  1. I think it all shows that Obama is the bigger man. He called it as he saw it, but Trump just made things up.
  2. IMO, Obama is still the much more genuine one.
  3. This is inaccurate. While it is true that supporters of Hilary Clinton “birthed” the birther conspiracy in 2008, it was soon taken over by the right, and then Trump took that baby and turned it into a big, hairy monster. He did what he did best – exploitation. Even after Obama released his original “long-form” birth certificate in 2011 (which Trump took credit for – saying he had done a great service to the country) – Trump continued to milk the monster. In 2012, he tweeted that he had an “extremely credible source” who told him the birth certificate was a fraud. In 2013, he raised suspicion about the death of a Hawaiian official who verified copies of Obama’s “birth certificate.” In 2014, he asked hackers to access Obama’s college records and check his “place of birth.” https://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-37391652 If racial tensions increased after Obama got elected, it was because of the simple fact that a Black man had gained the White House. If we look at American history, we’ll see that every gain ever made by Black Americans is followed by a White backlash. Blacks have historically been told to “know their place” - and faced consequences if stepping over it. It wasn’t that long ago that looking the wrong way at a White person would get a Black person lynched. “Black Success, White Backlash” is a well-known trope. From Jim Crow following the Civil war, to the White racial panic following Obama’s election. (And that panic powered Trump.)
  4. I watched the funeral of Jimmy Carter on television. One of the things that caught my imagination was the sight of Barack Obama and Donald Trump, head to head, talking and laughing together. We’re aware of the animosity between these two. The whole birther conspiracy, and Trump calling Obama “a disaster” and labelling him “ignorant” and the ‘founder of ISIS.” And as Obama campaigned for Harris, he labelled Trump a danger to America. These two have done nothing but politically tear each other down. So why the chummy interaction?
  5. You say that, but I know you don't mean it. I give you enough credit to know where I am coming from.
  6. Lol, Trump's lawyers say ... yeah, someone who I would listen to. The fact is that Trump tried to illegally turn over the 2020 election. He's a liar and a crook and the fact that he has just been elected boggles my mind. I am sure he was elected by people who get their info off of TikTok.
  7. I feel very, very strongly that I am a Canadian, and I feel very, very strongly about the differences between us and the US. We can never be absorbed into the US. Give me my toque! Give me my ability to laugh at myself! Give me all those good things like universal health care and progressive rights. Give me the ability to say, "Eh?" I want the letter U in my words like colour, honour and favourite. I want my milk in bags! If you don't understand what I am talking about, you were never a real Canadian.
  8. Of course not. Hate in any of its forms disturbs me greatly. But the subject of the hour is that Trump has just been elected president and his motivations are very dark indeed.
  9. I peg you, too. And this is the real problem, eh? As humans, we are governed by stimulus and response. if we're lucky, some growth lies between the stimulus and the response. But for some poor unfortunate souls, stimulus digs them deeper. This is your reality.
  10. This has nothing to do with this thread. Trump stokes hate. That's the point. Lol, that's your problem. But I do urge you to seek help.
  11. By whom? there's no evidence it was the left. You clearly did not read my post carefully enough.
  12. That's funny, because I have pegged you as one of the most hateful persons on this site.
  13. And my guess is that you don't even see that that is exactly what you are doing. I am concerned about the hate that Trump spreads. Now, try and stay focused on that. I have seen no evidence of left-wing hate presented. But back to my main point - Trump has torn the country apart.
  14. It's just that ... I wouldn't get my political news from TikTok!
  15. To what? Show the love?
  16. Um ... the Libs of TikTok are conservative influencers. Trump has even had the creators to Mar-a-Lago. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-hosts-conservative-influencers-libs-tik-tok-babylon-bee-dinner-rcna67396
  17. I was reading today about a war plan that the US drew up in 1930 - called the War Plan Red - to take Canada. It had as much to do with defeating Britain: The plan began with a three-prong attack by land and sea, starting with a naval blockade of Halifax, sending troop columns from Detroit and Albany to take Toronto and Montreal, from Bellingham to capture Vancouver, and from Boston to capture Halifax, while columns of troops marching from Albany and Vermont, and troops marching from Buffalo take over Niagara Falls, disabling the Canadian power grid. The troop movements were devised with the help of U.S. aviation hero, and later Nazi sympathizer, Charles Lindbergh, who flew secret recon missions behind enemy lines up to Canada’s Hudson Bay to suss out weak points. He recommended the use of chemical weapons... ... in 1935, Congress spent $57 million on an updated version of the plan, including the building of three “civilian airports” on the border with Canada. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/06/21/that-time-the-us-almost-went-to-war-with-canada-218881/
  18. Never said you were. Why did you think it was about you?
  19. This whole post is gaslighting. It doesn't address in any meaningful way the point raised in the OP. Did you learn this distraction technique from Trump? He excels at it.
