  1. Then there's again the dilemma posed by the op The growth economy is not sustainable.
  2. Shouldn't we be focusing on wealth and assets as well as income? And let's face it, the only stats we'll ever find will be for reported wealth, assets and income. Much of the transfer of public wealth and assets to the superrich from the rest of us may not even be visible to the naked eye. It's somewhat surprising that we can see it at all.
  3. A middle class rapidly shrinking as capital is transferred to and hoarded by the wealthiest 1 percent 'offshore' untaxed. Mission complete. But what was the mission? (Great discussion btw)
  4. OR ... we could obey the law of the treaties and make sure that they are adeqately compensated for all uses of their traditional lands, as the Supreme Court has ruled. AND ... we could stop the ignorant insults.
  5. And by "destruction" you mean disruption of the event? Protest is itself an exercise of freedom of speech. We all have that freedom, not just those paid to speak at a microphone.
  6. I always feel that there is something of interest intended by your pithy one line posts ... but I never quite get what you mean.
  7. It doesn't matter what he did before. It's a war crime to shoot a prisoner, even if you don't like what he's saying.
  8. As protest strategies go, though, it's a lot more desirable than bombing.
  9. I don't know. That's an issue for the Israeli people to decide. Aggression against the people of Gaza is the problem, as I see it. I do understand that there are issues on both sides, but I think the bombing of Gaza was aggression of an intensity that shocked the world. Clearly the fallout is still reverberating. One can only hope that current negotiations will improve the situation for all concerned.
  10. The protesters were very successful in getting international media attention, and hopefully media attention in Israel as well. The Israeli people need to be aware that their aggression against the people of Gaza is not viewed sympathetically by the rest of the world, because only they can change their government. If protests didn't disrupt some peoples' comfort, they wouldn't bring about any change. The purpose of protest is to disturb people, to make them think about the issues and to take what actions they can, including educating themselves. I used to agree with you but the fact is that active goal directed protest by a few is much more productive than many people quietly holding a sign in 'the designated protest area'.
  11. Mr.Canada I read Michael Hardner's comment s about you being prejudiced against Muslims, and your response asking him and others not to call you those names. Clearly you do care (where some bigots don't). So I searched and read some of your posts including this first one in this thread. I can see where Michael Hardner might have come to that conclusion. Can you?The discussion is about headscarves as a possible safety issue. It isn't about face coverings. Your mention of face coverings and 'political correctness out of context easily leads one to believe that you are prejudiced against all Muslims. I hope you can understand that it is yourself - your own posts I that lead to the perception that you are prejudiced, that you hate Muslims. Another poster said your use of the name 'Mr Canada -' bothers him because your apparent biases are against what Canada is about. I have to agree. However, it is also apparent to me that you don't want to be seen the way you are portraying yourself. Perhaps if you are more careful in the way you express yourself, you won't be seen in a way that disturbs you. We all know that all Muslims are not terrorists. I think we all know that only some extremist Islamist sects practice extreme violence against women. Perhaps if you keep that in mind when composing your posts, we won,t see you as the bigot you appear to be when you generalize those things to all Muslims, especially those who have come to Canada seeking religious freedom, peace and safety.
  12. Cite please? All I found was a reference to "headgear".
  13. Very well said.We are brainwashed by business, industry and their pet politicians to believe we should just leave everything in their 'capable' hands as they know what they're doing. However it's becoming increasingly apparent that they are only "doing" for themselves. The health and well-being of the people and of the country itself is of no concern to them at all. Your point is well-taken: What happens when the middle class no longer exists and all taxes have to come from the rich! Clearly they have not thought this through at all. Just as clearly, they are not acting with a plan at all, just a dog-eat-dog mentality focused by greed. Actually, they're not even as smart as dogs: When there's plenty to go around, dogs don't fight to hoard more for themselves; They all eat!
  14. Are you joking? You think the poor are "flourishing" because there are many more of them now? Right. The data presented show the opposite of what you claimed earlier: Wealth is being taken from the middle class and given to the rich, resulting in more people living in poverty.
  15. Women often wear scarves around their necks as part of an outfit, but the ban is not on scarves per se but "headgear". I'm curious. ... do they ban ball caps or just headscarves? Neck scarves or just headscarves? I suspect this is more about racism than safety.
  16. 1) Show me evidence of the poor "flourishing". 2) Show me evidence of the rich being "punished". 3) Show me the rock you've been living under. 4) Show me what $2b per year in corporate welfare has done for the poor.
  17. And the courts interpret and apply them to today ... which they do.
  18. /thread drift.These protesters were successful.
  19. Correction: Intense dislike of Israeli aggression, as do many Jews.
  20. http://www.eveoftheapoc.com.au/Downloads/TheFatalTrap.htm Some food for thought ... and here: http://www.eveoftheapoc.com.au/Downloads/DebtVsGrowth.html And ... Well now that I've learned something I feel better. We have about 9 years before collapse.
  21. Not sure why anyone would think the NDP would want to hitch their horse to a falling star!
  22. They did get counted when they voted on whether to take a vote on the contract and they were a minority I not even close. Yes the local corporate lackey media gave them lots of airtime and support but they didn't have the numbers to matter.http://www.thespec.com/news/article/573189--local-1005-backs-their-leadership "Fewer than 30 members voted‘no’ to a resolution asking if they supported the committee" We agree there.
  23. International laws and courts exist with Canada's Support and agreement. It's highly unlikely that Canada would act in the ways you suggest. Aboriginal rights are fact ... and law in Canada and internationally. . Love it or leave it!
  24. They certainly got the publicity! They also put the Israeli government on notice that their aggression has consequences for all international ventures, including cultural. All in all, a very successful protest, meaning there will be more of similar nature. Too bad they didn't think to bikelock themselves together to prevent their removal by security. "Yammerheads" ... would be anybody who exercises freedom of speech?
