The former house speaker retains his postition in the 39th parliment. Tell me how does this work, did Harper apoint him or does everyone in the house cast a vote to elect a speaker? If they do vote are they entitled to vote for whoever they want to no matter which party they are from? Just curious as to how they elect speakers.

Why do so many Canadians think our military is ...
politika replied to Hicksey's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I definalty think our military is better than that. And no I do not think the majority of Canadiangs believe this I think it is a minority of ignorant Canadians who do not have respect fo their country they live in. Lorrie Goldstein is ignorant and should not be a reporter, if she is bias. -
I would still post on this forum with my real name, I am open about my oppinion and, Nobody can question my oppinion as I have the right of free speech

What kind of military should Canada have
politika replied to Army Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Thank you for the figures. We may not have a large military but we CAN have a strong force with technology if we spent a lot more on it maybe cuting back a little bit on some stuff such as foreign aid and money we throw away to aboriginals who dont want to work. If our govenment was smart we can make hi tech weapons and sell them to the world and equip our forces with them to show the world what we are made of even if we are small. -
Here hope this one is better than my last one But just curious in the average age of the members posting in this forum.

Fine yeesh I will clutter the forum with another thread

I would be a conservative economit supporting big business in Canada Tax policy: Fine where it is people pay taxes to get free health, education etc. Environment: Find my own inititives to lower gren house gasses screw kyoto. Foreign policy: Focus on military aid ex. Cut funding to Africa untill our military can stabilize it from their corrupt governments. Also expanding our national interests, more military to fighting terrorism and tough against those who support or fund it. Social issues: keep everything the way it is, keep pot illegal and ban ssm I would make sure Canada's economy grew strong with a huge business sector and large military. I would increase military spending alot and keep everything else where it is, although tax may have to be raised to support more money toward a new budget.

What kind of military should Canada have
politika replied to Army Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
And what damn good would any of that do? Seriously: nukes? Why? Not saying we over load ourselves with nukes like the US but lets say 20 war heads would do us good, it would send a message to those who oppose western civilizations to back off. Thats what the US has done all these years and if a country pisses them off they go to war. Why cant we have a roll in the world leading a war like in Afganistan against terrorism? It would be possible if we had the technological capabilities and power. -
What kind of military should Canada have
politika replied to Army Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
We'll never match the US power for a few reasons. 1) They are 10 times bigger country, with a considerably higher GDP and disposible income per capita. 2) They run major deficits to pay for this military. 3) Most of their tax dollars go to the military, and all the other social institutions suffer. A strong military? Yes. On par with the Americans? Unneccessary. The key word in my statement was close We can cloely match their military by joining the USA, France, Britain and other NATO countries in the nuclear club. Along with more propaganda aimed at geting young recruits to join out forces and although we cannot get as much recruits becasue of our population we can focus on geting our forces the latest in hi tech equipment in the world, it could be like a new avero aero except without all the politics that led to its demise with it. Also how much is our GDP anyway just curious?, I would like to see what they make compared to us. -

A military is extremly important and is having more of effect what is goign on in the 21st century. I think Canada needs to spend billions on a new Canadian military machine one that is close or matches the power of the United States. I think Harper is the way to go for this new direction in our military's future. I believe by time he has left office he will have fixed or come pretty close to fixing our military's problem. -
I agree...I'm also 28...maybe a 26-40 and a 41-60 split would have made more sense. I mean, my dad is 55, and if we're in the same category, then your data is not telling you much. FTA That makes sense. I have to agree, sorry my mistake is their nayway I can fix that or am I stuck with it?

I am just curious as to how old our member are posting on this forum. It would be interesting to see the variety of the age ranges in this forum. For Example I would like to see if their is more youth posting on here than adults and vice versa. You do not have to tell me your age or anything, but it would be helpful if you could just chose an option in the poll. Thanks

SORRY, MR PRIME MINISTER, AFGHANISTAN IS NOT OUR WAR
politika replied to CHUCKMAN's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The US cannot be a war mongering country forever. We would KNOW that the war on terrorism does not stop with Iran either. Yes I did say Iran. The US government (mostly the CIA) IS a terrorist organization. I don't trust their faulty intelligence at all. Hell I don't even trust our intelligence community. There is no real world terrorist threat to the US. IF that was the case, alot more 'domestic terrorism' would be going on. But thanks to 9/11 the Patriot Act and the NSA helped to thwart other attacks. America is once again safe. The US will always be war mongering but thats their job I guess, I honestly have to admit I do not trust Bush either but he is not an evil terrorist liek the media iis saying. THe only reason people think he is an evil war monger is because he is fighting the war on terror they do the same to Gore if he was the president of the United States today. As for the CIA I trust them they are not going to lie in the name of the president. What is wrong with out inteligence community? CSIS is finding terror cells within Canada as the US CIA are in their country. THeir is mroe terrorism going on Mandrid bombings, Australian bomb, 911, and after the british transit bombings that really pissed the world off and now we are fighting a war. We are fighting a war it is no different from World War 2 We are fighting for freedom. What is it going to take for you people to realise that their is terorism goign on? When we Canada are attacked on our own soil. WE ARE FIGHTING THIS WAR TO PREVENT THAT! So this brings to the front of a 'perpetual war' no distinct enemy, no distinct location. This is dangerous ground, this can drag out forever, and when would you know that you are done?? So we don't know who they are? We don't know their location? Would you rather we sat back and did nothing, let the terrorists attack our home land gost? Thats what your saying, your saying just because this may not end and we dont know who they are we should just let them attack us. -

