfortably playing possum in the Liberal Party. Perhaps he will get his opportunity to do for the Liberals what he did to the NDP. Ed Broadbent was popular, but the Liberal Brand, and their ability to be a chamelon and change policy and principle on the fly, were able to do what they have always done. Keep seats of contention away from the NDP. -
Cdn attitudes toward the opposition parties
madmax replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The NDP has neither the support or the base across Canada to become the ruling party. What it can do, when given the opportunity is provide an effective opposition. A position that the Liberals do poorly for two reasons. 1) they are more interested in finding ways back to power then being a critic of the government or serving the needs of the populace. 2) Many times the current government policy is the same as the Liberals when they were in power and it is their programs and decisions that they must critise and critique. A difficult task to do without being hypocritical. (Think of Afghanistan or Kyoto) With the Reform Party Gone, the NDP does have the ability to provide a watchful eye, like it has done previously and popularly under Ed Broadbent. Rather than trying to believe that the NDP can form the next government, I see the possibility of the CPC and NDP carving up Quebec away from the BQ. Whether it happens or not, it is the thought that counts, as I have little use for separatists, or the pretend separatists who get elected under the BQ banner only to collect the Federal Cheque from the rest of the country. -
The Environment is not a one issue endeavour. The dangers of Nuclear Power have not changed since the 50s. There have been a number of close calls, and a couple disasters. 3 Mile Island is still a contained mess. Chernobyl exposed the dangers of careless shutdowns and windups IIRC, and the Nuclear Waste is an environmental hazard with no known solution. Nuclear Power is expensive, and unlike the past, todays cost overruns in trying to create a nuclear power plant are astronomical, and they get higher from there. Safer Energy is possible. While there has been an acceptance in Nuclear Power in Ontario, I don't believe it every actually became cost effective. Infact in Ontario we are still paying for it today, and get taxed on it twice. Nuclear Power, if it were cost effective and provided an economic advantage, then it would be the power of choice for all private energy companies. The only time Energy Companies would be interested in providing Nuclear Power, would be if the Government, hence US foot the bill for them, and they get the profits. However, I am interested in hearing more about it, and other sources of energy as I am no expert.

The thread you started is about No Fly lists. You have to spin it into something else in order to try to make the idea palletable to others. Most of the people in these forums are Conservatives. The Minority are Liberals and then some others of various persuasions. Those who have Conservative leanings and those with Liberal leanings have not bought into your position of no fly lists. Your personal statements in this thread are radical and provocative. You are in the minority position in this thread amongst known Conservatives and Liberals and infact you are alone. What I have read up to this post, the only thing you could hang your hat on, is that the government position supports your view. Perhaps this lone fact, may draw out more of those on the right to jump in and support your position. But I would say your posts, because of their nature have kept possible supporters away. You could have better put forth an argument for No Fly lists and why you want them. However, after being grilled by those on the "right" they have pushed you to state a position that you too think No fly lists are ineffective, and are merely a control mechanism for "outrage" "howls" vs an effective tool against terrorism.

Huh?? It's not legalness that I have a problem with... I'm sure it would pass a Charter challenge (unless of course, one could prove it was essientially impossible to leave Canada). It's common sense. It will never do absolutely anything! Ever! Terrorists don't use their real names. Just kidding with you. I am in agreement with your current and prior posts. Don't let common sense influence you too much

How did John Williams end up on it? I did hear it took him 6 weeks to fix. IS this true? I can understand why Pat Martin was on it. Actually I can't, why were these guys Blacklisted?

Your probably not on the right either. At least you know something about economics. This legal stuff appears out of your league. .

For those of us in the Center, I don't think anyone takes your comments seriously. But you're not in the center. I don't take your comments above seriously either. And I don't think you are on the right. I think people on the right, cringe when you post, but there are some separatists that I find are often agreeing with you.

