The "growth economy" is not sustainable.
jacee replied to jacee's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Ah Yes ... make money for the bosses ... in the growth economy built for them. But it doesn't work for us. What kind of economy works for all of us? -

yes I am not worried about the survival of the earth but of us. The blip that we are has given mother earth a bad case of indigestion and she may purge us to cleanse herself. But assuming that isn't imminent ... is there an alternative to the 'growth economy' model so we can live here sustainably? Is human life on earth self limiting because we are dependent on growth? OR ... is that just a bad economic model? -

Ah yes ... that'll save the world. Ya we should cut costs by firing all the economists except the ones who have no better ideas than "grow it". -

This is a direct challenge to the economists, financiers, industrialists and business community to explain why it all depends on continued "growthgrowthgrowth" forever and ever. As an economic theory that has driven policy and practice in the past, maybe ... but it makes absolutely no. sense to me NOW as we know it is a impossibility. The earth is getting tired, overworked, worn out, depleted of what we've narcissistically called 'resources', that are in fact the earth's survival systems. Example - gravel: We dig it out relentlessly, paying no attention to the fact that it is necessary to filter and clean and purify the groundwater, rivers lakes and streams of fresh water that the earth provides for our survival. In Southern Ontario, a predatory company purchased several thousand acres over the years, ostensibly for a huge soybean farm. However now they have revealed that their real intent is to build a huge open pit gravel mine. The property is gravel moraine, critical to all of the water systems of S Ont. That's just one example of the unsustainable 'growth economy' that ultimately cannot sustain human life. WE CANNOT EAT OR DRINK MONEY. What happens to the growth economy when the people are gone? Do the economists have any ideas for an economy that sustains human life here on earth? Do they comprehend the collision course we are on? Do they have any different ideas? We cannot continue to blindly believe the moneybags like our parents were brainwashed to, when we know it isn't our interests but their own they pursue and they are driving us to a precipice from which there is no return. What else does the financial/economist mentality have to offer us that is viable theory and practice for the future? OR ... should we just ignore them? Stop them? Somehow create our own economy that is not dependent on depletion of the earth? ??

Now Saskatchewan wants to separate? Lol. It does get ridiculous when people start overreacting so hilariously to Quebec's differences. C'est la vie ... this is Canada ... a test of national biculturalism ... and it seems to me the west is failing miserably. However the non-Quebec East is culpable too for not consistently letting Quebecers know how important they are to Canada. All they hear are the angry loud voices of the western uniculturists. It was a surprise to them that so many Anglo and Allophones hopped onto buses to go to Quebec to say "We want Quebec IN" during the last referendum. It shouldn't be that way. They should always know that the majority of Canadians feel "My Canada includes Quebec". The business of Nycole Turmel is a tempest in a teapot. Of course there are former Bloc members and/or separatists in Parliament. That's where we want them. The donut heads who scream about it have a very limited understanding of how learning, cooperation and progress occur. Quebec is a challenge ... but that's Canada! LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!! LOL

I read the links. No mention that he's a drug dealer, and the bullet that hit the police officer was police issue. Seems some here are speculating beyond information presented. Doesn't justify the burning and looting tho. But the rich getting richer and the poor poorer is the gnawing problem.

Toronto G20 - 1 hour property rampage, no assaults - 1000 people arrested. London - 3 day rampage including assaults on police and gas firebombs - 215 people arrested Gee ... think the Toronto cops overreacted just a bit?
-
yes that's right - everyone is out to get you, but maybe it's not because you are white?
-
No he has no power, not even over himself. But on average, white males do hold the bulk of political and economic clout.
-
I'm not in favour of inciting hatred against any people or person nor even animals though there are some insects I feel we could do without. TimG made the point that white hetero males are not protected by law in Canada and at this point he's right: There haven't been any successful cases yet. WHM's hold a bigger share of the wealth, power and jobs than their numbers warrant as they are in fact a minority of the population. Doesn't mean some of them aren't having a hard go of it. Is it BECAUSE they are WHM's? Not proven yet to my knowledge. It's true some opportunities are denied to individuals because it's necessary to reapportion wealth/jobs/power to match demographics or job requirements (languages, cultural understanding, etc. It may yet be successfully argued in court, but not yet. Racial, cultural and gender biases have long favoured WHM's. It's an issue in flux.

Actually religion and thus Christians are protected. As the dominant group with most of the power in this country, white hetero males are not. But when we bring the revolution to your gates, you will then be freed to access the Human rights council. I promise.

The last paragraph of the link explains that others were protesting legally outside the 170 metre limit. Linda Gibbons seems intent on being arrested, for publicity for the cause I suppose?

