The times they are a-changin'! I know it's tough for you old conservative men -- but hey -- women are more educated, more aware these days. Why? Because we (most of us) are no longer under our husbands' control. More women than ever are becoming engineers and the like. It's taken many years to gain this equality in education. Wasn't very long ago that women were not considered persons under the law and were not allowed to own property, etc. So yah, it's going to take another generation or two before true equality has been reached. And I will continue to fight attitudes like yours that demean women.

The conservatives (and MacKay in particular) just can't seem to "get over it". She left Peter, she left the party. Move on.
-
So you support strong women? A woman who supports the Conservatives has a tendency to be led by her huband/father. So you support any woman who does not support the Conservatives. Now that is a principled stand! No, not at all. I respect women who think for themselves. If they choose to vote NDP, Green, Liberal or Conservative. So long as their vote is not dictated. So long as it is their decision. The sad part is that most conservative women only think they are thinking for themselves. They are actually only parrotting what they have been told. Poor brainwashed souls.

No it is about Harper and what he is going to do about this mess. It's about what he's NOT going to do -- he's NOT going to be running the country for long if he (and his minions) continue to insult 50% of the population. We know how conservatives feel about women. Argus have proven that.
-
Harper switching parties was mentioned only because the conservatives are (still!) on such a tirade about Belinda's crossing over. Harper was only mentioned because he was the high-profile conservative who has switched parties. IMO if it's ok to mention Belinda's crossing then it's ok to mention Harper's.
-
I have no respect for women who allow men to make their decisions (especially one as important as the party running the country) based on what they've been "told" rather than what they personally "glean" from thinking for themselves. How did I change the topic Ricki Bobbi?
-
In direct response to the justification of insults by conservatives -- "Belinda, the whore! She crossed the floor!" So yes, jdobbin was correct in bringing this in to the thread in this context.
-
The thread is not about Harper at all. The thread is about Mckay. Yet you trot out the old "YOU ARE ANTI-HARPER!" rant. Get over it. This isn't about Harper himself, it's about conservatives negative attitude toward women. Funny conservatives! -- if we say "we dislike GW" you assume we mean the entire American populace. When we say "we dislike conservative policy or attitude" you assume we mean the leader. Weird.

Drea, just in case you missed the question. Since you said that "Canadian women" will vote accordingly. Can you provide a scenario of even ONE female voter who supported the Conservatives in January who will switch their votes to the Liberals over this issue? If they voted Conservative they are either indifferent or leaning towards Peter MacKay over the ongoing spat between him and Belinda. This is a tempest in a teapot. The only women outraged by this are the one's who woud never vote Conservative anyways.... Maybe so -- conservative women do tend to be led by their husbands/fathers so you are probably correct. The women they will lose are the ones on the fence. The Liberals ARE the middle of the road party after all. Those women who are leaning towards voting conservatives because of their stand on crime, for example, may not vote for them now. This will result in lost votes for the conservatives.

All you conservatives keep this up. Not one single "other" person has mentioned that Harper is "scary". Why do you keep trotting it out when it means nothing? I am not "scared" of Harper. The chicken littles of the world are conservatives. Fearing terrorist attacks. Fearing gays. Fearing strong women. Fearing educating the populace. Fearing God. Conservatives are fearful creatures.

There's no doubt that Belinda Stronach and are others are milking this incident for all its worth. Like many moral pronouncements, they hide self-interest behind a so-called higher good. They're probably as surprised as anyone on how much mileage they're getting. But the Liberals are making a serious mistake here. They're playing the man, not the ball. The Democrats in the US have made the same mistake too. The scary, scary, extremist Harper meme doesn't work. This isn't about Harpers extremism or lack thereof. It's about the attitude of conservatives toward women. The lack of respect is appalling and Canadian women will vote accordingly.

I agree that we shouuld dump a lot of money into the program, though I disagree as to where it should go. It should go towards Liberal-friendly corporations, such as Power Corp., in the form of emissions-trading profits. No way! Haliburton should get the contract -- after all Haliburton must be the best at everything -- they are so successfully rebuilding Iraq so we should most definetly get them here in Canads to fix our global warming problem.