Conservative Party Sponsors Race Car
madmax replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
When you are involved in motorsport, the trick is to find someone interested enough to pay for your ride. The oldest adage of how to have a million dollars racing, is to start out with 10 million dollars. I think any stock car racer who gets someone to pay for their ride in Canada deserves it. There will always be complainers that the CPC has too much money, or have blown their hard earned donation to something that is split between east/west and they have no interest in. I would like to see all parties involved in motorsport. But that is because I race. I do have a personel bias. For those worried about, oh, what if they lose, or what if they crash, probably is neither a spectator or isn't into the motorsport racing scene. If you don't race, you won't crash. Nor will you win. If you think its better to sit in the stands and have no one to cheer for vs, say a CPC car, well, it just isn't so. Or more importantly, for those who don't like the CPC, they will have a car to boo, and hope it loses. But really, it is about a driver, trying to make a living in a competitive sport that costs alot more to participate in then there are monetary rewards. People complain to much. Go to the track, and enjoy. And stop worrying about the beer stereotypes. I have been too close to many brawls in the CFL stands or the NHL stands to worry about the nonsense spoken here. Do I think it is wise for the CPC to sponsor a car. I don't really know if it's wise or not because I support racers -
Atlantic Accord - Who will stand up for Ontario?
madmax replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I really don't know how much I could put into anything McGuinty Says. Changes with the wind, and his promises are never fullfilled. When he stands up to defend something, it is for his political benefit, not a Provincial Benefit. Perhaps that is why I don't trust a word out of his mouth, and you would be wise not to either. -
And Canada is entitled to pick and choose who lives here, Are you saying that someone born in Canada can be deported to another country even if they have no citizenship in any other country. There is no country willing to take him in, and the citizen doesn't wish to leave in the first place? Pick and choose your way through that.

That may be correct. But I have to wonder, about the charge, and the age of the offender and the jurisdiction. I am no lawyer of anykind, and I can't see something coming of this. If the US were successful in convicting him, then there would have been possibility of transfer to a Canadian Prison. Now, with everything up in the air, it does leave alot of serious questions to be addressed.

Very good post. Hard to believe we were writing at the same time. I share your concerns above.

Austrailian and British Governments have demanded that detainees of their countries be returned and the US government has complied. Many of these people chose to join the Taliban/Pakistani Muj, on their own accord. Khadr was born in Canada, and unfortuneately like the rest of this Brothers and Sisters, heavily influenced by his fathers misguided decision to blurr the line between Islamic Humanitarian Aid and directly supporting Terrorist causes in the name of Islam. Young Khadr was a kid then for S(*Ts sake. That doesn't change the activities he participated in, and it doesn't lessen the fact that as he shot and killed, so was he shot and captured, while others he was with had been ambushed and killed. He is now 20 years old IIRC and I have every reason to believe the treatment at Guantanamo has been ineffective and counter productive to a situation that wasn't good to begin with. At 20 years of Age he isn't the boy he was. But he is a Canadian Citizen, and my guess is that the weakness of our Prime Ministers, have allowed an impressionable boy to have missed a opportunity to right a wrong done to him by his father, that neither he or many in his family can understand. Yeah, Harper can be tough and say, yup kid, you need to stay there till you rot. You terrorist you. I have reason to believe that there could be a great possibility he could be ready to rejoin a group and pick up arms again. But I also have reason to believe that had our government intercepted this young boy early on, grown a set of balls and stuck up for the chance to help him and find out whats going on in his head, there is good reason to believe that the possibility of success would be greater then keeping a kid in a questionable military prison. You two guys can take great pleasure in kicking this kid, but I have to wonder, how long is the US going to keep him. What is going to happen if Guantanamo is shut down, and just what if the US releases him, and since you say not here then WHERE??? You are probably stupid enough to say Pakistan. They will take good care of him!!!! Idiots. You know, there are many things to consider in regards to repatriating Khadr. This is good reason to believe in such a request being premature. But quite frankly, if the US chose to send him here, we would have to deal with the problems immediately. So, they better get off there butts and get ready for such a possibility. But it has nothing to do with ScottSA retarded Title.

An open letter to Prime Minister Harper
madmax replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
At no such time is any such nonsense implied or agreed with. He doesn't say he agrees with the "Harper" approach, nor would I gather he would have any idea what the "Harper" approach is to GHG. Harpers approach is one of intensity targets, which increases emmissions and does not reduce them. -
Now that is a Scary Thought! No he is a politician. Calvert should be wise enough to realize that Harpers word means nothing. Think of how he put his stamp on things within the first week. That should have sent the alarm bells off and that all bets were off regarding integrity and this government. Pretty sad, considering that is what they hung their hat on to get elected.
