  1. There really isn't a concensus on how large of a problem it really is, and if we can do anything at all to stop it. His report gives prescriptions for how to minimise disruption. Stern's central argument is that spending large sums of money now on measures to reduce carbon emissions will bring dividends on a colossal scale. It would be wholly irrational, therefore, not to spend this money. However, he warns that we are too late to prevent any deleterious consequences from climate change. However, it would also be a massive government boondoggle if we spend huge sums of money now on a problem that may not exist , and if it does, we can't stop it anyhow. There are many articles over the years saying just that, from the fraudulent hockey stick warming profile, to the rigged measurements of the Greenland ice pack. I am not denying that we have a huge pollution problem or that the earth may be changing, and we certainly have to work towards cleaning up our act in a timely manner, but I'm of the opinion that much of the warming (or cooling towards an ice age) is part of the earth's cycle, something we can't do anything about. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/GB25Aa02.html a good chronology http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4066189.stm http://www.sitewave.net/PPROJECT/s33p36.htm http://www.nodnc.com/modules.php?name=Cont...age&pid=106 http://www.heartland.org/Article.cfm?artId=11548

  3. Me too didn't go any further.
  4. My neighbour when I lived in the big smoke was an aborignal lady, we had some good times in the back yard. She was married to a non native and did not believe in taking from the taxpayers, she refused to apply for a card and paid her taxes, she didn't believe in apartheid. I admired that young lady.
  5. The Liberals need to look in the mirror when they complain about sexism etc. How many of their campaign people with any power are women - none as far as iIknow, and no visible minority. This from pictures and Globe and Mail article They are obviously not walking the talk. Wait, there was one woman, Martha Findlay, so may I suggest that those Liberals who are griping about women and respect should look in the mirror.
  6. The clerik in Australia is being backed by a British cleric Further to the issue of the veil, more on this is coming out. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-2426770,00.html Veil teacher was obeying a fatwa Abul Taher THE Muslim teacher who insisted on wearing a veil in class has been following a fatwa issued personally to her by a Islamic cleric belonging to a hardline sect. Aishah Azmi found herself in the middle of a national row about integration when she took her school to an employment tribunal after it suspended her for refusing to remove the veil in class. Tony Blair joined the debate about the wearing of veils — opened by Jack Straw, the Commons leader — and supported the school’s actions. Azmi, 24, has maintained that her decision to wear the veil was driven entirely by her personal beliefs, rather than the advice or instruction of a third party. But this weekend it emerged that she refused to take the veil off at school after receiving a fatwa, or religious ruling, from Mufti Yusuf Sacha, a Muslim cleric in West Yorkshire. "
  7. Right, so that is why Harper should want a spring election, before the other parties can get their act together.
  8. That I think is the question, I've read that only about 10% of Muslims are of the radical variety, but 10% is one he.. of a lot.
  9. This parliament has ceased to function, nothing isactually getting done and everything is mere posturing for the coming election. I have an idea that Harper might allow a defeat on a confidence motion between now and Xmas to precipitate an election, what with the Libs half way between first and second, leader-wise. In which case they would have to go into a two minute drill to select a leader and sign up candidates (which is very very problematic until they actually have a leader), and solidify an election platform which appears to be a complete muddle right now e.g.: Do they support the Quebec 'Nation" notion. Do they support the War on Terror/ Al Quaeda/Taliban? If Kyoto, do they support a Carbon Tax? Given the new study that shows obesity has caused N. Americans to need more gas to haul their fat buns around, do they support a Fat Tax? Are they soft on crime/criminals or just soft in the head - their current reasoning seems to be that new prisons are too expensive to bother, so we should just let criminals run amok. What would they do with the current revenue surpluses of $17 Billion? Taxcuts to the people who paid them or more spend, spend, spend!!! Meanwhile, Harper is getting ready for an election; he is positioning the party and setting the Libs up on Crime Bills and Accountability Bills, currently stalled in an 'un-elected, Liberal appointed, obstructionist' Senate. He can now define them as taxpayer money spendin' an' a squandrin', bureaucracy buildin', security neglectin', Taliban luvin', separatist suckups. By the time the Libs and their new leader actually get into the race, he'lll have them on the ropes. (well, I hope) This is looking good, I just hope a winter election isn't called again or I'll miss the durn thing.
