The free market can provide a viable alternative in all of the examples that I listed. Why should we fund public libraries out of tax dollars when only a small percentage of people actually use them? If we follow your logic that we should eliminate 'free-riders' by charging people to access public libraries. Sure why not - pay as you go... I have made a case: the CBC gives people the choice of getting programming that is not completely dependent on advertising dollars. This increases the variety and quality of information and programming available to all Canadians. Too bad the quality and variety are so poor... I have never said that the CBC should never be changed or reformed. I am only making the that case that the CBC should receive gov't funding and the PBS model is not workable in the small Canadian media market. You getting a cut from the Central Brainless Club for supportin' them?

To date, 14 out of 19 medals Canada won were won by women. What does it tell you about Canadian males? I was speaking about womens hockey teams. And yes in most places on the planet women are still subserviant to men.

Tories create committee to scrap gun registry.
Spike22 replied to shoop's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
There is already a crime registry...Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) been around for 40 years. So what is your point? -
Great almost everyone agrees dump Kyoto - Yeah! I have to run and dump the anti freeze I changed from my Lincoln Navigator down the drain and then flash up my coal burning fireplace.

The American woman's softball team was allowed to hammer their oponents mercilessly in three Olympics before softball was dumped from the summer games. http://www.sportsposterwarehouse.com/wareh...ynasty05uss.htm They cancelled softball because softball/baseball stink, they're boring sports that are on their way out. A group of women International Olympic Committee members are voting if womens hockey will be retained - apparently they are split in the middle as what to do.

I agree. The hostages have family. If you had cancer, how would you feel if a doctor said that maybe the cancer was benign? How would your family feel? I suspect that Mackay, as an ordinary person, is an optimist. But I think that he should keep his optimistic thoughts to himself when he speaks with the authority of government. When Mackay speaks now, the family of the hostages are not hearing Mackay; they are hearing the Canadian Government. ---- Hostages? IMHO, anyone who goes to Iraq now is making a personal choice. The Canadian government (me, you and our taxes) has absolutely no obligation to do anything for their welfare. I think the Canadian government should make this plain to everyone. If a Canadian is mugged in Caracas, the Canadian Embassy should help - maybe. If a Canadian is kidnapped in Baghdad, the Canadian Embassy should do absolutely - I mean, absolutely - nothing. The Canadian government (and Mackay as our spokesperson) should make this plain to everyone. People should be required to sign a waiver saying they are going 'at their own risk'. There's a point where even going somewhere to offer humanitarian aid is excessively risky and just a stupid thing to do. That's not to say that person's heart isn't in the right spot, just that their mind isn't there with it. Yes these toilets of humanity should be avoided. Definitely not a vacation destination. "Welcome to my country, now slip into this hood and keep you eyes shut now please. - YIKES"

Excrement PM - now to make these a reality... And the scarry thing is that he will do this by order in council bypassing a parlimentary vote of which he is supposed to be the champion.

Bla bla bla why another committee to get rid of the registry. PM do you job and axe this lame buzzard immediately. My wallet can't take much more of these handouts to useless governement programs. [how much will this committe to study scrapping the gun registry cost us?] -
IMV, excellent answer. The situation in one part of North America is not the same as in another part of North America. PEI is not the same as Alberta, or Alabama. I cannot imagine a more personal matter than taking care of a child - even prayers are less personal than a parent's thoughts about a child. Child care policies should be provincial, not federal. ---- It works best when policies allow the parents do the parenting not the provinces or the government. We are so use to big brother government doing everything for us [from cradle to grave] we forget our personal obligations.!!!!!!

Quebec gets much more from the federal government for child care than the other provinces so I doubt they'd agree. Did you know that in Quebec one gets a whopping $8000 cheque with the arrival of a third child? I wonder how much Harper kicks in for that? More BS we have to contend with in this country to keep the GORFs happy. We are actually paying them to reproduce - sad but incredible.

