I can see it hurting the economy. Tax and spend policies especially having to be propped up by two spend happy parties won't help with the deficit and with keeping up the pace with attracting business to canada. Things are going good and are steadily improving, no need for tax and spend.

Jdobbin was talking about this a couple years back. It involved a situation with the liberal party. Its a sort of strategy by harper to polarize canada into 2 camps, the ndp and the tories and basically have alberta style government providing the ndp keeps its hard left line. The tories are poaching red tories from the liberals and the liberals are foolishly going after the ndp and giving them more credibility. Had the liberals ran on a more economy friendly platform it would be a dogfight bw the tories and liberals and essentially a toss up. Going to the left doesn't work for the liberals.

The numbers don't lie kimmy. When canada has slashed corporate taxes, gdp has gone up, unemployment has gone down, and foreign investment (which is something we need to exploit our resources) is up. Its a policy that has worked out well for us, and the fact that other countries are pursuing that plan or are already using it is proof that it works. It may seem nice to paint corporations as faceless entities and use them as a whipping boy when things go wrong, but at the end of the day its never a good idea to cook the golden goose. As for the university thing, I get scared for some students because if enough people go to university, that four year degree will become useless and kids will need to go for 6-8 yrs in order to get a decent wage earning job that they can justify their education for. There will always be inequality as far as wealth is concerned. Trying to level it out with education is an expensive fools errand. If mintz is correct and 200000 jobs are lost with this tax hike, there will be a lot of poor people with a university education. Its far better to provide an environment for job growth and let the populace acquire the skills to match the job than to load up with skills that may not be necessary.

Correct, what's even funnier is that after the same band wanted a paved road built to their new casino. They were promptly told to pound sand. That was a while ago and I don't know if they got their road built.

There are chinks in Harper’s economic armour
blueblood replied to Harry's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That depends on what metrics a person uses as a standard of living. Some people use the average on what services they get, or being comfortable, others use the metrics of the opportunity to improve one's self and the luxuries a person gets when one improves themselves. -
There are chinks in Harper’s economic armour

Your right, and that's why I brought up those places because of the discussion of norway and its oil and gas situation. Still we have mb and ontario lowering taxes as well without oil... -

Oh stop the madness. Stat oil which is a govt entity enjoys a lot more govt support than oil companies in canada. That's why there is so much money in norway's kitty is that the profits go to the govt. As a result norweigans are paying an opportunity cost of epic proportions. It is much harder to get rich out there. There are no lifted up trucks or 3000 sq. Ft homes. Why is it so many immigrants prefer to come to north america vs the nordi countries? The opportunity for any one person to get ahead and become rich is worth far more than a 500 billion dollar kitty. Its free to succeed and free to fail. And judging by albera, bc, and sk's success of lowering taxes and have an increasing prosperity is proof that the low tax model works. -
I'm just waiting for the news report that says when a staffer goes to the back of the bus and has to bear the news to ignatieff that the game is over.

By far the best comment I have ever seen on the CBC

Do you live under a bridge? -
And the left has a delusional problem with spending. You may have missed the mess with trudeau, don't spend on crap you can't afford, too bad the usa didn't follow this advice. Now they have to raise taxes which slows economic growth.
-
And how pray tell would we get the money needed to extract those resources? Could it be corporations? People like me are having our way, there is a massive influx of foreign and corporate capital to fund these projects. Canada as a result is richer and more people have jobs. Back to the books with you.

I hear gib, but I don't hear studying...

Venezuela and the middle east have lots of resources per capita. How's that going for them? Let's hear some stats, let's see some proof.
-
Its called economies of scale. Had you taken some economic, management, and commerce classes or read some books, you'd know about this already. Here folks is why economic illiteracy is a problem in the western world. Off to wiki with you for some studying.

Wow whoda thunk it, the lowest corporate tax rate in the g7 also has the best gdp numbers and unemployment numbers. Oh those greedy corporate fools and their improving everyone elses lives damn them!!

Get all the party platforms and match your views to which one comes closest. All parties follow the constitution so the only collosal screw up they can do is in terms of the country's finances.
-
Simple, the fact that our economy could take a bath and we have the days of trudeau spending. That's something that can't be cured with an election, that's cured with a decade of tax hikes and slashed spending to pay for it. And 70 % voted against liberals 80% against the NDP 90% against the bloc Judging by the polls I'd say the tories get first crack at forming govt.

When they flaunt their scandinavia card and say how we should be like thwm and if we do everything will be hunky dory.
-
What's all this fear about a majority? Cripes the tories have another election to win four years down the road. Why would they do something "scary" only to get annhilated at the polls. there's better things to vote for someone else than "they might get a majority". There is also the constitution to consider as well.

Just like the left wing myth that capitalist north american countries are poor.
-
In canada a person has more opportunity to get rich. In nordic countries its more of a hold your hand koombaya situation. In north america, its as nice a place to live as you want it to be. Over there, everybody is the same. What works over there wouldn't work here because of the W.I.I.F.M principle and that we are more independant here.
-
Canada has a downtrend in unemployment, a rise in gdp, and falling taxes. Seems like ordinary people are doing good under this setup. Show us proof otherwise, other than that anti-business drivel your spouting off. You think we'd be better off under a better system, prove it. You've been called, throw down.
-
Exactly, you can look at the 2006 election when the media was only too happy to report on the wheels falling off the liberal campaign.
-
But we here in canada have a better standard of living and much lower taxes. The scandinavians can get away with it because they don't mind paying higher taxes. In north america we have a more entrepreneurial attitude, and high taxes gets in the way of a person doing well. In north america its free to succeed and free to fail. In scandinavia you would be comfortable, but not much chance to make the big time.

Work would be stopped and the assets would be mothballed. The refineries are pretty much all in the usa. A lot of the companies out west are canadian, eg suncor. There are a lot of oil reserves around the world other than canada, and if the price of oil production gets too high, alternatives are explored. Fortunately the canadian and sask/alta govts are smarter than that.