What rogue nation will launch a nuke at the US if the US withdraws from Afghanistan? Who the hell possibly has technology to hit the USA with a nuke? North Korea So North Korea will nuke the US if the US withdraws from Afghanistan? If you have watched the news lately you would no the war on terror doesn't stop at Afganistan. AFgainistan is just a minor country on the United States terror list. I am just saying if we end the war on terror which INCLUDES Afganistan than the countries we and the US pulls out of we will just see a new terrorist government which will commit terror activites on North American soil. I am saying a terririst attack was commited on North American soil and its are job to defend it no matter what the costs are. -

Well considerign the United States probably has millions more troops on their home soil to defend America probably does. It is Canada that needs to worry on how much soldiers we send out alhtough we need to we also need to worry about home defense. Also the United States porbably has the best inteligence in the world to defend themselves. -

What rogue nation will launch a nuke at the US if the US withdraws from Afghanistan? Who was in control before the american led invasion of Afganistan? Who was in control before the American lef invasion of Iraq Who the hell possibly has technology to hit the USA with a nuke? North Korea We have hit a few of these nations who have terrorist governments but what about the rest like North Korea? How come the United States government is very cafefull of how they are handling North Korea? THey are obviously worried Korea does have nukes or else on CNN US Marines would have alread landed on the North Korean Penisula. -

INDEED! The war on terror is not ridiculus, before we went into Afganistan their government was a terrorist government under the Taliban, they slaughtered thousands of people. ALthough we are talking about Afganistan another point to make is that if Americans had not have gone into Iraq Sadam Hussain would have still been commiting mass atrocities on his own people. Whether they are in their for oil or not they are getting rid of evil tyrants, oil is just a spoil of war, they won so they get it. Also their is an added bunus FREEDOM FOR WESTERN NATIONS TO FEEL SAFE FROM THIS TERROR S%$# -

politika replied to CHUCKMAN's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
What you people who oppose the war don't grasp, that what affects our biggest trading parner effects us. If the US were not involved in the war surly a rogue nation would launch a nuke at them and since most of our cities are by the border Canada would be in just as much danger. It is our war to not just because of this but because the United STates is our ally and when they call we have to answer and help them just liek they would do for us. Canada cannot be a country of peace forever -
I am proud that this operation went underway, it proves how Harper wants to save lives. I am simply trying to state tht a foolish decision was made by these people to go to Iraq to try and help out with peace (a lost cause) Now if they were physicaly taken from Canada to Iraq than me as PM I would send every resource I had to rescue them and Canadians would not be complaining about the cost as it would not be the hostages fault as he was nabbed within Canada.
-
I second that, this operation probably cost millions for Canada, labour costs (these commandos probably get paid hundreds of dolalrs an hour) Fuel for whatever transportation they used, weapons and gear, planning and inteligence information as long as extraction, this definatly cost us millions and should be paid back.
-
Thats a pretty good question, and interesting that you bring it up, But it is possible, and I am sure as time goes on we will have more information on what really went down this morning.
-
I concur they are the most equipped special forces in the world next to the Delta Force and the Special Airbourne Service (SAS) I think we have aproximatly 350 serving thats how good you have to be I guess. Meh some people will be upset but their was Canadians in desperate need and I would never leave a Canadian out in some war torn country heled by crazy terrorists to die. I just would not allow it.

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/20...role060323.html Hmmm but I like the part where it says: "Pentagon sources have told CBC News that Canadian special forces were involved, but it's not clear who took part or what their role may have been" So we played a part, I also like th eline where it says: "There have been reports that Canada's top secret commandos, Joint Task Force 2, had been working in Iraq. It's believed they worked in tandem with Britain's elite Special Air Service (SAS)." Reports but since when do we make up serious stuff like that? How come you guys do not think Canadians played a part in the release of the hostages? Harper is sure not denying it, nor is he conforming it for that matter for National Security reasons.

Is is it humane to take thousands of lives of innocent people? I did not think so, so why should we show mercy to people that have no mercy for us? I hope they lock them up and throw away the key, I am almost prone to say we shouldn't even make space for these animals in jail we should do them all off.
