Online Voting in Canada
WestCoastRunner replied to WeVoteCanada's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well, if they do get to this point, let's hope they have a top notch IT team to test the security features and that the system performs up to the highest standards.- 216 replies

Time to Phase Out Whales in Captivity
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Local Politics in Canada
If we could show kids videos of these scenarios, they would be more inclined to get out and explore the world as they get older, instead of heading to the local aquarium where they get the wrong message, that it is ok to keep these mammals in captivity. -
Online Voting in Canada

Well, you have nothing to back up your statement that it would not be easier than showing up at a poll. Once the software is in place with security measures etc. it is doable.- 216 replies

So, you are actually open to the idea, as long as security measures were in place. Those were my exact thoughts as well.- 216 replies

Boeing 777 Disappears Near Vietnam
WestCoastRunner replied to Big Guy's topic in The Rest of the World
As I understand it, the radar system in that part of the world is terribly lacking so anything is plausible but according to Malaysia, they were able to determine through analysis that it did in fact fly around Indonesia, but they have reported incorrect information in the past as well. It will definitely have an impact on passengers flying in and out of Malaysia for quite sometime, I bet. -

Exactly! My 80 year old mother is constantly on her laptop and goes through withdrawals when she gets disconnected. She would certainly vote online if the opportunity was there for her.- 216 replies

Online Voting in Canada

Consider for a moment, that younger people use technology everyday and most of the day. If we could get the younger people to vote online (their comfort zone) what is the harm in that?- 216 replies

Interesting thought but why did they fly around Indonesia? -

How do you know who and what makes up the tiny minority you are alluding to? Online voting is an easy way to make people vote so why not adopt this method. It is wrong to assume that an old person in a wheelchair could not vote online.- 216 replies

Taxpayer Funded Fertilization Treatments
WestCoastRunner replied to Big Guy's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
If anyone were to read the article more closely, there are advantages to this. This treatment would only allow a single embryo transfer which would eliminate the possibility of multiple births. Multiple births are expensive to the health care system and could also result in illnesses like cerebral palsy. A study that was conducted and referenced by the Alberta government suggested Alberta could save $78-million in the next five years if they adopted this very same measure. That’s because multiple births — which according to Statistics Canada increased by 45% between 1991 and 2008 — are also more likely to lead to premature births, underweight babies and higher rates of disability. http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/05/23/report-urges-alberta-to-follow-quebecs-lead-in-adopting-government-funded-in-vitro-fertilization/ -
School stabbings.

BC, you always pull the 'thread drift' when it suits your fancy. You seem to go off topic quite often, just as much as anyone else. But you constantly call people out when you feel you no longer have the upper hand. -

Online Voting in Canada
WestCoastRunner replied to WeVoteCanada's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Oh come on! Pretty narrow minded thinking. It's a great idea and once security measures are in place, I say, finally, it's about time! A number of folks will embrace it; seniors, disabled; and when bad weather hits; just go online and cast your vote.- 216 replies

Boeing 777 Disappears Near Vietnam

I continue to wonder why this plane disappeared and was on no one's radar? Why didn't Malaysia scramble some jets together at the first sign of them going missing? Incompetence? -

And you are ok with that? Would you not like to do something about it? And how would you reduce violence with guns in the U.S.? -
Time to Phase Out Whales in Captivity
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Local Politics in Canada
I agree that we should have rehabilitations for injured or species that are endangered. Once they are bred or rehabilitated, they should be let back into the wild unless they would not survive. We should not keep them penned up, solely for the profits of these zoos and aquariums. -

Why do you disagree? And how do you measure appropriate accommodations? If we continue to accommodate these mammals, animals, birds etc in aquariums and zoos, the unscrupulous methods of capturing them will not stop. -
CBC cuts 650 jobs and wants to advertise now
WestCoastRunner replied to Boges's topic in Media and Broadcasting
The Globe and Mail has a great article titled: "How should we remake the CBC? Cultural minds weigh in." The people interviewed include among others from Robert Lantos, the film producer; Tony Burman, former head of CBC news; George Jamieson, former CBC programmer. Some of the suggestions include: embrace what industrial psychologists call “creative disobedience.” Creative people sometimes have an excess of this. Let them say “shit” now and then, or piss off somebody with a title, or tell a boss to get out of the way. focus it’s prime-time strategy on the creation of popular, distinctively Canadian dramas, comedies, documentaries and reality shows. The private networks cannot do this because their deep prime-time schedules are inevitably dedicated to U.S. shows. The CBC should be out of sports completely. The private networks do sports very well. getting hold of young talent – and ensuring that the main networked news programs are better, more rounded, deeper than anything provided by the commercial sector – is a tactic. why not pull together some programs that can be broadcast through traditional radio waves for Canadians stuck in rush hour traffic? let’s be careful not to replicate what everyone else is doing. A reinvented CBC requires a dramatic narrowing of what its mandate is. It needs to ditch those activities that are secondary to its core mission. As Judy Maddren pointed out: "As the saying goes, “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.” The CBC should be helping to tell all Canadians what we’ve got." -
Is it not appropriate to set politics aside for the passing of someone? Let's have respect for at least one day. Not sure of the appropriate time to show respect but surely it must be more than 12 hours.

Well, let's not get too crazy with our sympathies. We wouldn't want to go overboard.

Corporate Influence On Alberta Education

I am going to abstain from joining a resistance party. I simply want the oil companies to stay out of the educational system.