  10. What do you propose to do about the Muslims? The best we (western society) can do is insist that they follow our laws, and clamp down on the clerics who promote violence and hate. What I'm, not sure about is how many of the radicals there really are, and if they actually are on the fringe, or represent a larger group. e.g. The following are quotes from people who represent the Muslim establishment in the U.S. and are on record wishing America would be ruled by Islamic law and not the Constitution * The former head of the American Muslim Council -- supposedly the "most mainstream Muslim organization in America" -- exhorted Muslims to turn the U.S. into an Islamic nation ruled by Quranic law even if it takes "a hundred years," according to federal court records. * Popular New York imam Siraj Wahhaj told his flock in a taped sermon available at his mosque: "In time, this so-called democracy will crumble, and there will be nothing. And the only thing that will remain will be Islam." * Another so-called moderate cleric, Zaid Shakir, admitted in a recent interview with the New York Times: "I would like to see America become a Muslim country." What we should be doing is requiring all immigrants, to take some courses on our laws, tolerance and make it clear that there will never, ever be any form of Sharia law allowed here. I also believe that we have to stop giving in to requests for separation e.g. women not being able swim with men and separate swim tests etc. in secular public places. We need someone strong enough to speak out and be willing to take the flak and the usual accusations from the left. People who are willing to call a spade a spade and make it clear that we welcome all people, but will not tolerate any Sharia law, abuse of women or calls for the eradication of our way of life.
  11. Exactly, it is not the colour of one's skin that is the issue, it is how different cultures adapt to democracy and our ideas of tolerance for all views. We cannot accept any culture or religion that attempts to set itself apart by having its own laws, we have to make it clear that one can worship the sun for all we care, just don't threaten to kill people with whom you don't like, or threat Jihad for perceived sleights, and accept that we live in a democracy where we have free will, including women. As far as I know it is the only faith that tells its followers to seek political power and impose their law — sharia — in order that the rest of society conforms to their beliefs. Is it possible to say you can come here but you must abide by our laws and conform to our mainstream ideals of democracy and freedom of speech - I'm not sure because their religion forbids it does it not?

  13. OK. Then who was he? If I didn't read it, why comment? This is why... I don't come here to read other people's research. I come here with my own research to debate other views of the world. Read your own bloody sources and then explain them to the rest of us. If I doubt that you have quoted your source correctly, then I might read it. Otherwise I am busy enough trying to keep up with my own sources thank you very much. It is your job to convince me that your sources and opinions are right. This is a debate, not a civics class. Research is reading other people's writings and analysis, that was a source of information. Research is a collection of information - unless of course you subscribe to creative thinking 101 and make it up as you go along. Have a great day.
  14. There's no question that people must be free to decide for themselves what suits them. I'm not talking about packing people like sardines either. In two- or three-storey buildings with retail operations on the main floor, they're quite comfortably spaced. This is a model that existed for centuries until around the 1950s. What's bad for the psyche and soul, not to mention the pocketbook, personal safety, and the environment, is spending two hours a day commuting. True, I wouldn't do that either. However, I took the TTC daily to downtown Toronto, it took me 1 hour and 20 mins. to get to the office, 10 mins. less if I timed iit to get an express bus. If I drove (which I did if I had to stay for overtime) I could do it in 35 mins. There were times then, when I would have appreciated living downtown, but not with kids. I can't imagine raising kids in downtown Toronto.
  15. I read your post (but not the link). Who is the strategist? Some guy selling turnips in the market? A witty bon-vivant biking along the canal? A tipsy clubiste on an Elgin Saturday night? Enquiring minds want to know. I would of course expect nothing less than the unvarnished truth from the National Post. Hardly, but if you didn't read it why comment, the article said that he was from the al-Qaeda information and strategy committee - did they all fall of the turnip truck yesterday? As for learning from history and the Crusades, we are learning that there has been a revisionism with regard to the Crusades so if we look at it without the revisionism we can see that there is a similar pattern. The Crusades as awful and barbaric as they were, on both sides, were in response to aggressive Muslim expansionism, they were not simply unprovoked attacks against a toleran Muslim society. The eastern crusades were defensive, a direct response to Muslim aggression, they were trying to defend the conquest of Christian lands and to liberate Jerusalem. The world has changed a lot, particularly the Western world, maybe Margrace should go back and do a bit of reading.