  20. I'm not responsible for them Not according to the research. See my previous post
  21. I would say that the above is not true. Furthermore, I think the online adoration of Luigi Mangione (the CEO shooter) is a very different animal than what we see in MAGA. Most of the online reaction has focused on his looks. He’s been dubbed the “hot assassin.” Even Ted Bundy developed a cult following. Professor Tanya Horeck, an expert on digital culture and true crime from Anglia Ruskin University, says that the internet has caused "a blurring of the lines between celebrity and criminality” and that when people see a good-looking person pop into their feeds, their first thought is lust, not moral criticism. Also - this kind of online worship of violence is often seen on the right. If you go down the alt-right rabbit hole, you’ll find that on right-wing sites like 4chan and 8chan mass shootings are met with glee. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp8nk75vg81o I couldn’t find any evidence that those posting in favour of Mangione were either right or left-wing. The major motivation seems to be a hatred of the rich. For example, the hashtag #EatThe Rich soon went viral after the shooting. Clearly, some people are pissed off at corporate elites in general. But – aren’t right-wing people more likely to be anti-elite? The reality of American politics today is that the Republicans are the “populists” and the Democrats “the elitists.” That’s part of the reason they rejected Harris. I think, too, that an important distinction needs to be made here between the messages coming “from the top.” Democrat leaders do not embrace, glorify and endorse hatred and violence the way that Trump does. Josh Shapiro, the Democrat governor of Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested, said, "We do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint.” Compare that to Trump regularly calling for the execution of his political opponents. With a leader like that, it is not surprising that the research shows that online posts by the political right include higher levels of hate speech, threat, obscenity, name-calling, stereotyping, and negative prejudice, than do posts from the political left: In this study, we investigated the question of whether online prejudice is symmetrical or asymmetrical on the political left and right in the U.S. in a very large sample of social media messages. We observed that Twitter messages mentioning targets perceived as liberal or left-leaning (such as Black Americans and feminists) included higher levels of hate speech, threat, obscenity, name-calling, stereotyping, and negative prejudice, compared to Twitter messages mentioning targets perceived as conservative or right-leaning (such as conservatives and Christians). https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10724124/
  22. Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906 - 1945) was a German theologian and philosopher who became a fierce opponent of the Nazis. He worked for the resistance movement under cover of employment in Germany’s Military Intelligence Department, which in fact was a centre of the resistance. His involvement in a plot to overthrow Adolf Hitler led to his imprisonment and execution in 1945. As a witness to the goings-on in Germany in the 1930s, Bonhoeffer developed his “theory of stupidity” – that there is more to fear from stupid people than from evil people. Fighting stupidity is a lot more difficult than fighting evil because stupidity can be manipulated and used by evil. In Bonhoeffer’s words: Neither protests not the use of force accomplishes anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed—in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical—and when facts are irrefutable, they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. Stupidity coupled with power is a deadly combination. In fact, Bonhoeffer believed stupidity was worse than evil: Because evil people find it hard to take power, they need stupid people to do their work. Like sheep in a field, a stupid person can be guided, steered, and manipulated to do any number of things. Evil is a puppet master, and it loves nothing so much as the mindless puppets who enable it — be they in the general public or inside the corridors of power.
  23. Tacky is wearing socks with sandals, not calling for the destruction of an entire state.
  24. That includes with this disaster. Trump said Biden left him "NO MONEY IN FEMA." This is false. Biden signed a bill in December that replenished the fund. “The current balance of the Disaster Relief Fund is approximately $27 billion, Trump said that Newsom “refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way.” This is false. Newsom has never refused to sign a “water restoration declaration.” In fact, there is no such document, https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/09/politics/fact-check-trump-california-wildfires-fema/index.html Why is Trump doing this?
