If CUPE's opinion on the Middle East is simple minded for supporting the Palestinians and condeming Israel for their actions then isn't your own opinion for supporting Israel and condeming Palestinian for their action just as simple minded? -

Quick question, would the US steel producers be able to survive without the import duties in the face of cheap Korean and Chinese steel? Aren't the import duties just to level the playing field? (50 cents an hour in China vs. x$ in the U.S.) -

If you want a discussion on this topic, I suggest we create a new thread. I'm all for. Heck, the majority of Canadians were against it in '88 and we still ended up with it. -

"Liberals hate America, they hate flag-wavers, they hate abortion opponents, they hate all religions except Islam, post 9/11. Even Islamic terrorists don't hate America like liberals do. They don't have the energy. If they had that much energy, they'd have indoor plumbing by now." -- Ann Coulter Is it your contention that to love your country (and not be branded a <insert nation here> hating terrorist) you can't disagree with any of the .gov policies (well, at least you MB agree with) at all? -

smoke-free Ontario ?
lost&outofcontrol replied to Charles Anthony's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
You mean like, gay marriage? If you don't like the smell of cigarette smoke, don't go to a place where you might smell it. It is the same logic that says if you don't like seeing gays dance, don't go to a gay bar. I am surprised that the people stridently in favour of gay marriage are not also stridently objecting to this legislation. Gay marriage poses as much a threat to society as cigarette smoke does. Please don't tell me you think gays and 2nd hand smoke is the same. Being gay is not a disease you'll catch because you happen to frequent a cafe which many gays frequent themselves. -

Again, am I an anti-Semite for condemning Israel's human rights violation? Please, Israel is right up there with the countries you mention. From the mass murder in the Lebanon invasion to daily incursion into Palestinian land by Israeli armored convoys. You saw Black dog's (I think it's him) links to amnesty international describing children in a freaking class room being murder for pure fun by sharp shooters. There are UN resolutions condemning human rights violations against all those countries. Every single one gets front page news every once in a while. -

Should that minority (20%) be allowed to have a direct health impact on the others? Isn't this the case of the minority imposing tyranny on the majority? -

I disagree with the constraints imposed by the system but within the structure itself I agree with your conclusion. I hope that made sense. -

Don't make me vomit. As if fairness had a single thing to do with any of the people who hate Israel. Because I denounce Israeli atrocities, I'm an anti-Semite? (I agree that atrocities are happening on both sides by the way) So it never has anything to do with actual human rights violation on the part of Israel? **added** Why do you not attend your union meetings by the way? -

I meant the cause of crime is private property in the case of the copper getting stolen. Everywhere around the world, poverty is cause by the concentration of capital (hence power and influence) in the hands of the few. Tariffs and/or subsidies are imposed everywhere, you only need a good army of lobbies to get them. Why should our US counterparts have them and not us? Isn't free trade all about leveling the playing field and comparative advantage? I agree that the strike could have been averted. -

I don't know to be honest, I've been told in the past that you could be it never came up. I'll try to find the info. It is definitely unfortunate that your union does not advertise when a meeting is coming but (something I don't have a problem with in my local) but you ask your union representatives yourself and ask them. You can't expect them to call all their members every time you have a meeting. If you truly are against the policies of your union leadership then attending the meetings should be a priority. There has to be a small effort on your part. -

I will rephrase then, I wonder how *most people* would feel if *their* employers told *them* that *they* had to work the nights shifts instead of the day shift and that nothing could be done about it? **edit* Having said that, I think the union went on strike partially for the wrong reasons (I'm a believer in parecon.) I never commented on that although I do think this shows the bad side of a "private property society" but that's for another discussion. -
Is Canada too big?
lost&outofcontrol replied to Charles Anthony's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I won't be expecting anything from Ottawa since I'll be living in Quebec by then . But seriously I understand that many of the policies coming from Ottawa will be different. Will French still be an official language, how will the politicians react in losing 20%+ of their constituents. The dynamics of the House of Commons will change after the Bloc packs it up. -

Why don't you attend the meetings, you could vote for the policies you believe in. If the "normal" people like you would attend the meetings then you could change your union's policies. -

Nice cherry picking of information. I'll re-quote what I posted earlier: The Camp David accord was refused by the Palestinians because: This isn't "anti-Zionism as anti-Semitism" but about fairness. **added** 30 Years Of U.S. UN Vetoes, look at how many vetoes the US did against motion condemning state sponsored terrorism on Israel part. Look at his one, it's almost like they "have" something to hide: -

Either you don't know how unions work, or you're lying. It's easy to get involved. Ignorance is bliss. -
And I quote: (3.5% is still wrong of course)Good thing you're there to fight the good fight... **edit* Oh yes and just because I post a link to someone doesn't mean I agree with everything they have to say just like you sometimes link to Bill Oreilly and I'm sure (I hope) you do not agree with everything he has to say.

umm, the Palestinians have recognized Israel's right to exist since 1988 and re-iterated this recognition on several occasions including Madrid in 1991 and the Oslo Accords in September 1993. Arafat letter. I'm a CUPE member and I can vote against resolutions any time I want at general meetings. -

National PostSo, to avoid having to clean toilets or work late, to avoid a small cost, a few hundred workers imposed horrendous costs on hundreds of thousands of other people. I wonder how you would feel if your employer told you that you had to work the nights shifts instead of your day shift and there's nothing you can do about it? Everytime I see people lamenting unions I think of this cartoon.