  16. Should we take this seriously and step up security, should we quit Afghanistan, I don't like giving in to terrorist threats. http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/st...c3-6c79218d4d91 Al-Qaeda warns Canada Quit Afghan mission or endure attack like 9/11, threat says Stewart Bell, National Post Published: Saturday, October 28, 2006 OTTAWA - An al-Qaeda strategist has warned Canada to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan or face terrorist attacks similar to 9/11, Madrid and the London transit bombings. The threat, attributed to a member of the al-Qaeda information and strategy committee, condemns Prime Minister Stephen Harper for refusing to pull out of Afghanistan. It also refers to Canada's "fanatic adherence to Christianity" as well as its purported attempts to "damage the Muslims" and its support for the "Christian Crusade" against al-Qaeda. "Despite the strong, increasing opposition to spread its forces in the fire of South Afghanistan, it seems that they will not learn the lesson easily," Hossam Abdul Raouf writes. "They will either be forced to withdraw their forces or face an operation similar to New York, Madrid, London and their sisters, with the help of Allah." The document, written in July, was obtained and translated by the SITE Institute, a U.S. non-profit group that monitors terrorist Web sites for clients, many of them in government. It is the second reference in recent weeks to al-Qaeda singling out Canada because of its role in Afghanistan.
  17. Left/right wing bashing aside, you have to admit it is a conundrum for the left which allows no discussion on radical Islam without the usual name calling. Wonder what they are saying about it.
  18. A society that provides free no questions asked healthcare service to babies. The parents should have been introduced to the hundreds of people that will go without knee or hip replacements because of the money spent on these aberrations of nature. We have to be willing to say no. We have to be willing to make cruel choices and tell people that free medical insurance does not cover heroic measures to save babies that have no chance of ever having a normal life. I tend to agree. We cannot force people to have abortions, that is unthinkable. What we can do is make it clear to the parents, that if they choose to go ahead with the birth, the medical procedures for separating them will not be paid for. Either that, or they refuse to perform the operation, at least in this case where they share a brain and there appears to be no hope for much of a life for either one.
  19. Exactly. We have the same, although our town is a lot smaller, a lovely lakefront, walking and ski trails close by. We retired here a few years ago, lived in the GTA all my life prior to that, you would never get me back there if you paid me. And, why should I have to, we have the freedom to choose where we live and how we live it. We we live within our means and do what we can for recycling etc. etc. High-density cities, packing people like sardines into apt. buildings might be good for something, but its not good for the human psyche or soul; people should be free to pursue their dream. Zero population growth is the answer but I don't see that happening.
  20. I see it more as an attack on all of us, than a brainwashing of the women. They are saying, in effect, "we live here, but don't want any part of you". They are also saying they don't trust men. Don't forget the cleric in Australia who referred to women as meat, read his little speech and you'll get the idea. http://www9.sbs.com.au/theworldnews/region...48&region=7 The following are extracts from Sheik Taj Din al-Hilaly's controversial sermon given last month, as independently translated by an SBS Arabic expert. "Those atheists, people of the book (Christians and Jews), where will they end up? In Surfers Paradise? On the Gold Coast? Where will they end up? In hell and not part-time, for eternity. They are the worst in God’s creation." "When it comes to adultery, it’s 90 percent the woman’s responsibility. Why? Because a woman owns the weapon of seduction. It’s she who takes off her clothes, shortens them, flirts, puts on make-up and powder and takes to the streets, God protect us, dallying. It’s she who shortens, raises and lowers. Then, it’s a look, a smile, a conversation, a greeting, a talk, a date, a meeting, a crime, then Long Bay jail. Then you get a judge, who has no mercy, and he gives you 65 years." there's more....
  21. I agree. But it seems this has been going on since 1991, and Christians and Jews have been using this same system...so why hasn't anyone complained about this before? I'm guessing not too many people were aware of it, but apart from that, there didn't seem to be the issue of forced compliance. IMO it was simply the first step towards expanding Sharia law, I doubt it would stop at arbitration issues.
