  1. If anything, there needs to be more laws to protect children from hateful parents. Every child deserves a loving family. If parents don't accept their child, then there should be an out to be adopted. In time, not affirming will be viewed like hitting your child is now. If you look at the survey demographics, young women overwhelming accept LGBT. Meaning that in a generation, their views will be passed on and dated attitudes will die out.
  2. Most in Canada will support Ukraine indefinitely. They are a democracy that was attacked by an authoritarian regime. This sort of thing just doesn't stand to most in the West. At least to most sensible people that don't bootlick authoritarians. Wars often go much longer than people expect them to. It would not surprise me to see this one go 5-10 years. But I think Russia will crumble before that. They aren't fighting for their existence like in WW2.
  3. No proof that any minors were given puberty blockers without parental awareness. They get counselling for social transition which is not the same thing at all. Did you even read the article? Gotta say it's pretty funny how mad the right gets about things that aren't even happening. Because they wish for it to be true to rationalize and justify their personal aversions, even though it clearly isn't true
  4. It's just senseless rage farming. Nothing much has changed, 80% of Canadians or so still back supporting Ukraine. Seems about right compared to the USA levels of support, where we have a large Ukrainian disapora.
  5. I think it was more that Ukraine did not want to join NATO before 2014. And after then, they had disputed territory which precluded them from joining.
  6. The majority of Canadians support military aid to Ukraine too. The poll back in February had Canadian levels of support at 78% approval for decideds. And more people think we should be sending more support not less. Only in the CPC is there more of a divide. Yea Putin is just another Hitler. If he's not stopped at Ukraine he'll just keep going. Though the West made a huge mistake not getting Ukraine into NATO and cleaning up their corruption sooner. I guess we were kind of blind to what he was doing to his neighbors, not so different from 1930s Germany
  7. Children can already decide which parent they want to live with in custody cases. Their stated preference carries a lot of weight by the teen years. It's not absolute but judges do consider it as a factor. The Makayla case, I'm not sure about her capacity without knowing more. That she was Indigenous had a lot of influence on the case. It was just cited as an example. The law reflects the reality that teens are not the same as younger children. As we grow up capacity is gained. It's not like we hit 18 and magically are as mature as any adult. Anyways, it does cut both ways. Parents can't be responsible if they don't have agency. And they are not in the eyes of the law. So it seems like the issue really is about having control. Overall I do agree that it's unlikely that transition will go well without family help. But what's the school to do if the parents don't consent to a preferred name change? Just keep calling the child a name they despise, and go along with pushing them back in the closet? That's pretty disgusting to even think about. I think a lot of these policies aren't really thought out in terms of how they play out in reality. Whether it's ill-informed politicians or school board employees. Just as it's ridiculous to assume a child could transition at school only, so is the idea that parents should have this much agency. The Angus Reid poll did say that 20% of parents would not be supportive.
  8. See the case of Makayla Sault. The courts have already ruled that minors can refuse life-saving treatment if they are deemed to have the capacity to consent. Chemotherapy can be brutal and some people would rather just live out the time they have left
  9. Yea the so-called 'drug crisis' is mostly just mentally ill people that now have nowhere else to go. Asylums weren't perfect but at least they were better than being on the streets. This is a real worry of mine, that MAID becomes the go-to instead of a last resort
  10. Yea it's come up before re: cancer treatments. And minors can get abortions without parental consent, generally speaking. That's why I say there will be more of a middle ground in the end.
  11. Well dementia/Alzheimers are not considered mental illness re: MAID. It's a neurological disorder. But it's complicated just the same. Consent could still be withdrawn when not in a sound frame of mind. It seems that the more recent version does generally allow for this though, whereas previously you had to be in a sound frame of mind at the time of death. Meaning MAID had to be administered sooner than many would have liked
  12. Education policy is a separate issue. This is about trans kids just trying to be themselves. I'm not sure I understand the connection.
  13. Most Canadians were for MAID in its first iteration. Which was for people who were actually dying of horrible diseases. If you've had a family member die to dementia/Alzheimers it really changes your perspective. It's gone off the rails though unfortunately. Mental illness should not be a qualifier given the horrible ethical history of psychology. Being gay was once considered a mental illness. Being trans still is (kind of).
