Ontarians favor one public school board
Posit replied to myata's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
The Separate School Board IS a public school board with a different stream. It is in essence no different than the protestant public schools, the French immersion school system, or the disable school programmes. One does not need to be Catholic to attend a Separate School, so it is not aligned based on religious affiliation. There is nothing wrong with having options in the public education system. -

"....I have just proven that God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, etc. are liars and sinners?" No. You have just proven that you can't read the Bible. You read it face value and the underlying message escapes you. Christianity isn't what the New Testament is about. It is what people like you interpreted to be. I vote with others that you are a bitter divorcee and suspect that your wife probably went with someone else because you were a little short in the "manhood" department. Perhaps if YOU had acted a little more like a whore and a lot less like an inverted testicular bumpkin you might still be married. I prove what Jesus was about everyday. Miracles abound me. Too bad you have only yourself and faith in your minuscule thinking process to rely upon now.... -

PROOF! Jesus wasn't a "Christian"! The religion was created AFTER he was murdered. If you count yourself a "Christian", then you are a living lie! PROOF! If you were a follower of Jesus' teachings, you wouldn't need (or use) a sanctimonious rant to condemn people because of your sins. The Bible was written by Judaic scholars and edited by imperialist nobles and aristocrats. If you "believe" what the Bible has to offer without putting it into practice, then you truly don't have a clue..... James 2:1-26 "My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." -

You missed the point. Native children are the SAME as non-native children and should be afforded the same protection, for sure. However, you have implied that all natives are abusers, or that at least they are more frequent abusers. Guyser was showing you different. And to further his point statistically we have more abusers in our society than they do in theirs. Native children are removed from their homes and communities in far greater proportions than us settlers' children. Not because of abuse but because of poverty. Poverty is not legal grounds for removing children, according to the UN Children's Bill of Rights. It is another continuing form of genocide and fits with the UN definition of what constitutes genocide. BTW I would suggest that you change your vocabulary. You cannot discriminate against or victimize a corporation. So your rant is epithetic. -

Parental neglect and child abuse? Society is plagued with single mothers either on welfare or working at Mcjobs trying to keep up. Where two parent families earn modest incomes they are so often working and enjoying their wealthy toys there is very little left for their latch-key kids. In comparison most First Nations (as in many small towns) there is still a semblance of a community and kids are often protected and nurtured by friends and family. In comparison native kids are raised with more nurturing than non-native kids. Unfortunately since native kids are often raised differently, our book-educated social workers (with very little social skills) are quick to pull them out and ship them off. They are still perpetuating genocide much like the thinking behind residential schools. In reality nearly 90% of our society suffers from some sort of mania, phobia, OCD or substance abuse (John Bradshaw PhD). Amidst all that "ism" some of us can raise our children to be respectful and decent human beings. Part of removing the "ism" from First Nations is allowing children to be raised in a more traditional setting, promoting traditional values and eating traditional foods towards better health. Yet it is our colonial influences - the alcohol, residential schools, sexual deviancy etc. that hold the legacy over First Nations. Prior to contact none of these things existed in native society. Our colonial forefathers came here seeking refuge from oppression and abuse and in turn imposed the same sickness upon First Nations that they fled from. I would suggest that YOU should be concerned about the welfare or YOUR children, since from where I sit it is likely that one of them (or someone in your family) will end up murdering someone, another will abuse sexually a child and another is likely to end up in a life of crime. Statistically, First Nation people have a greater chance of "success" within the definition of their culture than anyone in mainstream society. -
Apparently, from the responses on this forum there are still far too many that would want to put their blinders on and ignore the law and facts of law. It doesn't present much hope in terms of the archaic bigoted thinking still hiding behind political politeness.

