I've been hearing a bit lately about the Toronto Star and its fortunes, or lack there of, is there any chance that our 'favourite red rag' could be having problems. Without the Star, he suggested, the Liberals didn't win elections. "The Toronto Star is it," said the Rainmaker. "We need that newspaper." I thought of that, this week, as news spread about the simultaneous "resignations" of the Star's publisher, Michael Goldbloom, and its editor-in-chief, Giles Gherson. To some in Central Canada, it was a sensation: political and media folks started to blizzard each other with emails and hushed phone calls. "Can you believe it?" said one. Well, yes, actually, we can. The fact is this: Contrary to Senator Davey's view, no one really "needs" the Toronto Star anymore. They haven't for some time. Reporters and editors would prefer that honours such as the National Newspaper Awards determine which papers succeed. They would understandably like editorial content to matter most. But, as with any other business, the bottom line ultimately determines who lives to see another day, and who does not. For quite some time, the bottom line at the Toronto Star has been awful. A recent report prepared by media analysts at BMO Nesbitt Burns tells the real story, and it is not a happy one. "Revenues [and earnings] all came in below expectations," when second-quarter 2006 results were analyzed," declared the report. "Once again, the underperformance was attributable to disappointing newspaper results ... the near-term outlook remains uninspiring." The outlook for the various newspapers owned by the Toronto Star, and the Star itself, "remains unclear. [A plan] for near-term capital gains is elusive."

I don't see the legitimate complaint. Do you think the government has the right to tell you that you MUST do business with someone? I don't. These hospitals are not restricted to RC's only and they don't refuse to use medications or procedures having anything to do with non-RC's, and neither do they segregate people by religion. How exactly does this fit in with a model of multiculturalism and tolerance. Segregating groups and facilities opens the door to for other forms of apartheid; will there be a call for a special hospital for people who don't like abortions or don't like hospital which provide birth control. Private non profit making: hospital employers in private non profit hospitals are represented by the ‘Nederlandse Zorgfederatie’ (NZF), which covers almost 100% of the hospitals (intramural care). Employees in private non profit making hospitals are represented by the same 3 national (general) trade unions as the public sector. In this sector the government is not a partner in negotiations. The government fixes annually the hospital budget which thus indirectly influences the liberty of the social partners to negotiate.

The allegation comes after he was fined by the party for an earlier breach. The Career Foundation, a non-profit charity funded by Ottawa, rounded up clients to work for the Eglinton-Lawrence MP prior to the recent "Super Weekend" delegate vote. In early October, it issued cheques totalling $2,687.50 to seven clients. Volpe spokesperson Corey Hobbs says the campaign always intended to pay: "There was a clear and legal plan in place that we would be paying these people for their services ... There is an invoice that is being processed right now." Three managers at the charity, in Volpe's riding and formerly within his purview as a federal cabinet minister, formally complained to executive director Colin Morrison about the assignment. They argued they weren't a recruitment centre, that it was unethical for a non-profit to be involved in partisan politics, and that clients could be put at risk of losing government benefits. Dershowitz, National Post Published: Saturday, October 14, 2006 Michael Ignatieff, the former Harvard human rights professor and current candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, has made two serious misstatements regarding the recent war between Hezbollah and Israel, and most particularly the Israeli military actions in the Lebanese town of Qana. Back in August, Ignatieff said that he was "not losing sleep" over the attack in which 29 civilians, who had sought refuge in a building, were killed when the Israeli air force fired a missile at what it believed was a Hezbollah rocket-launching site. Every humane person -- and Ignatieff is surely that -- should lose sleep whenever innocent civilians are killed, regardless of who is at fault. Many Israelis, including soldiers, lost sleep over Qana, as did many friends of Israel around the world. Ignatieff was rightly criticized for his insensitivity and later acknowledged that he was wrong in his choice of words. Now in an apparent effort to compensate for his insensitivity toward Lebanese civilians, he has once again put his foot in his mouth. This time, he characterized "what happened in Qana" as "a war crime" and said that this was "clear." Ignatieff is not a lawyer, but he is an expert on human rights and he should know that for a military attack to constitute a "war crime" -- the most serious charge that could be made against a soldier -- there must be an intention to deliberately target innocent civilians. Civilians are almost always killed during wars, especially wars in which combatants -- who are legitimate military targets -- deliberately hide among civilians and fire their rockets from civilian population centres, as Hezbollah does. Ignatieff has surely seen the videos and other indisputable evidence that Hezbollah was launching rockets from areas near the building that Israel bombed. He surely knows that Israeli intelligence was completely unaware that Lebanese civilians were hiding in the building. He cannot reasonably believe that the Israeli air force deliberately intended to kill the civilians in the building. Why then would he characterize the resulting tragedy as a "war crime?" There are several possible answers. The first is that he simply misspoke in the course of an interview in which he wanted to make up for his past misstatement. If that is the case, he should be accused only of carelessness. The second possible explanation has far greater implications for his candidacy to lead a great political party. It is possible that he believes that even if the Israeli killing of Lebanese civilians was an unintended consequence of its efforts to prevent rocket attacks against its own civilians, it was still a war crime. Such a view would reflect a perverse and dangerous approach to international law that would make it nearly impossible for democracies to protect its civilians from terrorists who launch rockets from civilian population centres. It would also encourage other terrorist groups to emulate the tactic employed by Hezbollah in its recent war against Israel: to use local civilians as human shields behind whom the terrorists fire their rockets at enemy civilians. This gives the democracy only two choices: to protect its civilians by destroying the rocket launchers even if that means some civilians will inevitably be killed; or do nothing and allow its own civilians to be targeted. Faced with this choice of evils imposed by the terrorist, every democracy would chose to protect its own civilians, as Israel did.

Where are all the condemnations of Hezbollah by the liberals - the one sided condemnation on their part points to their anti-Israeli stance. Harper is only stating the obvious - methinks the Liberals doth protest too much.

Well, I guess Iggy must have thoroughly researched the Qana events in depth and took into consideration that Israel did issue warnings well in advance, and also noted the well documented Hezbollah practice of using human shields. In which case is Mr. Ignatieff compromising his ethics etc. by taking pot shots at Israel to gain an electoral advantage while ignoring Hezbollah's atrocities?

Bear in mind that they have declared that only Arab medications (?) will be used, and no Israeli products will be allowed. Also some doctors will not prescribe Jewish medications (how can that be determined). Could this mean that patients will die in that hospital, of an illness which could be cured, but won't be because a Jew invented or developed the cure or medical procedure. Should be interesting to see how that works and what happens if they start losing a lot of patients. Back around 1996 my son aspired to join the RCMP, he was told by a school councillor that he didn't have much of a chance because of their hiring policy re: affirmative action. I wrote a letter to the RCMP and received a letter back confirming this, explaining how the process worked, I then wrote to my MPP and the PM - I never received a reply. Discrimination in hiring has been firmly rooted in the RCMP, for a long time. A few years ago, then RCMP Commissioner Phil Murray and Human Rights Commissioner Max Yalden decreed that the force should consist of: 20% women, 4.5% aboriginals and 8.3% visible minorities.
