  1. I don't see how unless you don't understand sarcasm. Yes exchange rates influence prices, that's been basically the BoC's main concern for the past 3 decades. Which rock have you lefty pseudo-economists been hiding under?
  2. More lefty pseudo-economics.. Exchange rates have no effect on consumer prices!
  3. Who needs rig pigs making 50-100k when we could restore a laughable textiles industry with employees making 20k!?!? Whatever jobs are lost in ON are more than made up for by oil industry (and spin-off) employee's tax dollars being funneled to have not provinces. Also much of the finance industry in Canada is built around financing oil companies, and the TSX-V is an exchange primarily built around resource industries. Furthermore, a stronger dollar lowers consumer prices... An iPhone, or 40in hdtv would cost $800 in Canada with a weak dollar instead of $500. A new car would cost 30k instead of 20k. But don't let facts get in the way of a good left-wing pseudo-economics circle jerk.
  4. Dre you seem to be missing an important factor: People will be pissed if prices continue increase by more than their after tax[/] real income. The price increases wouldn't be so annoying if 20-40% of our real income wasn't going to the government. The real problem is that our liberal governments gave away so many services for free and subsidized the pricing of other products/services. Now that the credit card is getting tapped, the government can't afford these handouts/subsidies anymore and the people greedily want their entitlements. It would be no different if you had a million dollar credit card and treated your children like royalty, then maxed your credit card and had to raise your teenage kids on a 50k salary. They'd be "rioting" for their yachts and penthouse condos and beemers.
  5. Why do I even bother...
  6. Not necessarily. If someone lives 90yrs, we can probably assume the first 20-25yrs they are being supported by their parents. They may only need "full income" for the 25yrs that they support their own kids, but they work 30yrs. Then they may retire making 70% of "full income". If this were the standard case, then a 35yr retirement would require 35x0.7 = 24.5yrs salary, or 24.5/65 = 37.6% tax. Now the question is, do we want the state to take almost 40% of our income to ensure everyone retires comfortably? Does taxing at that level (keep in mind additional taxes would be required for other services) reduce the size of "the pie"? Do we want the state to tuck us in at night and sing us lullabies? Many people would say no, yes, no, and it certainly isn't fair for a "freedom loving" nation to impose such a heavy tax on people who do not support it. One thing I will admit about conservatives is that we love our freedom. Freedom to succeed and freedom to fail come hand in hand.
  7. Btw this is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read. US nonfarm payrolls is the most traded economic indicator in the world. If it is bad then capital markets around the world plunge.
  8. Really? I'm sure you have proof to back this claim? With the CAD still near historical highs and above par with the USD, surely our exports are not particularly attractive. US personal spending has missed expectations in 3 of the last 4 months. Doesn't sound like they're buying that much. US vehicle sales fell short of expectations. Factory orders decreased by 1.5%. The S&P500 is falling. Yes everything is just peachy in the US right now. Let's all thank Obama for helping us create these jobs!
  9. US jobs numbers were far below expectations last month. They barely created twice as many jobs as Canada in an economy that is ten times larger and has yet to recover to pre-recession levels of employment. Nice try Debbie Downer.
  10. Is it really surprising that manitoba, ns, and on lost jobs? Two ndp governments and Dalton? Is it really surprising that sask, ab gained jobs? Two conservative party governments?
  11. Yes people seem to be missing the point. You weren't saying that public sector jobs are bad (although I would argue that the marginal 20k jobs being cut would be bad were it not for unionization), but that private sector jobs are more desirable to an economy. That is not debatable, it is a fact that public sector jobs could not even exist without private taxpayers funding them, and that more private sector and less public sector jobs improves the prospects for balancing the budget.
  12. Of course losing 20k public sector jobs is good in the context of these numbers. It means 78k private sector jobs were created. 78k more jobs contributing to the public purse (or reducing costs to the public purse), instead of 20k jobs suckling on the teat of private sector taxpayers.
  13. Oil extraction, refinement and delivery. Cup and soap manufacturing and delivery. Delivery to customer. Customer might be a warehouse, then delivered to a store. Customer might be a store and delivered direct. Wash cup with water and soap before drinking "free" tap water. Washing might occur in a washing machine which uses lots of water and energy.
  14. How about the pipes in people's homes being a factor? If you live in an older home, you probably have worse pipes than even a Dasani or Aquafina bottling plant. There's a video of Dasani's purification process here: http://www.dasani.com/#/about-purification I can tell you that it looks a lot more sophisticated than my tap... and I'm sure the pipes are far better maintained. Furthermore, buying bottled water means you don't have to waste time and effort washing cups.
  15. Why do you guys keep bringing up China as if I was suggesting an invasion is imminent? I was clearly playing along with Gosthack's hypotheticals. I am a capitalist... I support free trade with China. Get that through your heads! Furthermore, the right in Canada is not paranoid about China. In fact, the right is trying desperately to construct a pipeline to ship oil to China. Judging by the posts in this thread, that "paranoia" is an illusion borne from the left's lack of reading comprehension. Now lefties, get your thinking caps on and let us all review my post: Note how I said "if you're going to use ridiculous hypotheticals". That ridiculous hypothetical is the following: Presumably GostHacked was referring to China when he was saying the F35s "won't stand a change against the multitude of Chinese made J-20s", unless there is another superpower threat I'm not aware of that could significantly overpower our F35 fleet with J-20s. Now lefties, try to put 2 and 2 together here for once in your lives. Gosthacked brings up the hypothetical situation where our f35s are overpowered by multitudes of J20s, then I say that this is a ridiculous hypothetical. Conclusion??? I must fear an imminent Chinese invasion!!! I hope that clarifies things for you lefties. Now keep the feigned outrage and comedic overreactions coming!
  16. We've angered global warming!!! Repent damn you!! Repent!! The four glaciers of the apocalypse are coming!! Heed the words of the globe: Thou shalt not support oil exploration and development. Thou shalt not not drive a hybrid. Thou shalt not publish the works of contrarian scientists. Etc.
  17. Yes really! That's why we need to wait to buy Chinese j20s instead of f35s! 80 j20s will fare much better against thousands of enemy j20s than 65 f35s will! I know it's hard to keep up with ghosthack's (or any other lefty's) deeply flawed logic!
  18. You really think we'd only have 65 f35s in the case of a war with China? If you're going to use ridiculous hypotheticals to make your argument then I can use another ridiculous hypothetical: in the case of a war with China we'd buy hundreds more f35s. Furthermore, if 65 f35s won't stand a chance against China, do you think 80-100 j20s will (assuming the j20 is up to 50% cheaper)?
  19. That is true but I was trying to compare assets with reasonably similar risk profiles... that's why I mentioned a diversified portfolio.
  20. I'm sure the conservatives are absolutely terrified of a "desperate measure" by the opposition considering the last one gave them a majority!
  21. Giving junk to junkies? We already have two threads about the quebec free tuition junkies!
  22. At this point the offer should be get back out of the streets or it's rubber bullets, tear gas, and expulsion from school. What kind of protest is this any way? It's akin to a group of welfare recipients rioting for more money. Protests used to be about governments killing and oppressing people, now they're about not giving out enough handouts.
  23. Doesn't matter what protests are "supposed" to be. If me and my fellow protesters want the right to carry concealed firearms, we shouldn't go block traffic and throw feces at cops because it is inconvenient and will make the news. As I said, the right to protest does not supersede other people's rights. If a protest is popular enough, it will be inconvenient by nature.
  24. Fletch is a great example of why Ontario is falling apart while other lower tax provinces are booming. Enjoy getting out of Dalton's hellhole Fletch, I wish I could go with you!