  14. I did say that I think WPATH is wrong about mastectomies being special at 16. Every other reassignment surgery is 18+. They probably argue something like that girls develop faster and breasts are a secondary sex characteristic. Though who knows for sure. There's never any rationale given for any of this stuff. Whether it's from WPATH, provincial health bodies, or even politicians. That's the scary thing, everyone just has an opinion but it's never based on medical science and trying to achieve good outcomes. It's based around what's popular...what's popular isn't always what's best. Remember just a generation ago gay marriage wasn't popular.
  15. You're right in that there's no easy way out. No political party wants to touch this political hot potato since the residential schools went so poorly. It's like the rest of Canada is traumatized too and that's part of the problem with being too past-focused on Indigenous policy. We need a here and now focus. What we are doing now is not working. They're in abject poverty in most areas. My family sends birthday items up North for kids, which is admirable, but also deplorable and embarrassing that it's like this in Canada. It's basically apartheid. We look down on South Africa from our ivory tower while doing the exact same thing. It's all baked into the Constitution which makes it really hard to unwind. Three levels of government (federal, senate, and provincial) all have to sign off. Forcing native communities to be more democratic to get funding might be one option. Though I'm not sure that would be enough. Many of these areas are just so remote that the cost of living is astronomical. And that remoteness was by design, we didn't want them living near our cities historically.
  16. More and more laws but remember they're 'small-c' conservatives (supposedly)
  17. Yea you have to sign a ton of waivers and paperwork even as an adult to get these types of surgeries. Surgeons understandably have to mitigate their risks to stay in business. Patients are made very aware of the risks involved. I doubt any surgeons in Canada go against WPATH standards (16+) due to liability. They can at least say they followed WPATH standards. I suspect there would be zero mastectomies done younger than 16 for reasons of being trans, but the article doesn't actually tell us the true story. Like most of these right moral-panic type articles they don't even have their facts straight before making an argument
  18. Unless you have cancer or are trans you aren't getting a mastectomy. You would get breast reduction surgery. They are different surgeries. That being said, your point is correct. They're including both here which is super disingenuous.
  19. 1% is incredibly low. It would be 1% regret rate for almost any surgery or medical procedure. But we aren't discussing ending those procedures. I will say the process of getting on the 'transition track' or whatever does need some reform. It's far too touchy-feely and not based on questions backed on scientific case studies. But that doesn't mean the whole thing needs to be banned. There are all sorts of less than perfect medical procedures that we still do. Why is trans medicine held to an impossible standard? I'd say it's because the right just isn't comfortable with the idea of it. And yes, it should be 18+ for transition surgeries but not for the reasons the right claims (like mental maturity). It should be 18+ because your body is still developing. Results are not as ideal if done too young.
  20. There will always be a segment of society that craves absolute authoritarianism. Don't forget Hitler was voted in. Though, when the center fails, more extreme governments are inevitable. If it wasn't fascism in Germany it would have been communism instead.
  21. Minors have many of the same Charter rights as adults. In fact the Charter was intended to protect those that can't vote from those that do. Whew, this is quite the thread. People talking about law that understand nothing of it. Just what they believe the law to be. In the end the courts will determine an age at which minors can determine their own name and gender. Like many other things (custody, medical care, driving a car etc). Contrary to the chud wing's wishes, children are not property of their parents and haven't been for a very long time under Canadian law
  22. I meant that it could at least be renamed without changing the substance of it
  23. NDP support has been the same as last election at 18%, so it's unlikely they do anything. Just wishful thinking. Very unlikely we have an election sooner. If the Liberals get a new leader they will take their time
  24. Also no proof of regret rates in the entire article, just speculations The right wants to assume that more harm is being done than good which is not the case What about the regret rates for those that didn't receive medical care soon enough in life? I don't think most people can imagine what a fake childhood feels like.
  25. I care more about the present and it's brutally sobering. Life expectancy for FN/Indigenous is 10-15 years lower than the general Canadian population. Are we really doing things that much better than in the past? I'd argue that we aren't. And that the whole system needs to be scrapped. I mean it's called the Indian Act... huge cringe that it's still called that in 2023