Yes you are in a position of privilege. Being attached to colonial anglo-saxons as a Canadian citizen you have unfetter access to lands and resources to which our government has stolen, or willfully manipulated the dispossession from native peoples AND the government protects your interests in those lands and resources by continuing to ignore the treaties over many of them. They also ignore the Charter of Rights and Freedoms when they encourage you to buy up, and develop lands and resources without also consulting and accommodating First Nations' concerns, issues and rights over the lands. And lastly when it comes time to settle outstanding claims and issues the government protect the illegal occupation of those lands your house and business occupy and instead offer a mere pittance of the actual fair market value of the land. Yes she would be much better off and have a "better life" living in her own community raised by her family, or by members of her community in comparison to outsiders. Your sister cannot offer the child culture and language with the same understanding and commitment as her community or family might, nor can she instill indigenous world view thinking. Statistically there are more babies and young children removed from native communities than all the children stolen away to residential schools. The UN definition of genocide includes the removing of children from their cultural origins. Just one more fine example to show that Canada is still engaged in the genocide of aboriginals. 2007 no less...... -

Betsy, Band governments are branches of the federal government. The corruption comes from that institution. Some recent examples: RCMP nepotism and financial mismanagement Ad scam Jane Stewart's missing Employment Insurance funds Brian Mulroney's Air Buses There are plenty examples of political and financial corruption at all levels of government. I would suggest that if you were to focus your attention at the top the bottom and less significant entities would correct themselves. -
Reclamations or "estopping" is a legal remedy under the law. The occupation of Ipperwash, Caldedonia, Deseronto, or any other land under dispute is not "illegal". It is perfectly legal and effective.

Linden is a Judge, appointed in Ontario to rule on cases of law, and was appointed as a Justice Commissioner to hold this Legal Public Inquiry into the murder and events surrounding the death of Dudley George. What? Don't you believe in the "rule of law"? Of I forgot. That is only for natives and you are exempt! Get with the Canadian program son. You are sounding like an American backwoods hick.
-
Ah, But they did mention that Dudley George had a responsibility and a right to occupy the lands since all other avenues of revering the illegal act of expropriation failed. Like Justice Linden said in the report, few people really understand the relationship First Nations have with the Crown. "We are all treaty people." Which he further clarifies as saying that Ontarians have a legal obligation to comply with the treaty and aboriginal rights of First Nations, since we have continued to benefit from the treaties by the occupation of aboriginal lands. We also have the legal obligation of settling the lands claims - especially since many of the treaties have not been upheld by our government. Also according to Justice Linden, Treaties are not archaic documents. They are living documents that are as applicable today as they were when they were written. Protection of the treaties have been entrenched in the Charter for our and native protection. Dudley George, and those who occupy treaty lands to halt development or expropriation are justified in their actions. The "rule of law" includes treaties and utmost the treaty aboriginal rights trump most other law in Canada - this from the perspective of Justice Linden.