  22. The Conservatives are having to resort to opposition like stall tactics in order to stop the opposition from setting the legislative agenda. Their efforts to kill the gun registry, pass crime bills and introduce an environmental plan are being stopped at the pass. The Opposition parties are putting through private member's bills on the environment, and a ban on scab labour. In fact, a A CPC MP had to resort to delivering a monologue on parliamentary procedure to prevent a committee from proceeding with a Liberal-sponsored bill that would force the government to go through with the Kyoto accord. The amendments include a doubling of political donation limits to $2,000 from Bill C-2's initial limit of $1,000. The current limit is $5,400. Remember, as Baird said, this is an "un-elected" Senate, which is attempting to stop legislation and revamping the bill. If the Senate does succeed it will be a big part of a CPC campaign. Note that the plan to impose term limits on Canadian senators has been endorsed in principle by the special committee on Senate reform.
  23. Interesting, some think it was taken out of context, do you have a link?
  24. Um...no. Anarchy and civil unrest is a problem, obviously. But it's a pretty big leap to go from there to the idea that France is on the verge of collapse and an even bigger leap to suggest Europe itself is on the ropes. (I find right-wingers here to be very strange creatures: on the one hand, they can happily argue that Iraq and Afghanistan are doing just fine, thanks, despite windespread instability and daily desth tolls in the double or triple digits. Yet a few Citroëns get torched in the Paris slums and its the end of freaking civilization as we know it. Weird.) Hmmm, I don't think anyone has suggested everything is fine in Iraq, right wing or otherwise, and it is more than a few cars being torched. I don't think France is on the verge of collapse, yet, but they are definitly having a problem getting things under control http://www.washtimes.com/commentary/200610...03453-5327r.htm .....These are not empty threats. An average of 14 policemen a day are injured in bloody clashes with jobless youths. France's Interior Ministry said 2,500 police officers had been "wounded" this year. The head of the hard-line trade union "Action Police" Michel Thooris wrote to Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy to describe conditions in housing developments turned slums as "intifada." Police cruisers are pelted daily with stones and "Molotov cocktails" (gasoline-filled bottles with burning wicks that explode on impact) and Mr. Thooris said cops assigned to what was rapidly degenerating into "free fire zones" should be protected in armored vehicles. Entire tall buildings empty into the streets to chase police and free an arrested comrade. "We are in a state of civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists," Mr. Thooris told journalists. Mr. Sarkozy, the leading center-right candidate for next year's presidential election, responded by dispatching cops in body armor, equipped with automatic weapons and rubber bullets, stun and teargas grenades into several Paris suburbs with orders to "restore control" from "organized crime." In one recent clash 250 cops dispersed a 100-strong Muslim gang armed with baseball bats. You might get a kick out of this one: http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/1609 The Rape of Europe From the desk of Paul Belien on Wed, 2006-10-25 20:57 The German author Henryk M. Broder recently told the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant (12 October) that young Europeans who love freedom, better emigrate. Europe as we know it will no longer exist 20 years from now. Whilst sitting on a terrace in Berlin, Broder pointed to the other customers and the passers-by and said melancholically: “We are watching the world of yesterday.” Europe is turning Muslim. As Broder is sixty years old he is not going to emigrate himself. “I am too old,” he said. However, he urged young people to get out and “move to Australia or New Zealand. That is the only option they have if they want to avoid the plagues that will turn the old continent uninhabitable.” Many Germans and Dutch, apparently, did not wait for Broder’s advice. The number of emigrants leaving the Netherlands and Germany has already surpassed the number of immigrants moving in. One does not have to be prophetic to predict, like Henryk Broder, that Europe is becoming Islamic. Just consider the demographics. The number of Muslims in contemporary Europe is estimated to be 50 million. It is expected to double in twenty years. By 2025, one third of all European children will be born to Muslim families. Today Mohammed is already the most popular name for new-born boys in Brussels, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and other major European cities. Broder is convinced that the Europeans are not willing to oppose islamization. “The dominant ethos,” he told De Volkskrant, “is perfectly voiced by the stupid blonde woman author with whom I recently debated. She said that it is sometimes better to let yourself be raped than to risk serious injuries while resisting. She said it is sometimes better to avoid fighting than run the risk of death.”............. is she right? Are all of these reports baseless, simply 'Islamaphobia' are people just making this up ?
  25. High oil prices, suberbia etc. etc. are all based on large numbers of consumers, cut back on the population and we might get somewhere. Until someone is willing to stand up and discourage population increases instead of encouraging and wanting more, why should I have to live in cramped quarters in a filthy over populated dangerous city.
