  1. Fair enough, but i still see no harm in saying "A certain sect of society believe that........" hmm for some reason it didnt quote what BD wrote in response to my intial post. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> An analogy for why ID should not be brought into the realm of science is the recent Katrina hurricane and global warming. Scientists have been saying for years that the water is getting warmer but global warming, at least up until recently, has been disregarded by the current US Administration. It is possible if the scientists had been allowed to do their scientific work unimpeded by the business community, the government would have been more receptive to have provided safer arrangements for the poor people in the gulf region.
  2. And from the 2nd and final member of the WBP, Doug Christie was the first, remember. Here is another tale of woe about this terrible country called Canada. Seriously where does he come up with this dribble? I can see it all now when Dick Cheney recoperates from the Katrina disaster, he will be coming back to Calagary to speak at that bastion of Canadian goodwill, the Fraser Institute, to declare that to bring democracy to them, just like they did for Iraq, the US is going annex, ah Alberta's the one with the oil isn't it, yes, Alberta. Secession of the West: Is it Time? PS I think Jim Dinning is going to do just fine!
  3. BD I agree. Persky, who is philosophy instructor, agrees as well. I think the three of us all agree it is bunk. Persky's point is he'd rather have it discussed in his philosophy class so that he has some control over the process, and it can be debunked there, as opposed to NOT letting it be discussed in the schools, and only in churches, where it will be strictly brainwashing, with no opportunity to challenge it or to debunk it at all. He raises a valid argument.
  4. The question here is should we adopt an affirmative action policy where race can potentially outweigh the attributes required for the position. Is it possible that racial background IS an important attribute which is required of the position? For example, all other things being equal, is a black cop a better cop than a white cop in a black neighborhood because the black cop is more likely to be trusted? If the answer is yes, then it brings up the question of whether we let other people’s biases dictate the best choice of the candidate for a position. For myself, I am very much against affirmative action. People's fit for a role should be judged upon their skills for the job. Racial background should not be one of the attributes considered, and it is abhorrent to me that more qualified candidates would be passed over by less qualified ones just because they don't have the correct racial background. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Dear renegade, Perhaps being in tune with the minority community you are going to serve in is part of the atributes required to become an effective and appropriate police officer, huh! What do you think? Cheers,
  5. Humour is good. BTW anyone been watching the late nite talk shows this week with particularly Jon Stewart? If Arar was an isolated incident perhaps there would be grounds to not believe him but it is beginning to look like might be a whole slew of them. Doesn't look very good, at least at the moment.
  6. Finally, mayor gets transit bucks To all the folks that pay taxes, the GTA public transit riders give you all a big appreciation, for helping to reduce traffic conjestion, polution, and global warming. Thanks boys and girls, and thank you also to the Layton New Democrats who brokered the deal to keep the government afloat last Spring. I feel better already, and so should all of you.
  7. Senate Democrats Pushing for Roberts's Legal Memos Roberts, and perhaps Gonzales - what's the significance of these judicial appointments? Are these the most important appointments of GWB's Presidency?
  8. Saskatchewan Pary, Conservative Party, what's the difference? Many former Tory members and supporters now support the Saskatchewan Party. That's like saying Quebecers weren't voting for separation in the referendum because it didn't say that on the ballot? Everyone here knows they are one and the same party. Do you seriously think that the people in Saskatchewan will elect another party of that political persuasion after the Devine years? How many people in the Devine Conservative cabinet were sent to prison, and weren't they the most corrupt government that Canada has ever had?
  9. Churchill's quote: reminds me a lot of the CBC. Their one-sided political news reporting favouring the Liberals leaves a lot to be desired however overall they are so much better than anything else, although I hear that NPR is quite good as well. I wonder if it is their political reporting which deep down causes the most frustration for voters/listeners. Anyway don't you like hockey, or are you an Anne of Green Gables type of guy?
  10. Perhaps if we didn't have the CBC, Canada would have ended up as part of the US, with the current US administration as our government. Be careful what you ask for!
  11. Yes it's good to see humankind come together to help each other in a crisis like this. As long as Canada don't use those 2nd hand British submarines we should be OK, eh!
  12. I think it's great when people, businesses, pitch in like that.
  13. Yes actually I, and most of the rest of the planet, who had access to TV, saw the Mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, stay and try and save his people, and basically get no assistance from the Bush administration until Nagin shamed them on national TV into cutting their vacations short, and stopping to go to ball games and shopping for $1,000. shoes. Strange you missed that part of the disaster. What's that called again? Oh yea, Selective Memory Syndrome. And concerning the state government bizarre, you missed the following message as well which says Canadians were there helping 5 days before the US Army arrived. I forgot, Secretary of Defence Rumsfiled was in San Diego at a ball game. That explains it. Perhaps you had better go get that Selective Memory Syndrome checked out. Of couse businesses have pitched in, but often unfortunately when you put business people in charge of running government, they get their priorities mixed up, and lose sight of, or actually drop the ball, as what happened with DC and Katrina.
  14. Actually I think you are pettifogging. Check this out: Link Post #15
  15. Somebody likes Canada.
  16. Is the following question acceptable: "Do you want to separate from Canada?" et en francais aussi.
  17. A little bit of America for you:
  18. Dear BD Thanks for your post. I have been more concerned about MLW continually losing decent posters and scaring off potential new ones, than the ones who are presently here, and who know the drill. Cheers,
  19. It certainly doesn't look good to see The Republicans, following one of the plays in Karl Rove's dirty tricks book, attacking and trying to blame the NO Mayor Ray Nagin, while Bush is accusing Democrats of playing the blame gain. Quite the crew!
  20. Do you think what Mahar Arar was subjected to could have been prevented if CSIS properly reflected our multicultural society?
  21. Dear Pocket Rocket, Is It Just Me or....., ...is this place degenerating??? Cheers,
  22. Dear Shakeyhands, My impression, for what it's worth, is that the NO Mayor, Ray Nagin is going to turn out to be one of the heroes in this whole overwhelming tragedy. The reason I say that is if he had not publicly lambasted the federales for not doing anything, or not doing enough, who knows when help would have arrived from DC. Some press are even suggesting they have not seen the Democrats so invigorated since Bill Cinton left the White House. I guess this is out of Karl Rove's dirty tricks book. When Bush is asked about the federal responsibilities out the front door he say that you are playing the blame game, and then at the same time out the back door the Republicans are on this massive blame Louisaina and NO for the tragedy. All orchestrated and quite diabolical really when one thinks about it. Bush may scorn blame game, but he has to play Democrats Step Up Criticism of White House Response Cheers,
  23. A Muslim woman's sharia ordeal I'm not sure what to make of this sharia proposal. Women in other religious groups in Canada have to request permission from their spouses to divorce. We are going ahead with this because of the other religious groups in Canada that also have been given special privileges. Because you can't refuse one religious group and not another. Quite the dilemma I would say.
