Or they could rewrite the legislation retroactively to get themselves off the hook. It worked for the gun registry, why not beheading ads?

Your paragraph on investment security reads a bit like a text book on how Western societies should treat it's investors - financial institutions holding your investments safely and profitably as a priority, fraudsters and criminals charged and sentenced, etc. The problem, of course, is it's all a pipe dream. Banks and investment houses too big to fail - and too big to be regulated - now operate with impunity without the slightest concern for investors or the society they function in.
-
The financial institutions and individuals responsible for 2008's financial meltdown that cost the public trillions, are still counting their profits - not prosecuted, not sentenced. How did this come pass? They own the gov't which should hold them accountable. All the high school social studies homilies you can conjure will not protect your investments.

Greece? Add about 4% to Harper's Numbers
Vancouver King replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Taking responsibility for their own gov'ts record is a problem for Conservatives I take it. After piling countless billions of additional borrowed money on the accumulated national debt, it becomes a bit galling to hear Conservatives counsel against borrowing funds - at near zero interest cost - to repair badly needed infrastructure and, most of all, to supply stimulus to counter a current recession of Conservative's own making. -

So says a supporter of a Conservative gov't that has accumulated tens of billions in additional debt despite being handed a surplus fiscal situation 9 years ago. What is it about recession you find so attractive? -

...and yesterday Harper made it clear no stimulus will be forthcoming - despite crumbling infrastructure across the country and record low costs of borrowing funds. -
No alliance, just an appreciation of the over-arching sentiment within the electorate - 7 in 10 voters want Harper gone.

Latest Abacus poll figures: NDP - 32 Cons -29 Libs - 27 Bloq - 6 Grns - 6 With exactly 100 days left until voting day, at some point all the bad news must take a toll on Conservative numbers.

Canadian dollars. Yesterday Chinese markets bounced back 6.5% due partly to gov't enforcing a buy now but no trade for 6 months regulation. Additionally, less-prosperous traders can now put up their homes equity to continue day trading. If this appears increasingly like a crap shoot supervised by clowns, pray this colossal circus doesn't side swipe Canadian interests. -
Today's bad news installment for Conservatives: (your choice) Economy sheds another 6,500 jobs in June as reported by Statistics Canada, Bloomberg suggests today Conservative budget is in deficit with IMF estimate of 1.5 % Canadian growth.

Apparently panic has broken out in Tory Assassination Central as the "Justin, he's just not ready" attack ads are just not working - Conservatives have lost 2 points since their launch. What worked on Ignatieff has so far failed on Trudeau.

Today's bad news installment for Conservatives: The IMF again slashes Canada's economic outlook, this time to 1.5%. The country's economy struggles to keep up with inflation.

Thanks, Pooch, good to see message is working. -
You have far too much faith in Harper's willingness to play by the rules.

So Greece's situation holds implications for Canada, eh? How about the $3 trillion wiped off Chinese stock markets in recent weeks. Does this mean less investment in overseas housing markets like Toronto and Vancouver? Does it confirm a major downturn in China's economy with direct implications for our resource exports? Lessons from Greece? As Argus would say, "small beer". -
In addition to those electoral woes, national events continue to conspire against Harper. Over the past few days reports have exports down $3.3 billion, national building permits in May down 15% ($6.6 billion), major banks proclaiming the "r" word, which will likely be confirmed a month before voting day. If there is any truth to the axiom that people vote with their wallets, Harper is in deep trouble. My growing fear is this: Faced with an impossible uphill campaign the Conservatives might "manufacture" a national security situation to capitalize on their only strong suit and stampede voters back into their tent. Does anyone doubt Conservative logic that such an incident would be in the service of the greater good?

I'm not sure you realize this - with fixed election dates the unofficial campaign begins far sooner than previously. We see parties rolling out attack ads in June, party leaders hold campaign-style meetings and excitement among opposition parties grows as Conservatives hover 12% behind last election. Welcome to the campaign.

I want to see an NDP attack ad involving Del Mastro scuffling alongside the police van in leg irons and cuffs and a voice over says: "this was Harper's parliamentary secretary and ethics spokesman. Had enough?"

Toronto Dominion Bank today became the second major Canadian bank to confirm what Main Street has known for months - Canada is in recession. Official confirmation will take place Sept 1st - 6 months of declining GDP. Can you imagine the political implication for the governing party? As a campaign weapon just 7 weeks out from Oct. 19th, the confirmed recession could very well be the death knell for Harper's Conservatives. -
If it is confirmed on Sept 1st we have 6 consecutive months of negative growth - in other words a formal recession - then this campaign is all but over.

Extrapolating Greek economic woes onto Canada's election campaign is beyond absurd. I will guess our own current Conservative recession is infinitely more important to Canadian voters. Let's give the author benefit of the doubt - he's pulling the forum's leg. -
From the July3, 2015, EKOS poll: "The NDP continues to hold on to a narrow but significant lead which would be more decisive save for the entry of Gilles Duceppe into the Quebec race."
-
NDP plateauing has nothing to do with Notley's honeymoon being over and everything to do with Giles Duceppe now at the helm of the Bloq. Don't take my word, read the poll analysis from the EKOS poll you referred to yesterday.

It appears the years have not been kind. Are you also investing in tin foil futures?