If it was up to me no one would get a red cent. Keep em barefoot and prego is my rule - turn back the clock to when we raised kids in the 50's and 60's. Unfortunately women can read, write and vote now and want the same rights as us working men. Oh no here comes the missus with a frying pan... BONG!!!!! Hi there, Spike22 might be away for a while. Oh dear, that's the kind of system I want! There truly is a big disparity between services among provinces then....from healthcare to this! Well its nice that you guys at least have a system. And Betsy, your comments that at home day care is better than institutionalized daycare, all valid arguments. But for some families its a matter of survival. Parents living in Vancouver with its high priced real estate largely driven by huge equity/off shore money coming here through the eighties, face having to have two incomes or not owning a home. Personally, I am a career woman and choose to work regardless of the daycare situation, or home prices, and as far as I am concerned that is a warranted choice that should be supported by my government, even if it just means having approriate taxes writeoffs to accomodate for adequate daycare. When I had my first two boys 9 and 8 years ago, there were NO daycare choices that suited a full time working mom in my area. My choice was to hire a nanny. She was untrained by any institution in Canada, and in fact was from the Phillipines and barely spoke English. By the time my kids reached the age of 3, I had to enroll them into Montessori preschool in order for them to have the early childhood education I felt that their brilliant little minds required. That meant an additional $750 per month for 2.5 hours per day. Couldn't get rid of the nanny because I needed her for drop off and pick up since the school hours were in the middle of the day. With daycare costs of over $2800 per month, you might want to wonder how most women here do it. Granted my kids got better care because I spent the money, but funny that it had to come out of my disposable income when no other choices were available. Now in smaller towns I don't wonder that the daycare facilities that are available are not even remotely full. That is because there are many stay at home moms and easier to find one if you happen to be a working mom needing some help. In my neighbourhood, and amongst ALL of my friends I know not ONE stay at home mom. So my point exactly, is why would mom's in smaller towns who have easy access to inexpensive childcare and/or can also easily stay at home with their kids (and according to you, Betsy should be ).....get $100 per month, and in big cities like Vancouver where women are 1. choosing to go to work and 2. having no choice but to go to work, get the same sort of benefit ?? (in fact less because its taxable and we in the city are likely to be in a higher tax bracket) This is not an equitable system as far as I am concerned. And...oh Spike 22..... Women who are professionals who choose careers often pay more in taxes and therefore contribute to the economy, they are not a drag on the economy, and a little bit of these taxes that we pay being allocated to some sort of daycare or at least full daycare writeoff would be appropriate. I pay more in taxes annually than an average Canadian family (dual income) earns in wages. That is not including the taxes my company pays. I also employ 8 staff members and support their wages and their taxes and therefore am increasing the Canadian tax base. And you're saying I should stay at home?? I have normal healthy kids who are doing very well at school and have done a good job raising them with the help of my expensive daycare, and that is the program I will be sticking with. I just think that not getting the full writeoff is a bit of a piss off when the much of the rest of Canada is getting an allowance they may or may not even need. So in your case money rules. How I long for the good old days in the 1950's and 60's when the mother raised the children not strangers. Fortunately your family sounds like they are doing well thanks to expensive daycare - by all accounts you can easily afford it. Are you not the least bit guilty letting someone else do your and your significant others work raising the family? My wife and I sacrificed until all the kids were in school full time until we both resumed our regular work routines - if there is a will there is a way unfortunmately families come last nowdays and the almighty buck rules.

Harper to name Michael Wilson as Ambassador to U.S.
Spike22 replied to shoop's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You bring up a good point of irrational hate for Harper. I find that those people have the same irrational hate for the U.S. Wilson is a good pick, he served under Mulroney who had good relations with the U.S., something we need to work at these days. Wilson's credentiols and his low ikey style makes him a good choice. He definitely knows how to work in the background to get things accomplished. I am sure relations will improve with him in Washington. How could they get any worse...
