  1. Here are the 2004 Senate results. Are they correct? What I believe we have to find out now is which Senate seats are up for renewal in 2006. Does anyone know? So if I understand correctly, the current standings in the Senate are: Rep - 55 seats Dem - 44 seats Ind - 1 seat Total 100 seats
  2. Not too many Canadians want an election soon, it appears. I wonder why. Maybe this idea of minority government is finally rubbing off on the voters.
  3. Dear err Re: Question 1 Yes in the real world, at the moment, it is a long shot that the NDP will get elected as government, so ideally for the NDP is another Liberal minority government supported by the NDP. But if NDP supporters had to chose between A & B which would it be? Myself I would chose B, but I am just curious what other NDP supporters here think if their only options were limited to A & B. Cheers
  4. Dear ironside I believe the only way that is going to happen and apparently it is a long shot, at least at the moment, is for the Democrats to regain control of Congress. Do you know the actual impeachment details, votes required, etc., and so what if Bush is impeached, as didn't Clinton get impeached, but stayed on as President? What kind of punishment is that? What was the difference between Nixon's situation, did he just resign, was he impeached, Ford pardonned him didn't he, or what happened there, with the silliness of the, so he likes women, Clinton situation? Careful what you ask for though, do you really want Cheney as prez? Cheers
  5. Question 1 Preamble Some NDP supporters are so frightened by the Conservatives that they prefer to have a Liberal majority as opposed to a Conservative minority. Question Within the realm of election result possibilities, of these two options, which is the best case scenario for the NDP in the next election? A Liberal majority B Conservative minority Question 2. Preamble The NDP was successful in getting part of their progressive agenda adopted by supporting the Liberals in the Spring. However in the past the NDP has supported the Liberals only to have the Liberals obtain a majority government in the following election. Question For their future success, what is the best strategy for the NDP this Fall? A Arrange to support the Liberals in exchange for legislating certain NDP policies B Join with the Bloc and the Conservatives to defeat the government
  6. These supportive comments about Mulroney, you're joking right. It is important to have a sense of humour.
  7. I think a lot of the underlying reason that some folks are not supportive of the CBC is because of their slant covering political news. And I think they have a valid criticism, as from my observations the CBC political news area seems to be wedded to the Liberals. I think they need to do some improvements in that area. The CBC does though have a mandate. At one time I believe national unity was part of that mandate, but I am not sure if it is any longer the case. Also the Hinterlands as kimmy would say, and that Sparhawk mentioned, need a connection to our Canadian mosiac. As Toro had as his signature for a while, "Canada is a country, not a sector", so you cannot always treat it like a balance sheet item. But I am sure if you ask a lot of the people who say they do not like the CBC, they will tell you they enjoy "Hockey Nite in Canada" with Don Cherry.
  8. Dear cc Oh me, oh my, what in the world does that have to do with anything? How many people in Conservative Premier Grant Devine's cabinet/party went to prison? I'm sure just because of those criminals you would not want everybody to think all Tories are crooks, would you? I don't think that. Cheers
  9. Where in the world are people getting the idea that this is for Toronto only? All major cities in Canada are going to get what Toronto got in proportion to their population for their public transit.
  10. Dear mirror, Are you for real? This has nothing to do with tax reductions for the rich or being soft on social programs. This has to do with the FEDERAL government funding CITY transit. Do you ever stop and ask the question, "who should fund this?" It would seem your answer to that question everytime is "everyone in Canada". Do you believe we should get rid of provincial and municipal governments? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Dear Cybercoma Yes t does have to do with tax reductions for the rich. You are just using a smokescreen. It doesn't sound like you have ever heard of the expression the "common good". What happened in New Orleans is the result of politicians neglected the common good. You are too caught up in whose turf it is rather than trying to provides services for the people. Personally I think we are overgoverned and that there really is no need for provincial governments, as they spend way too much time pitting their part of the country against another part instead of working together for all Canadians. What makes you think the cities in Alberta or wherever are not getting any funding for public transit? I don't live in Toronto but I am delighted the people in Toronto will have good public transit. I wish it for the cities in Alberta as well. Cheers
  11. Dear cybercoma If you want tax reductions for the rich and policies that are soft on social programs and the Charter of Rights, don't vote for the New Democrats. I don't think there should be a charge for public transit. Then you will really see people get out of their cars with substantially reduced traffic and also it would help with Canada's environmental and pollution problems. You sound like a lobbyist for the auto industy. Cheers
  12. Dear CES Once again instead of your constant personal putdowns, please try posting something, anything, that has substance to it. Thanks. Cheers
  13. Link If I understand correctly the damaging Gomery report is the one coming out Nov 1. According to pollsters if we an election this fall the Liberals will be hurt. If the election is delayed the Tories will be hurt. And the reality is that the NDP will decide the date of the next election. Just guess who is going have a lot of power in the house this Fall! I think the NDP should join the other two opposition parties and pull the plug this Fall, however they will probably cut another deal with the Liberals. Just a hunch.
  14. NDP not ruling out future deal with Liberals Once again we are going to see an NDP-driven government agenda it seems. This is good because Canadians are more in tune with NDP policies than any other political party.
  15. Dear CES Please fix your link to the National Post article Secondly Mayor David Miller was refering to the computer scam ripoff at Toronto City Hall by right wing or Conservative Councillor Tom Jacobek. Cheers
  16. Well, the average Canadian sure doesn't give a crap when the NDP is only concerned with those problems in Toronto. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Dear cybercomaMartin had his caucus mtg in Regina Harper had his caucus mtg in Halifax Layton is having his caucus mtg in Toronto And your point again is. Zilch. Exactly. Another substantive post from a Conservative party member. Cheers
  17. Embattled FEMA director Brown resigns No kidding Brown is otta d'ere. He had become the catalyst, or lightning rod for some of the frustration surrounding Bush's Katrina crisis. I am sure the Republicans will try to hid Brown away from the possibility of additional media attention if they can get away with it. You know, it's the ole sweep it under the carpet trick.
  18. Dear CES You can always tell when the Conservative party members are posting: no party policies of their own they dare discuss, but big on the personal putdowns, and not a shred of any substance to any of the debates Cheers
  19. Let's see now, the working people in Canada don't use the education system, don't use public transit, don't live in subsidized housing, don't have concerns about polution, and the environment, and don't have concerns about the rising gas and oil prices. Uh hum! It's not what I say, it is what Canadians say, which is indicated in the SES poll showing that the NDP are now withing 6% of the official opposition.
  20. Dear CES Says who? You. Cheers
  21. Now the Jewish community is upset with McGuinty. You had to know this was going to happen. Mcguinty has shot himself in the foot over this one although as Tory said it is the right decision. Jewish groups upset with McGuinty
  22. I'm quite surprised there is that much support for Mulroney, mind you it is early in the polling .
  23. NDP caucus lauded by Toronto's mayor With Layton pushing for government policies that appeal to the average working Canadian it's no wonder that the New Democrats are within strinking distance of the official opposition, with only 6% separating them according to the latest SES national polls. The NDP will not be supporting the nationalization of Canada's oil and gas industry, which should appeal to Canadian business leaders as well. All in all it looks the Layton New Democrats are on a roll!
  24. Yea, thanks to Mulroney who brought Bouchard into his cabinet and gave him credibility, the Bloc was formed, and has been with us ever since. Great contribution Mr Mulroney, thanks a lot!
  25. Gomery delay likely to push election back The Bloc and the Tories will probaly push for an election right after the Nov 1. Once again it will up to the NDP to decide or not if we ae going to have an election. I wonder what Layton will be able to fanagle out of Martin this time.
