But what if I decide to marry my girlfriend? What if I decided to smoke a joint (shoulda clarified that one!)? Currently when I smoke a doobie, I have no fear of government intervention. If there should ever be (God forbid!) a majority con gov't then they can (and will) run roughshod over our rights, just like the man down south.

Not according to real women. http://www.realwomenca.com/press.htm#09_26_06 Does "Real Women" NOT believe we should teach our children that they are equal? How could any mother say her children are not equal? That's just terrrible! My son is just as capable in the kitchen as any 13 year old girl! He's just as capable of cleaning up after himself, just as capable of taking care of himself. He is just as equal as any girl!!! -
You haven't read very many posts if you had you would know that I don't support the policies of the left wing. I actually support a good many conservative ideals. Personal responsibilty, etc. But when someone doesn't agree there you are " LEFTIST! LEFTIST!" "SKREEEEEE!" No, I'm not angry, I'm a very happy person. Why? Cause of all that wonderful Canadian freedom I have. The cons didn't change the govt one bit from Martins Liberals. They can't. Canadians won't stand for it. The anger comes from the righteous indignation of the rightwing. A centrist will debate -- a rightist (or leftist) will demand his view hold sway.

And what is that? Does Drea call herself a feminist? Sounds like one. If something is equal it is equal, it doesn't need millions of dollars and activist social engineering judges to make it so called equal. Our society (all the earth actually) has lived under a partriarchy. Women and children were chattel. Women were not considered persons under the law until less than 100 years ago. If something is equal its equal? Women have never been treated equally. Not even today -- we are working on it though. Your great grandchildren will wonder what kind of barbarians we were. They'll wonder why women were excluded from leadership postions. Because by then, 50% of the world's leaders will be women (let's hope). Because, in case you haven't noticed, women do make up 50% of the population. It does need social engineering. We need to teach our sons and daughters that no matter their gender, they can accomplish anything. For too many years a woman had value only if she were a virgin or a mother. Now, we see women starting to break that mold. Women who are not mothers, who are not virgins have societal value from what we can bring to the table, not only what we can provide for men. Sex and food. -
It sounds like you have developed some judgemental attitudes. I also live in B.C.'s bible belt. Not many vote for the subservience of women since it's not on the ballots anymore. But, and follow this carefully, some women expect big government to solve all of their challenges. That is the Liberal style government that wants to have a hand in every single part of our lives. The conservative model is generally to have smaller government where independent people prefer to handle more of their own lives. Does this include the freedom to with my body as I please? Marry who I please? Smoke what I please? I see the conservatives as wanting more government intervention, not less. I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Because without a husband a woman is utterly helpless. So she needs a "replacement". Do people not see that this attitude is antiquated. Thinking educated women have no "need" for a "dutiful" husband. On the same token, thinking, educated men have no need for a "dutiful" wife either. Let the poor uneducated saps marry each other -- the woman can't earn, the man can't cook. They need one another.

If I woulda called you Honey it would a been sexist ... but that's the double-standard of the left. (Besides I wouldn't make such a presumption without seeing a photo first.) As for the second part. To quote Homer Simpson "In case you dont' get it I was being sarcastic." But thanks for falling for it. You were not being sarcastic at all. Of course Bush doesn't bless Canada.... he truly does not realize that the USA does not go all the way to the north pole. God Bless! Who sneezed?

Where are you getting that from? What experience/research/study has shown that Conservative women only think they are thinking for themselves? Seems to be another example of the faux open-mindedness of the Canadian left. "Conservative women can't be thinking for themselves, because they wouldn't vote that way if they were really thinking for themelves." That appears to be the logic you are appling to this situation. Why would any woman vote for the subervience of women except if she were brainwashed? "Stick to yer knittin' yah Chow Chow Dog." What research? I live in BC's Bible Belt. I "research" it every day. In most every business situation I come across... Fortunately this is changing as the population grows.

MacKay screwed up. Just admit it. Now he's made a real mess of it. Tsk tsk tsk. You haven't been here long enough to be tired of anything. BTW, I've already proved that I am equal (no one said anything about being "better" than men... ). Women are still struggling with equality because of the backward thinking of some men. -
Honey, Bush doesn't even know where Canada IS, let alone bless it. What I meant (sighhhhh) is that GW Bush is known for saying "God Bless America" at the end of his speeches. Mr. Harper now says "God Bless Canada". If that aint copyin' I don't know what is.

