  1. I'm a Habs fan. It can be argued that a coach does have something to do with PR, because he does interviews, though I doubt it's in the actual job description. If that's the case, then you would think John Tortorella would not have a coaching job given his history of cussing at the media. But all that aside, I know that the Habs hire bilingual coaches. It has worked that way for a while now. For years the coaches have been bilingual, and for the past couple decades they have all been native french speakers first. Owner, Geoff Molson, has even said he understands this and that he will look for another coach in the offseason. The argument about whether the Habs should care about what languages the coach speaks, is one thing. But the Habs are struggling right now. I think it's a safe bet that this is probably the end for the current management team. For better or for worse, the coach is often the first one canned. It is usually some sort of last ditch move. So they fired coach Jacques Martin. It was a bit of a knee-jerk firing perhaps, because he was told on a game day not long before game time. (There are rumors that Pierre Gauthier was not very classy about the firing either.) They promoted the current assistant coach as an interim coach. Anyway, the Habs might end up being a seller this year at the trade deadline, and if management is on its way out, I could see why they might not want to ink another coaching contract right now. Better to do that in the offseason, when you have more time to screen candidates and select the proper guy. And maybe one of the prospects they would like is not available right now. Randy Cunneyworth has the wonderful job right now of being coach of a team with rabid fans while the current ship is sinking. Now he has to face this controversy, as well. He is appointed to that job for a short amount of time. Someone else will take over when the smoke clears.
  2. Nobody here thinks less of you because you do not celebrate Christmas, Cybercoma. OK
  3. But for some, there is also a certain joy in being ribbed about the ways we are abnormal, given it does not go too far. Also, given the types of responses coming from the poster in question, I think he gets it. To be clear, I don't think anyone is saying you need to celebrate holidays to be happy. I am one of those people who could care less about a tree, or what day of the week it is, and I tend to forget birthdays, Valentine's etc, all of which, you can imagine, makes me a hit with the ladies. I like Christmas, if only because it is a holiday people have in common, so that allows for a meal with my brothers.
  4. Maybe in some cases people have to toughen up a bit, but there situations that are a lot worse than what you describe here, and when you have multiple kids (not just the stereotypical bully) picking on one kid who has "I wish I was dead" scrawled all over her notebooks, there may be grounds for intervention.
  5. I really don't think anyone meant those comments with hurtful intent. I suppose there is always a risk that some people can take them that way, and it is good of you to be concerned, but I don't people are seriously criticizing this person's choices. I get the sense Weber is just joking around, for instance.
  6. He took criticism for hyperbole, decided the poster had a point, and did what the "bigger person" does. Not many posters on either side of the spectrum here show this kind of maturity.
  7. Yes, you have reigned victorious here. Why do you even bother with us losers, though? There are millions of karaoke bars out there where people are probably now desecrating the work of the holy. This cannot continue. Get to work!
  8. It seems to me that what Scotty did here was he related a story and then stated that the aforementioned anecdote is a reason why he, personally, does not support state-funded daycare. What I do not see is where he told anyone what electoral decisions to make. Maybe I missed something. Perhaps you could point it out.
  9. The Beatles wrote songs that a lot of people enjoy. I am not a big fan myself. So I could care less about desecrating their music. But I realize a lot of people do like them. A lot of people enjoying the Beatles means that probably a lot of people like to sing their songs as well. Most of them are not looking for a professional music career. They are just having fun. My guess is that John Lennon would probably not be a Harper supporter, politically. Likewise, Harper might not subscribe to the political opinions of John Lennon. No matter though. A difference in political opinion does not stop a conservative politician from enjoying the art work of a more left wing musician. By the same token, when John Lennon and co. decided upon a life of making popular music, they entered a business where success is dependent upon fan base. Fans are not required to subscribe to all Lennon's opinions if they want to enjoy his music and sing a song. Also, they are not required to have amazing vocal talents when they sing along with their car radios. I have to wonder are you really serious about this. I mean are you this upset that he sang a Beatles song. And as for his talent. Who cares? I don't think he is trying to promote his musical career. Do you have a similar reaction when a left-wing minded person quotes Jack Kerouac, who was a conservative?
  10. I'll say. Freaky that they would even state something like this publicly. World has turned on its own for a long time without any help from humans. The sun rises and sets. And the weather seems fully able to take care of itself, too. I like this system so far.
  11. And then this one was ruined in the early 80's in a pop song called Midnight Blue, but, if you can forget that song exists, the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 8th piano sonata is still great.
  12. For some reason the overture from Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks always makes me think of Canada. Gigantic, wide open, glorious and free. Especially in the opening part where it is slower. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_6GYZ2jY1o
  13. I am a Habs fan, but I really wanted the Oilers to win that year. Nothing against the Canes, they were a great team. But the Oilers went in to the playoffs in 8th spot in the west. It was a Cinderella story in the making. All the way to game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals. One win a way from a very memorable sports moment. The sound of the crowd at those games, the way they all sang Oh Canada before each match. Pretty inspiring hockey fans.
  14. It is not a relevant question. What is your social insurance number and which hand do you write with?
  15. You are demonizing someone for not going along with the group. That he is a scab is enough for you to hate him. You have your groupthink stance, and you and Weber have both shown you wish violence on such people based upon that ideology. Some brotherhood!
  16. Someone who wants to work because they need to make money, and is happy to do so for less than others, does not deserve scorn. I've known people who worked for a private company who were called into do snow removal during a terrible storm when city employees were on strike. Those guys were harrassed by people with bats, all because they were trying to make a living. They have just as much right to it as anyone else. They also kept the roads clean. Imagine if one of those bat-waver's kids had a medical emergency. They'd be glad someone kept the roads clean for less money, with less manpower, doing a better job in less time.
  17. I don't have a favourite. But there's certain ones I never tire of. Here's one I love on the mp3 player while I walk. The 1st movement of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 5. It's long, so the whole movement is separated into two youtube clips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLi4QGRwOPc&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsHE7u6gUbo&feature=related
  18. I don't think I did complain. All I am saying is that the issue has nothing to do with freedom of expression or association, and these things have no place in this argument.
  19. I was just pointing out that natural rights like freedom of expression and association are not dependent upon having monetary support. They are irrelevant. You can still express yourself and associate with whom you choose, whether or not your employer supports you.
  20. From what I hear, 127 Hours deserves to win for realism. People have told me that it felt like it took 127 hours to watch it.
  21. I don't know the details of the situation you are relating here. But if somebody said something like that to me, I wouldn't take it very seriously. I happen to be a hockey fan, though. To me it seems reasonable that someone could jokingly say "What kind of Canadian are you, you dont like hockey?"
