It will have profound impacts in any turn of events. A decisive junction, a landmark. Can any lying conman and convicted felon be the leader of the country? Is it still a democracy? Can it respect itself and have principles and values (what)? No, nothing can be the same now. It's about the essence, the core not some pageant ritual. Always was, except at some point we seem to have forgotten.

You see, these folks seem to live on another planet in some alternate universe, how else could one explain what they see? Twelve ordinary citizens, countrymen and women made this conviction. They were selected by the lawyers of both sides. That's just not what seem to have happened on their planet! The proof of extraterrestrial non-human intelligence, right here.

The only way to "have peace with Hamas" you meant? Via negotiations? Why couldn't one have peace with Hamas, if its possible with Putin? Is it because you think that you can kick Hamas's ass (that isn't a given just yet, only what you think) but admire the rough brutality of the other, bigger thug? Is it the size of the bully that accounts for most or all of that rightful wrath? People who can think from both sides of their brain simultaneously and without any bells just fascinate me.

To nominate a convicted felon, machinations, deceit and bribery to the post of the leader of the nation and the free world? Or not to nominate? The question. Sure, a (stinky and shameful) milestone in the history of the American democracy. But also: an entirely logical and predictable outcome. When you give in to insanity; to a loudmouth authoritarian cult mob bit by bit and piece by piece, in the hope to tame it and run for your ends: doesn't it always fire back? Like, always? See? Bombastic liars are always around. It's not about them, but what do you do, and how, and why. It was so easy to avoid, sticking to the principles and integrity but oh well. Yes, an interesting one to watch. A landmark juncture.

I'm watching sometimes how it's being built too. A ragtag group of local companies; rusty pipes; a huge public investment in metal plates.. in the environment of constant vibration and adverse elements. Seem like the next question will be how much we'll be pouring into it to keep it running from (guessing) around year two? Is anybody even thinking about these things? Can Canada build anything anymore: on the global level of challenge and advancement; quality; and value to the public?

Well: no. Israel's declaration of independence: May 14, 1948. State of Israel admitted to UN: May 11, 1949. Does it look like a lot of effort? The conflict: 1949 - 2029 at least (but don't hold breath). Could it have been worth just a tiny bit more of a genuine effort to find a solution acceptable to all?

Look, try to get over your initial emotional response. Seriously. In a functional modern democracy there's the principle of equality of citizens before the law, that is obviously opposite to: "someone has to be above the law". And this is no Cesar by a lightyear-long measure. If the citizen's jury decided otherwise, it would have been accepted by everybody. This is about the principles of democracy, not a football game.

Well they cant really spew anything but barefaced lies. Trump jury selection: "Prospective jurors in former President Trump’s hush money trial can expect to be asked about QAnon and antifa — but not their political party affiliation." Yeah like the reality matters anything anymore.. to some of us.

I agree with the diagnosis maybe not about the patient If independent and impartial justice executed by the citizens regardless of the position of the accused is "banana republic" then a prime example of democracy would be what? Putin's Russia? Iran? All is relative, remember? Einstein knew)

Interesting, could it be the other way around too? That the borders were rushed before and without the agreement of the people on the ground? Really, what was the rush to approve the unilateral declaration? Why couldn't it have been a tentative approval of two states simultaneously, with a process, perhaps not easy, perhaps taking time to negotiate and agree the border with all of the stakeholders? Right, not a snap of fingers but consider the prize, looking back now: no wars, none; minus decades of conflict; minus one permanent hot spot on the planet? Why wasn't it worth even a try? The answer may not be pleasant: wasn't out of great love to Jews; look no further than only a few short years earlier, ships turned away, children accepted only without adults. Sincere guilt, possibly but doubtful. A distraction, that would more like us, way more. Show us in a great light here and now and to f-k with the consequences they'll figure it out somehow. On your hunch, which one would it be?

World needs a functional global alliance of democracies. Now

Has anyone promised us that it will be "long", always? I haven't noticed. -
I don't see much point in going back in time but if we have to, let's remember the objective facts of history: it's the state of Israel that was declared unilaterally, without the agreement of the majority of all of the population that resided in the territory. This is the past, but how credible is it to claim today objections due to "unilateral" recognition? The U.S. have that traditional policy but it has problems with credibility. And certainly not the expansion beyond internationally recognized borders that followed.

Gaza is not a viable state on its own. Isn't something here reminiscent of cutting out bantustans in an apartheid Africa and pretending them to be "independent"? Misrepresentations and half truths will not add anything to the picture and the solution. All this time Israel continued to encroach on what is internationally recognized, including by the United Nations as the land that does not belong to it. The same "unilateral" argument goes the other way too: Israel has the full right to defend herself within her internationally recognized borders; but the moment she steps over them, her actions become undefendable. Attacks perpetrated by Hamas absolutely amounted to war crimes. But one cannot deny, in honesty, that conservative Israeli governments contributed to the build up of hate with their policy of steady encroachment. Partial, one-sided truths will not solve anything here. The only other option is: a war to eternity.

Maybe someone some time will figure out that this is actually a thing, and it has to happen now. Maybe, if we're in luck. Don't hold your breath just yet.
