Time to Phase Out Whales in Captivity
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Alright then, let's round them up and put them in the zoo! He will be exposed to warm, comfy surroundings and plenty of food at his beck n call. -
Corporate Influence On Alberta Education
WestCoastRunner replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Yes, I am wondering that as well. I am a liberal but I am against the oil companies weighing in on public education. What does that make me? What the heck is a neo liberal? -

That has been my question all along! I am so very curious as to the judges findings. -

I am doing the west coast trail this year. Maybe I will see your boat! -

Socialist: I do have an issue with your stance against the neo-liberals. I am speaking as a parent against the oil companies influencing the educational system in Canada. If you were to lay off on the neo-liberals (whatever the hell that means!), you may find more sympathy and support. BTW, I am liberal but I also support your stance against the oil companies invading the educational system. -

Corporate Influence On Alberta Education

I would like folks to weigh in on why the oil companies would benefit the education system in Alberta or anywhere else for that matter. I haven't heard any good arguments in their favour. -

This doesn't explain why oil companies should be weighing in on the elementary and high school education system and how they could possibly improve on it. I am not a school teacher, but what does that have to do with it. I had kids in the education system. Do you have stats on students who watch movies and videos ad nauseum when the teachers don't feel like teaching? -

And to point out, I am not speaking from any political platform. I am speaking as a parent of children and a grandchild. I do not want any oil company to weigh in on their education at the elementary and even the high school level. I don't care what province in Canada either. -

I don't understand why we need to sacrifice the freedom of wild animals so our kids can learn and see exotic animals. It seems like too high a price for the animals to fulfill our perceived kids needs. -
Corporate Influence On Alberta Education

Instead of attacking the poster and what he does in his spare time, why not stick to the issue. First of all, fingerpainting is taught at the elementary school level. Why on earth do the oil companies feel they need to influence what children at these ages study as part of their curriculum. Typically film making is taught at the college level, not at the elementary level. Social engineering is taught at the college and university level, not at the elementary level. So why are the oil companies trying to influence the elementary school education? -

I too have a problem with the Oil industry weighing in on the education system in Alberta. I can understand when they reach out to community colleges to ensure that students are trained to fill jobs in their industries but to influence the education system for kindergarten to grade 8 students is very scary. The oil industry should not ever run the government or the education system. -

If zoos, circuses and aquariums were eliminated, there were would be no need to address your first two points. The next two points I agree with and we could have habitats for just those reasons and we actually do. Sure, you can go on. -
Hey let's talk about the Leafs
WestCoastRunner replied to Boges's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
With Linden's and Gillis' issues during the lockout, there was no way Linden would come and work with the Canucks in any capacity while Gillis was on board. The organization knew they had to do something drastic to move the team forward and I suppose getting rid of Gillis so Linden could come on board was the answer. -

We shall see who the idiots are in the next few years. A quote from Quinn who has no doubt Linden will succeed: “He has developed a great reputation in this city,” Quinn said. “He’s sharp, he has got all kinds of good tools, and he cares about people and that is the bottom line for me. People trust him. I think those are the ingredients that are going to help him be successful.” http://www.vancouversun.com/mobile/sports/news/Trevor+Linden+advised+surround+himself/9720913/story.html -

How could a wild animal living in their natural environment be worse conditions than living in a zoo. Can you give an example? -

Stroumboulopoulos worked for CNN on the short-lived series "Stroumboulopoulos," which aired last summer but was not renewed. I hear he will be hosting Saturday night hockey on CBC now. -

I recall many years ago, visiting a zoo with my young kids (would never do that again!). They had a bear in a large cage with a pop machine just outside the pen. It was filled with orange crush pop. Visitors could buy a pop and feed it to the bear. It was just horrible. Mind you, I don't expect many zoos would get away with that now but it was simply horrific to see the bear drinking that pop all day long, and of course the bees were just swarming the place. -

And what is reasonable to a jury could be quite different to what is reasonable to a judge and 2 associates. -

I agree with this. There is no need for aquariums and zoos. It's quite upsetting to visit one of these places and watch these animals held captive away from their natural environment. -

In this perfect world, they don't need to be held captive. There is no good reason for it except for the profitability of aquariums. That's very cool! Is that off Vancouver Island? -
An article appeared in the Vancouver Sun today regarding the whales in captivity at the Vancouver Aquarium. The aquarium is planning a $100 million-plus expansion, which will likely include an enlarged whale pool to accommodate more captive belugas, The mayor of Vancouver weighed in on it with this statement and the aquarium was not pleased! “The Vancouver Aquarium is renowned worldwide for its work on conservation and state-of-the-art ocean research, and its team plays a crucial role in educating the public about the importance of protecting our vibrant local waters and marine environment. It is a huge draw for local residents and tourists alike, and one of the highlights of Stanley Park.” But: “My personal view is that the Vancouver Aquarium should begin to phase out the holding of whales and dolphins in captivity.” I say, good on Gregor! It's time to stop capturing these whales solely for the purpose of aquariums profiting from them. http://www.vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/Pete+McMartin+Mayor+Gregor+Robertson+view+free+whales/9721058/story.html