Get with the program. Look at your calendar. It is 2006. Women have been sexually free for a while now. Do you know that women enjoy sex? That a man isn't the only one who has sex for the sake of the orgasm? That women like me have used men for sex, woke up the next day and never wanted to see him again. That we've dumped men based on lousy sex alone. Sweetheart men and women are equal in this day and age. I get the popsicle without paying a dime! -
And how do you feel about Emerson? Did he show contempt and a lack of loyalty? If you lived in his riding would you vote for him as a Conservative? What names would have been appropriate to call her in your view? Opportunist? Unprincipled? Disloyal? Deceitful? No problem. Certainly a far cry better than slut or whore. All of the words here are not sexist. They don't attack her gender, her womaness. So I would have considered them legitimate -- if they had have been used

It was not meant to be hateful and mean. I have ONE child. I will not be able to have another. My relationship with him I guard jealously.... well maybe not jealously... but NOTHING is more important to me. So, for the wife with no career, her husband and children are all she has. If my hubby decided to split, I would be a-okay. Would a stay at home mom and wife? No. So therefore she guards her husband jealously. Any women (especially those he works with daily) become suspect. Shopping around means finding the RIGHT mate. And yah, of course yah gotta try on the shoes before you buy them! -
The Canadian Conservatives are more likely to support US actions. They supported Isreal unabashedly -- called the response "measured". Conservatives are emotional. They need an "enemy" and are unable to look at issues from more than one point of view (theirs) -- just like the Republicans. "God Bless Canada" -- Harper is like the kid in school who copies the bully... he's not really a bully but he thinks he'd like to be. He thinks the bully is way cool. If you asked him though -- he'd deny it.

Well there is a big difference between men and women. Women are emotional creatures and can be very vindictive towards other women for various reasons I guess. My wife seemed to think that see screwed her way to were she is today. I would say there is reason to believe that by the way she has shopped her self around. Aha! Your wife was jealous. Shopped herself around? What does that mean? Your conservative wife is jealous of this educated, intelligent, articulate, good looking woman. Rightly so, considering you'd like to sleep with her. Maybe you called out "Bellliinda!" in your sleep one night I have never in my life been vindictive. Of course I was smart, like Belinda, and "shopped around" rather than desperately marrying the first man who paid attention to me. I've never had reason to be vindictive toward another woman -- I've never worried that my husband would want someone more intellectual to talk to (the sexretary syndrom) as have so many wives and mothers who have lost their "personhood" to marriage. You are all she's got so she guards it jealously. -
Death Knell of Air America
Drea replied to sharkman's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Ahhh, Sharkman, there's the rub. Who do these moderates vote for? They have 2 parties, not 3... Poor buggers in the states "either yer left or right, right or left, with us or against us. They have no way to vote in centrists! And Monk, that is a symptom of America. Americans are not stupid they know when they've been duped. They have been duped by GW Bush and his cronies. Marketing companies know this and take advantage of it. It has nothing to do with the tinfoil hat theory that the media has a leftwing bias. People sitting there watching TV, say to themselves "Hey, we're not the only ones who think Bush is a menace -- I'm gonna buy my laptop there!" If something is on televsion people believe there must be thousands of other people who agree with it. That's why everyone in America thinks everyone else is living like the Huxtables, while in actual fact most of them are living in trailer parks and have no jobs because their goverment sucks. (sorry for the dig, but gawwwd I'm tired of percieved superiority of the American right) A year ago, that same laptop was being promtoted as "the patriots choice". "For those who stand up for America!". Or that type of thing. It's all marketing. I'm on dialup so can't watch the snippet. I have watched Coulter on her own show. She is a radical. I've also watched O'Rielly and heard Limbah and Stern on their own shows. They are sensationalists that whip the American public into a frenzy. How, I don't know, maybe something is in the water down there. -

So what made your wife call her a slut then? Men have crossed the floor and never once have they ever been called a slut or whore. These are derogatory terms used exclusively to demean women. Calling a woman a "dog" or inferring that a woman is a "dog" demeans her. When a man says "She's a dog!" he certainly does not mean "what a hardworking woman." Calling a man a "dog" is different. A guy says "You Dawg!" to another guy -- means he's soo totally cool and has done something the guy #1 admires. Big difference. -

