Rt. Hon. A. Clarkson GG (ret.)
Ricki Bobbi replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Got me there gerry. Yet again, add nothing to the thread and just post to attack another poster. Good work! I'll go back to actually debating the topic. Have you spent anytime in small-town Quebec? How could anybody argue that Star Academie was an expression of our highest aspirations as human beings? Just like Canadian Idol, Star Academie is representative of a celebrity-obsessed culture. It also got *huge* ratings in Quebec. -
Other people that should have been GG.

Qualifications *should* have something to do with the appointment of the GG. Martin's pathetic attempt at winning votes, neither of which worked, can't justify this unqualified choice. Less than four years left to live with this travesty... -

Please. If you want to argue for something like wikipedia, but then don't take the onus to prove it. Sure is easy to argue taking the stance you took. Again missing the point on the unreliability of Wikipedia while you are too lazy to prove your own point. -

Really? Would this peer review be equivalent to the peer review of academic journals? Who exactly would have reviewed the article on Michaelle Jean? -

Great point! The unreliability of Wikipedia has been proven many times .... and now onto the man who provide tonight's high point of unintentional comedy. Hmmm, let's look at those many qualifications and qualities beyond journalism. She spent years studying languages and literature. Then worked at women's shelters and with immigrant women. What would be lacking? Experience or training in the law or working with parliament. Experience working with high level government officials. International work experience (outside of junkets paid for by Radio Canada.). Experience working with high level bureaucrats or politicians from foreign countries. Kinda missing all of those. Thanks again for keeping the tone upbeat and respectful though... -

What is so impressibe about those qualifications? How is experience in journalism a qualification for being the titular head of state? -

Huh? That one got me too. I think Clarkson makes the mistake of assuming Montreal culture is Quebec culture. Just like she probably assumes the culture of Toronto is representative of the culture of English Canada. Neither are really true and goes to show how out of touch she really is. She is symbolic of how out of touch the position of GG really is. I do wonder why she feels she was qualified for the role of GG while Michaelle Jean wasn't.. -
Any comments on Wente's article then?
-
Haven't read the book, but Margaret Wente's column on it in today's Globe says some pretty interesting things about the book. (No link, the column is subscriber only.) She makes some interesting points. Some snobish and insulting points. (Although I think she is confusing Montreal intelligentsia culture for Quebec culture.) She tries to defend her and hubby's pomposity. Don't know if I want to contribute to Clarkson's bank account but it seems like ti would be an interesting read.

Was Martin really that far left? I'm wondering if Ignatieff would move the party to the right or just prevent it from moving left? Dion is only slightly ahead of Rae and Ignatieff in Quebec. How could he show he could win Quebec between now and December 3rd?

Why talk about a party being ready to govern when they haven't polled above third place since the election and are averaging popular support in the high teens?

Gun Registry - Gun Crime Measures
Ricki Bobbi replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The tragedy at Dawson College is very, very sad. As the guns he used were legally obtained it appears that there won't be much political traction for people trying to use it for political gain. -
This is just fallout from the Riddell/Cutler story *last* fall. Don't really understand a guy like Riddell. Why break a congfidentiality agreement? Was he really that committed to the party in the first point?

The constitution should not have been brought home without all provinces as signatories. Trudeau was more concerned about his place in history than the best interest of Canadians. A true visionary would have put patriation of the constitution on hold until a more amenable provincial government was in place in Quebec.

Great point. Now that the Press Gallery has caved in, even just *temporarily*, what are the odds Harper will back down in the future?
-
Mercer has his moments and that was definitely one of htem.

If you're jealous send me something to turn my thoughts elsewhere. Hmm very Clintonian to use the present tense about a past election.

Odious and obtuse were just comments on your behaviour and not personal attacks. That is the line you have drawn repeatedly... The press gallery wasn't boycotting the list of questioners at the Paul Martin scrums during the election. Something you just said wasn't the tradition. So could you answer my question in a non-obtuse, non-obstinate manner?
-
Because he wants reporters to put their name on a list to ask him questions at press conferences he is avoiding them?
-
So your definition isn't an insult?
-
When did *the right* use the term "leading by polling"? Cite one example. Can't defend somebody from an accusation that I never saw. I'm taking your constant avoidance of the issue to mean that you really don't believe there is a significant difference between a PMO list of questions askers in a scrum and a press conference.