'politically correct' is just a derogatory term invented by mean spirited cons to denigrate common decency and kindness toward those different than yourself. Its use betrays a rather pathetic insecure, angry spirit intent on destruction of society and self ... in my opinion, of course. It appears that you didn't comprehend my point that the reason Europeans 'explored' the Americas was to make money from its resources, yes, and to find a place to dump all of us peasants that they had kicked off our land so they could make money off it instead of us living off the common land. The natives never explored Europe because they knew that barbarians lived there, with gory practices like parading peasants heads on spikes when they couldn't pay the taxes demanded by the lairds.

A mosaic of different colours and cultures is exactly what we were promised. People have always been free to live as they choose - Mennonites for example, but also almost every new group arriving in numbers has lived close - Italians, Portuguese, Chinese, Irish, Greeks, Jews, (East)Indians, etc. Why shouldn't Arabs, Muslims, Somalis, Tamils, etc? Why complain about them doing the same thing immigrants to Canada have always done?
-
A douche. A civil response, in a democracy or otherwise, would have been to to say "Sorry ... didn't realize ... won't take your pic anymore." Sometimes common decency and respect, once informed of objections, is more likely to resolve a situation than law. I saw a man in a public playground taking pictures of children. I told the creep to stop and I followed him until he left the park. One's legal right to photo anyone in a public place is NOT the only critical factor. Sometimes one has to use human judgement.

I'll leave those decisions to the professionals who do the work. If it saves a child from being born with AIDS, I'm for it. Many people become addicts because of chronic pain, including former athletes. For others it's the chronic emotional pain from childhood abuse. If you are not walking in their shoes you can't know. I see them all the time, and I'm just glad I'm not one of them.

Do religious people have a right to push their faith at others?
jacee replied to scouterjim's topic in Religion & Politics
If there is no public justice, some people might go ballistic. Scary thoughts Chippewa, and actions that would do more damage to yourself than anyone else ever did. -
The future of Canadian/American Relations
jacee replied to JAmotue's topic in Canada / United States Relations
My perception is that Harper has damaged Canada's international diplomatic strength with his inflexible approach. Kind of the opposite of what you are saying. On the larger issue of a possible tumultuous change to the south ... we Canadians know we sit on a wealth of desirable natural resources including water and we are vulnerable to the south. However, we can only hope that diplomacy and respect continues between our two nations, more like extended family than just neighbours. -

So Betsy what is your answer to the thread question? Do people have the right to push their religion on others? Eg, Christians forcing native children to practice Christianity? Another question you haven't answered is whether you agree that the church perpetrators of violence and sexual abuse against native children in the residential schools should be brought to justice' as the Nazi perpetrators of the Jewish holocaust were/are? You waffled on that, seemed to say Chippewa and others should just let it go, get over it, move on, pull themselves up by their bootstraps, etc etc and leave the church perps alone. Is that what you meant? Um ... because it's important. Pope Ratzinger, for example, was the top doggie perp who wrote and enforced the church regulations about how sex perv perp priests are to be protected, hidden and their crimes covered up, evading justice. The Anglican and United churches likewise have evaded efforts to identify perps. The Catholic perps of course may have confessed their sins and been absolved by the church. About your 'church as victim' comment ... ewwwwww! I think you need to rethink who your God is ... is it the church corporation? Just who are you protecting? God needs no protection from justice. The churches, however, are criminals while they still protect their employee perp criminals. -
What data are you citing? I repeat that the crime rate is falling predictably because the population bulge of baby boomers is past their prime crime ages.I'm suspicious of the supposed high rates of "unreported crimes" because the sample is only victims and you cannot extrapolate from them to the whole population as some are likely to be more vulnerable to crime - prostitutes and clerks in all night convenience stores for example. That and we have no comparable data from the sixties. I think the real problem is the Alberta crime rate and fear of the wealthy oilmen, Harper,s funders. Nothing that's proposed federally will solve that unique provincial problem though, but clearly whatever conservative Alberta is doing isn't working, Bob.

"Whites to attain minority status" In the wake of the Oslo atrocity, I sincerely wish this creepy and inflammatory thread would just disappear.

I notice in your signature - "black countries for blacks" etc. that you didn't say 'Aboriginal countries for Aboriginals". Lol North America was never a 'white' country. It was the country of millions of Indigenous people and there were African slaves brought in even before there was any significant white colonization. In Canada Chinese labourers were critically important in building the railroad and the nation. If you are looking for a "white country for whites", you'll have to look somewhere other than America.
