The Chinese government tried to cover up the virus..probably in a panic not a deliberate intentional attempt to kill. People forget how large China's government and population are and how difficult it is for them to coordinate any damn policy. I ain't apologizing for their government's ineptitude... but getting angry at it won't help. China needs to understand if it does not clean up its act we must boycott its products..and if need be require its citizens testedc for the virus before entry to Canada if it does not clean its markets up. Sweden feels they have sufficient services already in place to avoid a swamping of hospitals with cases. Whether they will be swamped or not is not known quite yet. The deaths they feel would be the same spread out or not but they had no equivalent worry as to back log. It will be interesting to see if there death rates will actually be higher or have just have come more rapidly. That we have to wait to see, In terms of back logs they have none at this time although some are worried they may still and so may still have to quarantined. Its being monitored. Sweden has a different approach to euthanasia and death than we do in Canada..a lot less fear over death when discussing it. That said whether it has led to more deaths or did not, we will know in a year of studies following the decline of this pandemic to a low level where stats can be gathered and compared using similiar quantification. I am of the view distancing was needed and has been working and may not have been needed to such an extent had we done other proper planning. That said we did not, so I believe we had no choice. All we had to go by was China who covered it up and lied about it. When in doubt distancing is a basic emergency technique with any disease that is contagious. No you can not do it forever but not to have done it in the absence of an ability to properly test and isolate carriers which still is the case, would have been irresponsible. Even if we erred on the side of caution when all is said and done surely we can live with that as opposed to deaths we could have prevented. I argue we have to put other procedures in place and we can't stay shut down forever but I can't fault the shut down. It was one in the name of saving lives. Let's just see now how much longer How long it has to continue is a hard one. I have guessed mid May to end of May myself if we did go by what has happened in China. However that is a guess based on assuming it flattens the way it did in China. They say the peak in Canada is pretty much the next week. BC flattened their rate out already, Quebec and Ontario not quite. Manitoba still rising if I am not mistaken. Its a big country. Our isolated regions create their own issues in terms of limited medical resources if it spreads there. I think quarantines may be necessary for awhile longer but not too much longer. I thin we can bounce back from this. I think we can. It will be hard but in a unifying way.

Actually there is no uniform treatment of flus any more than there is for covid. Vaccines we have are only for a few strains. Typical flus as you call them and most accurately any viruses can allow opportunistic infections in bacterial, fungi and parasitical forms to piggy back into a body and sicken/or kill its host body including attacking the respiratory tract system quickly and harshly. In addition the fact so many people with covid have remained symptom free with this virus or with mild symptoms plus its high recovery rates do not indicate it as deadly as some may feel. The belief it is more deadly has resulted from a combination of negative myopic press coverage and our lockdown which both contribute to an over amplification of deaths from covid making these deaths seem larger then they actually are . This is known as the psychological phenomena of proximity distortion. Things closer to us seem much larger and vice versa things more remote seem smaller and thosectyst can not be seen we may not even acknowledge. We see covid deaths right now. It is literally in our face but the fact is everyday people continue to die from other viruses and diseases other than covid. We just do not see those deaths. In fact the no. 1 killer medically each day is diaheria. There is no data at this time to accurately compare death rates between covid and other viruses or diseases. Yes its serious, contagious, a killer but had we put proper protocols in place after the Sars out-break we may not have required the lockdown and the concern for this virus would not be as it is now. We only get concerned with death when it literally is at our door. That said without public safety measures for all diseases we would be dead.

The reason the pandemic is controlled differently in Singapore and South Korea is not simply about wearing masks. This forum has actually had some very good debates explaining masks and their use and purpose. You can also go read about it on many sites. I do NOT get this Trump shooda cooda stuff the US is not Canada or anyone else, it has unique considerations because of constitutional division of legal powers between so many competing jurisdictions and different patterns of population density. Its easy to second guess what it does no matter who is really calling the shots. The US has a lot of fragmented and disjointed agencies its trying to get to work together. That is a monumental challenge. People forget how large its health and government bureaucracies are. I still have more confidence in the US than China, Iran. I think Trump is a red herring. I personally believe China is lying about continuing numbers because in a country of 2 billion, losing millions of its people is considered collateral chump change to its larger concern of not shutting down its wet markets. Its people are expendable to its central government's concerns of protecting its economic markets. I believe this virus had it been reported immediately and properly planned for by China and by all first world countries would not have triggered the wide spread quarantines we see. That is a blame that starts with the Chinese government, that then includes secondarily all first world governments, then we first world consumers to the extent we should never have settled for cheap dangerous shit. This is an urban virus directly related to how we believe profit trumps safety and health regulations. That is a problem Trump did not start and will not end.

To reassure people the state of emergency does not automatically correspond in time with quarantine times. It's very possible it will apply during graduated return to work protocols we will be asked to follow if that ever happens. I never fully trust state of emergencies because any law that tells you that you can not move around freely is a threat to the most fundamental right of democracy. If its abused you have a police state. If you do not use it in times of crisis it could cause harm as well. Its a slippery slope. The longer you restrict mobility the more likely someone's bubble will burst.