Peter needs to grow up. Belinda should've stated "Yes I am a bitch -- a bitch to watch out for!" With the music (I forget the band) I'm a bitch I'm a bitch and the bitch is back oh oh oooooh That would've been great! All in all I'm really glad this has happened. More women's votes for the Liberals comin' atcha!

Death Knell of Air America
Drea replied to sharkman's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Have you ever heard or read any of Coulter's comments? She is an extreme nutbar and of course her opinions would be attacked in Canada. She hates Canada. The Canadian public has no use for her tripe. I wish I would've gotten to see that! Dang I missed it. What station was this on? We do have more than the CBC. Why doesn't Can West give her a "platform"? Because the Canadian public would simply change the channel and Can West would lose viewers. I wasn't saying only conservatives are nutbars. Howard Stern is a nutbar from the other perspective. His nutty opinions don't fly in this country either. We are simply more level-headed and less emotional than the American public (in general). In America a person is either left or right, the issues are black or white. There is no middle of the road political views. In Canada, thankfully, we have perspectives from both sides AND the middle. There is no middle ground in George Bush's America. And you are correct -- Canadians are much more politically correct -- we don't like extreme opinions. We don't like to be pushed into the "yer either with us or against us" mentality. -
we wimin shood stay home and not worrie our prittie little heads about such important topiks as politiks. Us wimin shood stay home and cook dinner for our men. Or us wimin shood just vote like our men... after all men are so much wizer n strongr than we ar. Without our men we woodn't have a cloo as to how to vote. We'ed probably vote four the nalepolish party if it were left up to wimin by ourselfs. i gotta go groshery shopping tooday -- shood i ask hubby to drive me? i mite drive off the rode looking at my lipstik in the meer.

Ask any young man and you'll get the same glassy-eyed nod. Women, I believe (look it up), now outnumber men in post secondary education. Girls are also outperforming boys at both the elementary and highschool levels. What field are you in, btw? If you are surrounded by waitresses (for example) your experince with women would be different than if you work in law, finance or marketing. (No offense intended to waitresses, I was one for years -- before I got me my edukashun ) Perhaps you need to expand your sphere of influence...

Death Knell of Air America
Drea replied to sharkman's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Talk radio is not so popular here. There's less sensationalism in Canada. We respond to the level-headed talk show hosts or newscasters, rather than the emotional rantings of the American hosts. Nutbars abound on American radio and TV -- Rush Limbah, Howard Stern, O'Reilly, Coulter... These people are pure emotion. (I'd bet they all have high blood pressure ) They attack character and stifle debate. If one doesn't agree with their positon on any given issue -- the "host" launches into an insulting tirade. That just doesn't fly in Canada. -
What is your favorite thing about George w. Bush

Priest admits to abusing Foley
Drea replied to Ladyjen's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
The priest who alledgedly abused Foley is more than likely dead of old age. The dead can't refute what people say they did. -
If this is offensive to you, were you also offended by the Danish cartoon issue? You know -- the mocking of Islam? Or is it ok to mock muslims but not christians?

Now answer my question. How would you feel if your kids' identities were revealed publicly as part of a Ratzinger "investigation" if he decided to vigorously investigate? Uh... the identities of victims is NEVER made public. Why should it be? Face it -- the church is covering for perverts. Period. "Evidence can be kept secret for 10 years...." (until the victim is 28) I bet a million bucks that after 10 years the evidence will mysteriously disappear. -
Can we separate Morality from Religion? (Poll)
Drea replied to Electric Monk's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
You make it sound as though we make our kids eat off the floor and teach them to kill cats! I don’t need to fear a God in order to be moral. The conscience is the moral compass. You mistakenly assume that children raised in non-believing households are heathens. Not so. I do not believe schools should be responsible for teaching morals. They should teach academics and leave the morals to the parents. Generally speaking, children raised by non-believers are more open and tolerant of others. They are more open minded and are able to process information based on facts rather than emotions.