The Ipperwash Inquiry Report was released: Ipperwash Report Some of the Commissioner's Statements: Premier Harris and Chris Hodgson made racist statements "I HAVE FOUND THAT BOTH THE FORMER PREMIER AND MINISTER OF NATURAL RESOURCES MADE RACIST COMMENTS, IN WHAT HAS BECOME KNOWN AS “THE DINING ROOM MEETING”, ALTHOUGH BOTH DENIED MAKING THESE OFFENSIVE COMMENTS." Premier Harris created a barrier to peaceful negotiation "NOTWITHSTANDING THE GOVERNMENT’S AUTHORITY TO ESTABLISH POLICY, INCLUDING POLICING POLICY, THESE COMMENTS AND THE SPEED AT WHICH THE PREMIER WISHED TO END THE OCCUPATION CREATED AN ATMOSPHERE THAT UNDULY NARROWED THE SCOPE OF THE GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE TO THE OCCUPATION. THE PREMIER’S DESIRE TO SEEK A QUICK RESOLUTION CLOSED OFF OTHER OPTIONS ENDORSED BY CIVIL SERVANTS, INCLUDING PROCESS NEGOTIATIONS, THE APPOINTMENT OF MEDIATORS AND THE OPENING UP OF COMMUNICATION WITH FIRST NATION PEOPLE, THEREBY CREATING A BARRIER TO PEACEFUL RESOLUTION." Harris & Charles Harnick lied in the legislature THE FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL MISLED THE LEGISLATURE ABOUT THE DINING-ROOM MEETING AND THE PREMIER DID NOT VOLUNTEER THIS INFORMATION, WITH THE RESULT THAT IT TOOK A PUBLIC INQUIRY FOR THE PUBLIC TO LEARN THE DETAILS OF THIS KEY EVENT. Racism is systemic throughout the OPP "CULTURAL INSENSITIVITY AND RACISM ON THE PART OF SOME OF THE OPP OFFICERS INVOLVED WERE EVIDENT BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER DUDLEY GEORGE’S DEATH AND CREATED A BARRIER TO ESTABLISHING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND TO DEVELOPING A LEVEL OF TRUST WITH THE OCCUPIERS WHICH IN TURN, MADE A TIMELY, PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF THE OCCUPATION MORE DIFFICULT. RACIST COMMENTS WERE MADE BY OPP INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS AGAINST THE ABORIGINAL PEOPLE WHO WERE UNDER SURVEILLANCE AT THE TIME. THESE COMMENTS WERE ALSO RACIST AGAINST PERSONS OF COLOUR. IT IS FUNDAMENTAL THAT POLICE OFFICERS INVOLVED IN INTELLIGENCE ARE IMPARTIAL AND FREE OF BIAS AS THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROCESSING AND FILTERING SENSITIVE AND CRITICAL INFORMATION." "THE RACIST COMMENTS OF THE INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS WERE NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT; THERE WERE A NUMBER OF OTHER TAPE-RECORDED CONVERSATIONS OF VARIOUS OFFICERS MAKING DEROGATORY REMARKS ABOUT ABORIGINAL PEOPLE AT THE TIME OF THE OCCUPATION." "THE OPP’S RESPONSE TO THESE INCIDENTS WAS INSUFFICIENT." Kenneth Deane shot and killed Dudley George "THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT OPP ACTING SERGEANT DEANE SHOT AND KILLED MR. GEORGE AND NOTHING IN THIS INQUIRY CHALLENGES OR UNDERMINES THIS CONVICTION. HOWEVER, ACTING SERGEANT DEANE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN IN A POSITION TO SHOOT MR. GEORGE IN THE FIRST PLACE." Canada, the provinces and developers must consult and accomodate First Nations where there may be an impact on their treaty rights. "THE SUPREME COURT OF CANADA RECENTLY CLARIFIED THE MEANING OF ABORIGINAL AND TREATY RIGHTS, RECOGNIZED AND AFFIRMED IN THE CONSTITUTION OF CANADA. IN THREE RECENT CASES, THE COURT CONFIRMED THE PRINCIPLE OF THE “HONOUR OF THE CROWN” AND THE DUTY OF THE GOVERNMENT TO CONSULT ABORIGINAL PEOPLES AND ACCOMMODATE THEIR INTERESTS WHEN CONTEMPLATING ANY ACTION THAT MIGHT HAVE AN IMPACT ON ABORIGINAL OR TREATY RIGHTS." There does not appear to be any comment in the report or media release that condemns Dudley George or implies that he played a part in his own death. Vindicated at last. Rest in Peace Dudley George.

