  1. Bombardier Aerospace was born out of two poorly ran companies, companies that developed the aircraft Bombardier builds, over 30 years ago.........bizjets and short haulers have been a volatile market long before Bombardier Aerospace was born......what is at issue, the family run Bombardier thought investing and taking onn two failing companies, heavily leveraged in these markets, a good idea.
  2. I largely agree, but far be it for me to defend the Trudeau government, its no different then Harper loaning billions to automakers. Furthermore, as noted by Bonam, aside from subsidiaries, it is one of the few Canadian makers of fixed wing aircraft......a monopoly created by past governments that allowed Bombardier (always a poorly run company) to swallow-up even more poorly ran Canadian aerospace "giants"..........In large part though, the rot can be traced back to the previous Trudeau government, and its then industry minister Jean Chretien, who nationalized the then sinking Canadair in the 70s, and then repeated the same mistake with de Havilland Canada in the 1980s........ Without Canadair and de Havilland, Bombardier would be know as a just a maker of snow machines...... I agree, much like shipbuilding. It doesn't make economic sense, but it is a strategic industry, and the GoC giving out this corporate welfare is no different then what nearly every other aerospace company receives from their parent country..........with that, a far greater impact on the Canadian aerospace industry is our membership in the JSF program. That would be a start, and like the Government of Quebec, the Government of Canada get a percentage of sales.
  3. And that is what it look like this government is going to do......but, the one hope for common sense prevailing is the Trump administration pressuring Canada to pull up her socks.....just as the Western Europeans and Reagan administration did with the last Trudeau in the 70s and early 80s.
  4. And for the numpties that say the F-35 lacks the ability to defend itself from other aircraft: Furthermore: And its not just a force multiplier for other aircraft, but naval and ground forces........with a radar capable of tracking something as small and fast as an artillery shell, giving the f-35 the ability to not only track and attack artillery to the point in which it was fired, but relay targeting information to other allied ground forces.......likewise, in a naval environment, the F-35 is capable of providing targeting data for ships and subs, allowing these platforms to remain "stealth" by not turning on their own search and fire control radars......... Purchasing any legacy aircraft, absent attrition aircraft, today is idiotic, even more so now that the F-35's price has fallen dramatically
  5. Close, the Starfighter not the Voodoo..........as to the Hornet selection, the only reason we went with its two engines vice the F-16s one, was that the earlier versions of the cheaper F-16 did not have a radar capable of guiding Sparrow medium range missiles......which were a requirement for NORAD.
  6. As noted by Army Guy (and General Hood), the numbers of aircraft only became an issue once the Liberals found a solution (after an extensive lobbying effort by Boeing) looking for a problem........ On this subject, the realization that the majority of the information on a planned Super Hornet purchase, by this government, has been leaked to the press should be most discomforting........and very ironic.
  7. Which is why I said: As in when the ballot is finalized.
  8. And from CHANTAL HÉBERT: Also: As I've said earlier, Bernier, Scheer and O'Toole are going to be my top three picks.....Bernier will be my top pick (likewise most of my extended family that are party members, absent my brother that is going O'Toole first). Last year, my wife and I (and my father and mother) all maxed the donation limit on Mad Max, and are holding off until the end of the month to donate again.......for this year, we were thinking of donating ~$500 to each of our top three, but now we're considering $500 to Max and the balance to one of O'Toole and Scheer as a plan "B".
  9. And there isn't really any point to drop out now......its about leverage....for example, say both Alexander and O'Toole have ~4-5% support among the party and they're being courted by both Bernier and O'Leary. Waiting until the March deadline, they both might be trying to get another couple percentage points (translated into ridings) more, well knowing they will never win the leadership, in the hopes of "giving" their endorsement to one of the likely winners that (in the backroom) offers them a plum cabinet spot in exchange.
  10. I know, there's plenty still. As people pull out, they will be encouraged to endorse other candidates. Even now, those in the basement of the race are/will be courted before the ballot in finalized next month.
  11. Said blog post was written several years (2013) before the Gripen E even took its first flight.......likewise, its quick to point to development delays of the F-35.......but not the Gripen E itself: Hello pot......this is kettle. The blog is written by someone with his own agenda (cheerleading?), lacking in any direct knowledge of modern aircraft. There are F-35s in USAF and USMC operational service......the Gripen E, an aircraft a generation behind, has yet to fly. I will no longer respond to posts referencing the blog.