Why? Did Belinda screw a bunch of men? Was it reported in the news? Does your wife know Miss Stronach personally? Or was she simply parroting YOUR views? She wants to be a good li' wife afterall, and you gotta be a big strong leader kinda guy Hmmmmmm.... -
So we are in complete agreement regarding political policy. We just call ourselves different "names". You call yourself a conservative, while I call myself a liberal. I believe I am socially liberal (as you are) and economically conservative (as you are). So, two basically (politically, not socially) like-minded voters battle it out for supremacy -- we are battling for the same thing. It ain't the current crop of social Conservatives. The old PCs would get my vote if they were around today. Today's conservatives, for the most part, have aligned themselves with the US Republicans and by proxy, the religious right. I have no choice but to vote Liberal in today's political climate. With regard to women, we are not in agreement. Earlier you stated that there "must be a reason why women didn't have the vote". The only reason is that for the past few thousand years we have lived in a patriarcal society. Earlier you stated that you like women "chatting and flirting with them". "Chatting and flirting" is most definetly not the same as "respecting". You may like women, sure, but you have no respect for them as equal fellow human beings. You may have a great respect for your mother, but only in the sense of her motherhood, not her as a person.

Only from a rightwing view. The NDPers and other leftwingers would disagree with you. The word "liberal" in the USA means extreme leftwinger. The rightwing in Canada has taken this and ran with it. Liberals in Canada are the centrist party. Actually they are a tad to the right of centre. If we were on an acutal line it would look like this: Leftwing NDP, Marijuana Party and Green supporters -- Liberals -- Tories -- Rightwing Alliance type conservatives -- Christian Heritage Party. Liberals and Tories have much more in common than they realize I gotta go take my son to Cadets... would like to continue this later -- Argus it seems like you and I are making some headway! And we might even be on the same page after all!

Liberal Minister: "Where is your dog?" Referring to the dog he used, wasn't even his, during his interview after the breakup. MacKay: Pointing at the seat where Stronach used to sit "You've got her." Bob: "where's the beer?" Bill : "in the fridge" Is Bill referring to the beer? Or the fridge?
-
I agree with pretty much everything in your last post. But I am a liberal. Not a leftwinger. I don't believe in throwing money at everything and sticking my head in the sand. This however, does not make me a conservative. Economically conservative perhaps, but socially liberal. I believe in tougher sentences for criminals, less welfare, no govt money for special interest groups. I also beleive in affordable healthcare for all. Conservatives tend to make the mistake of lumping liberals and leftwingers in the same group.

Poorer? Lonelier? I am neither poor nor lonely. Like in the 50's and 60's. Yes exactly! There was no equality then. My mother would attest to that. The ONLY option she had to leave her father's home was to find a man to marry her. Honey, I ain't no victim. I am a very strong, independent liberal thinking educated woman. I made my life. No man made it for me. The He-Man Woman-Hates Club is looking for a president. You should run.

I have no respect for women who allow men to make their decisions (especially one as important as the party running the country) based on what they've been "told" rather than what they personally "glean" from thinking for themselves. And you think women who vote Conservative do that? The only two young women I now who vote the way they do because "daddy" did, both vote Liberal. Another frankly admits she doesn't follow politics and finds it boring, and votes Liberal because her husband does. Most of the other younger women don't bother to vote, though they tend to be dismissive of the Conservative Party. The women I know who do vote Conservative tend to be considerably tougher and less emotional than the others, with a personality which says "cut the bullshit" and a look to match. Have you ever been around a woman older than 30? You keep mentioning young women. Very few young people have any interest in politics whatsoever. It's a youth thang, not a woman thang. Conservative women tougher? So? Does one need to be "tough" to vote on an issue? Does it make me "tough" that I agree with Harper regarding crime and punishment in this country?
-
We all personally know some men who are complete idiots. (complidiots ) We all know personally some women who are also idiots. Trouble is, those who tend to vote conservative also tend to believe that women are "less" than men. Less educated, less intelligent, less logical, less able. In other words - conservatives tend to believe women are idiots. Conservative men and women believe that the man's opinions and ideals should hold sway.