In the 305 replies to the article at the Globe to the minimum discussion here, few people get the point. It isn't that one youth put up a sign that was derogatory and racist. It is that there is an environment that exists in that store / coffee shop that would have people think this is funny. You can bet that there are more than one at that store that were involved, since few people laugh alone (and those that do end up in white straight jackets). This employee had the unfortunate demise of taking the heat for the rest of them. And why is it important to call for a boycott? A clear message must be sent to the corporation (and to which the corporation must respond positively) that these kinds of things will not be tolerated in society today. The only way for this to happen is to pinch the company a bit and see if they will do more then provide a 15 minute video in the back room telling how bad it is to put up racist signs. If Tim Hortons wants to avoid such a counter action then I would suggest that they implement a country wide program of anti-racism training. Racism lies just beneath the surface in Canada and unless we are outraged at even the most minor of expositions, we simply allow it to fester. -
Can manufacturers compete if based in Canada?
Posit replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Why would anyone do that? The Big 3 put their investors ahead of their customers and their products. They have no concern for us so why should we care about them? They "Buy the car your neighbour makes..." was a flop. As to other products, I prefer to spend my money on local products made by local artisans and manufacturers. If a corporation owns the business I refuse to buy. That IMO, is the way to bring corporations to their knees and boost the local economies at the same time. The minute anyone walks into a WalMart they have helped destroy the local economy. -

Posit replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Not true IMO. Western corporations depend on poor countries to produce cheap goods to maximize profits. In order to maintain the balance of high income earners earning high profits, they must take from the bottom. It really is a matter of inputting cheap labour in exchange for high profits. As well, since the west over produces it must find more markets in order to sell those cheapply produced goods in order for the investors to skim the cream off the top. If companies fail to exploit new markets then investors pull out and the company goes down the tubes,, demanding that it exploit the workers for cheaper production costs. The only way to sustain such crazy business practice is to either reduce the investment profit returns taken out of the system by the rich, or by retuning to balanced capitalism where the employees are also considered to be consumers and treated as the only important focus of the business. -

"The problem is, it is not sustainable. We need to change the way we do business … We need to change our priorities and adjust our values." Business success, he said, should no longer be measured on growth alone and must produce benefit for society and the planet." "Our capitalist model has given us tremendous things," Trudeau said. "But the time has come for us to look at it critically and try to improve on it, given the accelerated pace of change and the fact that we have limited space." Justin Trudeau. -
The problem with having the largest and most powerful armed forces in the world is that they must be exercised constantly and only real armed conflict can determine them to be the best. The US uses its military to advance corporatism in the world. The corporations require newer undeveloped markets for the overproduction of goods and must colonize weaker nations.

Exactly! Why would one want to think freely when they could have corporatists think for them?

If the OPP came down with a heavy hand there is no doubt in my mind that it would make Oka look like a carvnival. When the OPP tried the same thing at Caledonia using 100 OPP to arrest 15 protestors, within a matter of minutes another 150 protesters swarmed the site. The same thing or worse would happen at Deseronto, I'm sure. Negotiation is the only way to resolve these things but it looks poorly on the OPP that they didn't keep their promise. The bail court judge even told the OPP "to get their stories straight" since the promise not to charge anyone in exchange for taking down the barricade was reneged. There is a good possibility that Shawn Brant will walk when (and if) his minor charges ever get to court. Although, charging Shawn Brant will do little in curbing the protests and blockades and will likely make them more frequent. Shawn is only the spoke person for about 350 people who decided they would take over the quarry and block the railway. They'll just find another spokesperson, ,I'm sure...... -

They can't sell the land. They can only surrender it to the Crown. And with land scarce at Tyendinaga, it will never be surrendered. That is the whole point of this protest - to get the land back. And sure enough from what I have heard from the community liaison the negotiators are discussing what will happen to us residents WHEN the land is returned...not if..... -

You do realize that this type of thing is the fuel that will cause MORE protests and blockades? If the protesters are not afraid of the OPP or the criminal charges do you think that they are afraid of some bogus law suit that will never see the light of day? You see Shawn is a proud member of OCAP and lives in poverty.....I would be interest in seeing how anyone can get anything from someone with nothing to lose.... -

"...vigilantes out on a cash grab...." WTF? The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte have already passed over $60 million for the lands in question. They continue to state that they are not interested in money. They want the land back free and clear because it was never given up. The Culbertson Tract will consume 50% of the Town of Deseronto and essentially land lock it surrounded by reserve. Another section to the north that is under claim will basically cause Deseronto to be absorbed into the reserve.