  12. Yes it is true, the life extension for a 2025 ELE started in the Fall of 2014 by the Harper Government, allowing the GoC until ~2020-2021 to select a replacement.......there is zero reason this government couldn't have run a competition inside two years and selected a replacement (and taken the initial aircraft) inside this mandate.
  13. Or made Peter Mackay the leader of the PCs over one of Prentice, Brison and Orchard......the later two became Liberals.
  14. I disagree.......unless someone wins outright (50% +1) in the first round, the follow on rounds are where the wheeling and dealing take place.......
  15. I know, and now they are, despite not being in full production, in Super Hornet's price range.......the F-35 will only get cheaper as the Super Hornet gets more expensive now.
  16. Your "blog" uses dated information and prices associated with the Gripen C/D...not the Gripen E......Norway rejected the Gripen E (NG) nearly a decade ago on cost grounds, both purchase and through life, as more costly then the F-35A. Same story with the Danes and the Super Hornet versus F-35A. There are more F-35As flying today then there are Gripen Es....in several years, still prior to entering full rate production, there will be more F-35s flying then there will ever be built of The Gripen E
  17. Kevin O'Leary doesn't "sell" party memberships, he, like the other candidates link to the CPC generic registration......maybe ~9000 people have visited his website? Or maybe ~9000 people have joined after he entered the race....granted, that could be people joining the party to vote against Kevin O'Leary. Let's assume though that he has got 9000 people to join that intended to support him, that would represent ~10-15% of party members........what regions and ridings are these supporters in? Are they concentrated or spread out? None the less, I will watch tonight's debate and see how O'Leary does
  18. Ivison, another commonsense Scot such as myself, see's it too: And his reason, of which I agree if the Tories are unable to form government in 2019 (as opposed to say put Trudeau in a weakened minority) is this: If its to take two elections to form government, Bernier is the man.......I doubt O'Leary would stick around if he "lost" an election, all the while, the party could tear itself apart. And that is why I'll be voting for Bernier and won't mark my ballot for O'Leary (or Leitch)
  19. I agree (and not because my wife is a orthodontist), likewise eyes and physiotherapy.......all areas important to a persons well being and overall health. Cosmetics aside, basic coverage in these three areas would likely save more money for taxpayers on the backside of peoples lives.
  20. And they can't, its a party wide membership.........they don't even have the ballots finalized.
  21. Quoting cost per flight hours from Wikipedia is inaccurate, as the total is an average obtained through the entire fleet (size).......a USN Super Hornet is "cheaper" per hour then one within the RAAF, likewise, a RCAF Super Hornet would "cost more per hour" then both the USN and RAAF based on use having a smaller fleet. This is one of the actual reasons why the F-35 is getting "cheaper" to operate (and purchase), the fleet size is expanding (likewise economies of scale on production, growing supply chain and more personal trained on the type)
  22. Not a surprise, I've been saying that for years.........the time to have purchased Super Hornets was two decades ago... Again, I've been saying that for years......its all about economies of scale, likewise, the stages of the production cycles. Unlike the F-35, the Super Hornet will also have an added FMS levy of upwards of 15%. Also, with the forthcoming opening up of NAFTA, I wonder what that will do to any industrial offsets with Boeing? The quoted price of the Gripen is decades old and from the first block versions.......the Gripen NG, with an actual radar and avionics suite that we'd require for NORAD, is actually the same price (or more) then the Super Hornet and the full rate production F-35A.
  23. Greg, I fully agree that you're within your right to make moderation/banning actions, its your forum after all, likewise I can understand your point on "vandalizing" the forum through the described actions by Cybercoma. Going forward, now that the rules on such actions are crystal clear, and I assume if they're not already, you will be including them on the conditions of membership for new members? Furthermore, though I don't know him personally, nor do I hardly agree with Cybercoma on any given subject, could it be any "confusion" on the rules on the part of Cybercoma, combined with him maybe going through a personal rough patch (*** I'm not an expert by any stretch, but his "mood" has seemed "off" recently***) perhaps be grounds to warrant a longstanding member one single "Mulligan"? IOW, a suspension with a short leash versus a complete banning? Thanks. (to add, I agree with a "window" for editing posts for spelling etc or fixing a link etc)
  24. And that, of course, is noted in the passage I quoted.....If O'Leary is able to raise over a Million in the next couple of months, and get such a diverse level of support as Bernier, then it will be a much closer race......I know he raised a whack of money during a 24 hour blitz, but what I don't know, is if this will continue and translate into party memberships intent on voting for O'Leary.
