The actions of Carter, Reagan, & Clinton seem to fly in the face of your assertion that "U.S. presidents don't get paid for peace"....after all that was your very authoratative claim. Can you elaborate? Ergo, U.S. presidents do indeed get paid for peace. Some have even been successful at peace but not of recent vintage. I believe its called foreign policy. However, peace is a good thing.
